Divinations Lesson

((OOC: This kinda serves as a hiatus notice, too. I'll be moving and don't know how much brain power or time I'll have to reply. My brain has been pretty shot and I've been bad about returning tags [I am sorry]. So, Akabane, Yukimura, Kusuriyuri, Nero Wolfe, Jing, Mello, Maddie, L, Shito, Gwendal, and Ukon and Sakon will be back in a week or two. If I have time or brain, I'll reply to questions. I seriously cheated in this lesson. It's Kusu's first three lessons Form, Truth, and Regret. I figure there are enough 'new' students that they could find it interesting. Research links are in the original lessons if you're interested in more as there is a lot of information. As class was unannounced, anyone may join. As there is a ton of talking, actions will be in italics, spoken words in plain font.))

Cultural references )

Kusuriyuri set up a room with paper and quills for those who may wander in. Even if one showed up, he would find the sudden impulse to hold class worth the time. He was restless with other things going on and framing a lesson was an impulse that he just followed through with without announcing it. The study, the returning to the basics, was mostly to help calm and focus his mind again.

He leaves the door open for those who may wish to join are welcome to wander in.

The Three Truths )

Kusuriyuri pauses to look over those who've gathered. If you will, please, write and discuss your interpretations of Form, Truth, and Regret, he instructs. He watches to see if there will be questions.

((OOC: I may be slow about replying, but if you need Kusu's attention, put it in the subject. Also, A-mun said that A would be available for questions, too and may reply to requests for Kusu if I can't. Have fun, discuss, don't worry about actually writing an essay, I really don't expect you to. You can always meta it if your character would.))

Divinations Lesson: I Ching

((OOC: As stated before, you don't really have to sign up to participate, nor do you have to have been involved in prior classes. If the hexagrams or trigrams do not show up for you, I am sorry, but I'm not sure which coding needs to be enabled to allow that [for me, I can see both fine at home, but at work I can't see the hexagrams, but then, I also use different operating systems and my home system is set up so I can switch languages]. One of the pages I'm linking to has pictures of the hexagrams, so don't worry too much if you see weird symbols that apparently have nothing to do with the lesson [question marks, boxes with weird things in them, however your browser/system renders them]. So, yeah, basically weird encoding warning ;) )).

Kusuriyuri knelt before the class, watching as the students filed in. On each table was a small bag containing three round coins with square holes in them as well as a blank handout. At the end of the lesson, it would show the meanings of the sixty-four hexagrams made from the eight trigrams written on the board. He watched the students as they alternately toyed with the coins and paper or simply sat, waiting.

Class Sign Up

((As always, signing up and/or prior participation is not required. And, sorry for the delay, but the thought of going over 60 things was intimidating, but I see it's really only 8 and how they go together now...starting is the hard part...I hope.))

Around the school, the following signs appear:

Presented will be a study of trigrams and their combinations. Please sign below if you are interested in attending. Class will be given on the 22 of February. Thank you.

Muggle Studies (Part 2!) - War Games

((Jasper, Valentine, and Hook mentions were approved by their players. =) ))

It was time for Part 2 of Baron Vladimir Harkonnen's class on Muggle Warfare. Perhaps slightly overdue, as snow had settled over the grounds, but, he hadn't been willing to hold the event while the infant-sun monstrosity still lingered in the sky. But now, it was gone, and in the Baron's opinion, the overcast weather was no worse than a 'pleasant' summer day on Lankiveil. He'd learned a few tricks to at least enchant garments for warmth, that would make sure that he and his guest were comfortable in the spectator stands. And, snow was a nice backdrop for the inevitable blood. He gave his assistant Jasper the class off, as, he didn't want to tempt his rather interesting reactions to blood- the last incident had made the vampire so very upset. He did ask him to stay in the proper classroom, and wait for the students who inevitably would show up in the wrong place, to direct them to the Quidditch field.

