That's because they're all up at four am on a weekday. L, for example, hasn't slept in a very, very long time. Silly person.

"I hope they stop. But if they do not, knock on my door. I will usually be up."

"I usually try to get back to sleep after. Last night was just a bit... But thanks. I will."

"I should have remembered to ask the elves for something you would like to eat."

It slipped his mind.

"I'd meant to."

"I was going to, too, but I thought getting out was more important. I think I've got some chips or something in my room."

"How you can not like sweets is beyond me."

L seldom bothers with anything else.

"I don't mind them. Chocolate gives me headaches, though."

Which worked out pretty well, in all honesty.

L traces his bottom lip with his thumb.

"Yeah," he laughs. "I could eat a bit, but not a full bar. I'd just give mine to Mello, when we were kids."

"A and I are going in to town soon, to get him some."

Mostly just so L can take A out and about.

"Is there a chocolate shop?"

"Probably not the nearest town. Somewhere not too densely populated, but where there will be good chocolate. I will find some somewhere."

The internet is marvelous, after all.

"Ah, okay. If there was one in Hogsmeade I might have went and had a look."

Obviously not for himself.

"How's A doing, anyway? I spoke to him for a bit, just after he got Schrodinger."

"He's alright."

L is rather proud of him.

"Some moments are more lucid than others. He cursed Mello. Twice. For speaking to me rudely."

Matt stares at L for a moment, then bursts into a laugh.

"Oh, man. He did not tell me about that. He must have been... what kind of curse?"

It's sort of lucky that Matt's been reading up, and knows most curses are fairly harmless in and of themselves. Otherwise he might be a bit more affronted.

"Petrificus totalus. Mello called him my monkey, and A lost his patience."

He has to muffle a laugh with his hand.

"He is getting a backbone."

L's attempt at hiding the laugh makes Matt grin. "And with Mello, too. That's pretty good. He intimidated a shinigami into doing what he wanted for a while."

Apparently. Matt can totally see it, though.

"A has... well, not survived, precisely, but has seen some very frightening things. I would not be surprised if, with time, he grew to be rather formidable. Still very hurt, but with the right motivation."

And L's dignity was apparently that motivation.

"... he died, huh?"

Matt shifts the basket into his other hand. They're almost at Ravenclaw.

"I'm glad things are doing well for him, then. He was really freaked out when I first met him."

"Killed himself."

He shrugs, lightly, and peeks inside the picnic hamper.

"I do not think he expected to wake up. Pursuing conversations with him would be most helpful; any sort of socialization would be."

"Fuck. Poor kid." (A is at least two years younger than Matt, possibly three, so he's allowed to say that.) "If I see him about I'll make sure to say hi?"

Up a few steps, and there they are. Matt holds the door open for L, nodding him in.

"Kid."

It's strange, to think of it that way. The idea of them being children is somehow alien.

"Now we need a couch to claim as our own."

"Well, he's younger than us. And he seems sort of... childlike, sometimes?"

There's one - not as close to the fire as Matt would like, but it's red and squishy looking and has plenty of room for both of them and their baskets. He nods to it. "That one looks good. Should I get us more drinks?"

Ravenclaw has a bar as well, after all.

"Yes, please."

L takes the picnic basket from him, and moves towards in order to find them some cake. It is best to thoroughly investigate the contents of both baskets, after all.

"You choose what."

"Right." He grins at L then wanders over to the bar, trying to think of something sweet enough for him. He eventually settles on a Malibu and lemonade, which is too sweet for Matt, at least, and pours himself a Southern Comfort with coke.

"So what've we got?" he asks, wandering back over.

"A little of everything. You might like this."

He's setting aside the torte lesia for later, but first picking up the cheesecake.

"But you have to try this first."
