And to celebrate, there was a new special at the Little Green Apple.

"You didn't get a strawberry."

The important part of the cheesecake is the strawberries.

He reaches over and steals a strawberry from L's plate.

"Got one now!"

"Conniving wretch."

L doesn't stab him with his fork.

(It's been known to happen.)

He reaches for his drink, instead.

"Taught by the best," he laughs, biting into the strawberry. He figures he can have another forkful or two before offering the rest of his slice to L.

"You should try a bit of the torte, after. It's not very sweet."

And thus, probably more to Matt's taste.

"This one?" he asks, gesturing to the cake L's set aside. "What's in it?"

"Coffee, cinnamon and walnut."

He offers Matt a knife, to cut a piece.

Well, if he's getting a slice of something else it'd probably be okay to offer L the rest of the cheesecake. Matt takes the knife and, before cutting into the torte, taps his plate. "You want this?"

"Alright."

He will never say no to cheesecake, no matter how tired he's getting.

Matt scrapes it onto L's plate, then takes a bit of the other cake.

... hmm.

"This is alright," he says. It doesn't make his teeth itch, at least.

"There are lots of kinds."

L explored dilligently.

"I will find a charm to keep them cool, and keep them in my room." To feed the psycho-metabolism.

"... d'you think you'll get through all these cakes?"

"It may take some time."

But it's cake.

"But I like to eat while I work."

"Are you still working, while you're here? Or have you been concentrating on magic and all that?"

Matt takes a tentative second forkful of the torte.

"I am working through a third persona. L is inactive, but Daneuve is beginning to become very busy. Nothing of real importance, but enough to keep me from being bored. That, and learning magic."

Just enough to keep his mind moving.

'L is inactive'... man, it sounds weird to hear that. Especially when it occurs to him, every now and then, that this is L, the L they'd looked up to as little kids, crouched on a sofa a tiny bit drunk and eating cake with him.

Life is weird. Matt decides he likes it.

"Being bored sucks. Are you liking it here, though?"

"It goes up and down."

He shrugs, and sips his malibu-lemonade drink.

"But mostly, I think so."

"Good," Matt says, firmly, though he's a little dismayed that L gets downs. He's juuust drunk enough that he thinks everyone ought to be feeling as good as he does.

"If you ever need to vent, y'know? I'm about."

"I will keep that in mind."

He grins, and takes another sip of his drink.

"Awesome."

He stretches, leaning against the back of the sofa.

"We should play video games sometime."

"I do not know if I am any good at that."

But he wouldn't mind trying.

"Aw, man. It's too bad," Matt says, trying to keep a straight face, "that you don't pick things up quickly or anything. We'll just need to scrap the idea."

"Maybe I could try," he concedes, with a short laugh, "but what sorts of games?"

He looks sort of pleased at making L laugh, and takes another drink. "Dunno. Whatever you like. Tekken or something. Or Soul Calibur, or the Warriors..."

Something button-bashy, he's thinking.

L has no idea what any of those are.

"Alright."
