Matt's just about had his fill of cake; the slice of torte is over half-gone. Carefully, he places the plate onto the floor.

"Yep. Loads of them."

When he considers the improvement he feels in his social life... well, it must be even bigger for L.

"I think I am happy."

It's a good feeling. It might be the malibu, but he doesn't mind.

"I think I also need to sleep, though."

"Good. To both. I could probably do with some sleep as well..."

Normally he'd sit up and mess about with his computers some more, but. He has been awake since before four. And spent a couple of hours joyriding in London. And, y'know, actually needs sleep.

And L has been awake since yesterday morning.

"Then we should bring the cakes to my room. I will keep them."

"The rest of my one, too? Or d'you wanna leave that?"

He's already shifting to his feet, one hand curling around the handle of the nearest basket.

"I think we can leave it."

It's too bitter for him, really, anyways.

"Right."

It's when he stands up that he realises how buzzed he is.

"Alcohol is a wonderful thing," he tells L.

"I thought it caused brain damage? Has anyone ever told you about the rabbits?"

They're of some concern.

"It makes you feel nice, though. What rabbits?"

"... whoa." He takes a moment to think about this. "How drunk would you have to be to have hallucinations?"

Matt always assumed you would pass out WAY before that stage.

"Please do not try to find out?"

L doesn't think it would go well.

"They should be done by now, yes? If not, I can put silencing charms on their door for them."

"No way, man. That sounds freaky. And I'm good about how much I drink."

(Matt bases this on the fact that he's been drinking regularly since he left Wammy's, and has only ever passed out once. Whoo.)

"... oh yeah." He'd forgotten that's what they're waiting for. "I guess they might be... how long ago did they leave the bar?"

"Um."

L chews on his thumb, a little dazedly, and tries very hard to remember. It's difficult.

Matt isn't sure either.

"... probably long enough? I mean, we went to the kitchens and everything..."

He really doesn't want to speculate on how long Mello and - he stops that train of thought in its tracks.

"The only reasonable option is to make a run for it."

Clearly, this is the thing to do.

Matt nods.

"If they haven't cast a silencing thing, I'm hiding in your room until it's safe."

He lives right across from them.

"You could get head phones too? But that would not help if you wanted to sleep."

L peeks into the hallway, and then sets off for his room, making full use of rather long, stork-like legs to move at impressive speeds, relatively gracefully.

And Matt hurries after him, just behind him - he's not all that fast but they are only running down a single corridor.

He doesn't actually notice whether there are any suspicious sounds going on. He's concentrating on not dropping the picnic basket.

Whee, through L's door before suspicious sounds can be registered or not.

"I might be a bit light headed. Over thirty hours without any sleep, and my general performance begins to suffer. Alcohol is compounding the problem."

Matt shuts the door and puts down his picnic basket.

"I think people are supposed to sleep, like, daily. Or nightly. Our bodies are probably built that way."

He puts his ear to the door.

"I'll go when I think it's safe. If that's okay?"

"I do not think that is the case. If exposure to night and daylight were eliminated, I am not sure what natural sleeping patterns would be."

He just knows he prefers less of it.

"Perhaps we have adapted that way, what with constant exposure to said environment. I play music when sounds outside bother me."

"... I guess that makes sense." He spends enough nights sitting up gaming, after all. "But I dunno, I usually need to catch up pretty bad."

Matt stretches.

"French music?"

"Sometimes."

He nods.

"Edith Piaf. Other things."
