For a horrible moment Matt thinks a tug-of-war might actually happen, but the elf bows and scurries off. He heaves a sigh of relief.

"So where d'you wanna go instead?"

"Anywhere else?"

Kermit-creatures are creepy.

"Great Hall? Ravenclaw? The grounds? Random classroom? The roof? Back to the Little Green Apple?"

A place like this has way too many possibilities.

"Preferably somewhere inside, and not a bar. A classroom, or back to Ravenclaw?"

Either is fine with him.

"Ravenclaw's probably comfier. I don't think classrooms would have sofas."

As they're talking, the same house-elf pads back up, holding two huge picnic baskets. Heavy ones.

Matt blinks.

So does L, but in the interest of leaving faster, he takes one and makes for the door, glancing over his shoulder to urge Matt to follow.

With a muttered thank-you Matt grabs the second and hurries after L, hoping he's not going to get grabbed again.

"... that was sort of unnerving," he says once they're clear of the door.

"A little. But I think we got more than one cake."

Matt laughs. "Well, yeah. There is that."

The basket is pretty heavy.

"It is this way, yes?"

They've woven around down here a little, but he thinks he knows where they are.

"I should like a map."

"I'm pretty sure."

And if both of them are kind of sure, they must be on the right track! Right?

"A map would be good. I don't think I've ever been in a more confusing place before."

Normally it's okay, but sometimes it's just really fucking annoying.

"I would be alright, I think, except for the stair cases, and that there are some parts of things that bend the laws of physics."

He's pretty certain about that. Or else more disoriented than he thought.

"But I am thinking about what you said earlier."

"What did I say earlier?"

He's just tipsy enough that he can't be bothered thinking through their conversation and working it out for himself.

"That you were happy here. I am glad your day went that well. This morning, I would not have said you struck me as happy."

"Well... yeah, the nightmare thing sucks pretty bad. I've been thinking about those grounding exercises you told me about, though..." And then he smiles. "But I've got friends here, y'know? More than just - it's sort of novel."

Not that he had no social life. Just not the sort where there would be three people who would sit and calm him down at four am on a weekday.

That's because they're all up at four am on a weekday. L, for example, hasn't slept in a very, very long time. Silly person.

"I hope they stop. But if they do not, knock on my door. I will usually be up."

"I usually try to get back to sleep after. Last night was just a bit... But thanks. I will."

"I should have remembered to ask the elves for something you would like to eat."

It slipped his mind.

"I'd meant to."

"I was going to, too, but I thought getting out was more important. I think I've got some chips or something in my room."

"How you can not like sweets is beyond me."

L seldom bothers with anything else.

"I don't mind them. Chocolate gives me headaches, though."

Which worked out pretty well, in all honesty.

L traces his bottom lip with his thumb.

"Yeah," he laughs. "I could eat a bit, but not a full bar. I'd just give mine to Mello, when we were kids."

"A and I are going in to town soon, to get him some."

Mostly just so L can take A out and about.