Sign-up for Muggle Studies

As a followup to his previous class on Muggle Warfare, the Baron Vladimir Harkonnen intended to hold a small 'war game' as a followup. And, the time had come for this happen. So, he had several large, obvious notices posted up around the school.

On Saturday, December 12th, Part 2 of the Muggle Studies class on Muggle Warfare will be held. It is recommended, but not required, to have attended part 1. This class will not be held in the classroom. Instead, it will be held at the school's Quidditch field, at 3 o'clock in the afternoon. Dress warmly, and remember- this class will involve live ammunition! This is an attempt to familiarize the students with the realities of Muggle Warfare. Medical staff will be on hand in case of injuries, and, the school and Muggle Studies department hold no responsibility for any that may occur. If you plan to attend, please sign up on this list, which shall be used to determine the teams for the war game.

Some small print near the end of the signup sheet indicates that by signing up, the student releases the school and its faculty of any and all liability regarding any potential injury, damage, or death that might occur. Although death was impossible at Hogwarts, Vladimir figured that it was wise to cover the possibility.

Muggle Studies

((Jasper's inclusion with permission and additions of his player. If you require Vlad's attention, please say something to this extent in the comment subject line so I don't somehow miss it, thanks!))

The Baron Vladimir Harkonnen wanted his first class to be practical and entertaining, so he had chosen "An Introduction to Muggle Weaponry" as the topic. In order to make the class interesting, he'd decided it would be a hands-on experience, and had negotiated with Basher Tarr to obtain an assortment of Muggle weapons, mainly a quantity of AK-47 assault rifles, along with plenty of ammunition. These had been marked with stenciled letters declaring them "Property of the Muggle Studies Department", and were now stacked up neatly on a table at the front of the room, near some crates bearing the same lettering, and a rocket launcher. A section of the room had been magically expanded, and turned into an indoor firing range, complete with human-shaped targets, and the usual classroom area was equipped with rows of neatly-lined desks.

The Baron remained in a large, comfortable chair at the front of the classroom, his assistant Jasper beside him, and chatted quietly with him about a few details of the lesson plan as he waited for the last students to arrive and seat themselves at the desks. When it seemed that no more were going to appear, he floated up and shut the door with a flick of his wand. The deep, melodic basso of his voice carried easily over the chatter.

"Welcome to Muggle Studies. The subject we'll be covering today is potentially dangerous, so pay attention!"Read more... )

The first portion of a two-part Muggle Studies class will be held on Saturday the 24th of October. The subject will be An Introduction to Modern Muggle Weaponry, and as such, it may be somewhat dangerous. If you have problems with loud noises or strange moral issues regarding warfare, it is advised that you do not attend. This will be a practical class, and as such, will be hands-on experience. Arrive on time, and prepared to pay attention. In order to assure that I will have enough equipment prepared for everyone, sign up on this roster if you plan to attend. Sign up for Part 2 will be separate, and at a later date.

Baron Vladimir Harkonnen (Professor)

((Part 1 of the class isn't the war game- that'll be Part 2. Just a clarification as this was asked in chat, but I was afk at the time.))

Potions class

Valentine waited until what he'd judged was the last straggler to make their way in and shut the door. The dungeon classroom was, for the moment, brightly lit and students were paired up in front of cauldrons. There were a number of beanbags shoved off against one wall. "Why, hello," he said, waiting for whatever chatter was in the air to die down. "And welcome to today's potion class. )

Potions class will be held on Monday, September the 14th in the dungeons. Please sign up below if you want to attend.

This class will have two portions: the first will be to brew a traditional magical potion, the second will be measure its effects in conjunction with a non-traditional concoction.

For this class, no observers will be allowed. As a disclaimer, the lesson will feature two substances that affect the mind; if you are in doubt of your mental state, this may not be the class for you.

((It's safe to say that if you know Valentine, you can guess what kind of things the "non-traditional concoction" might be. If you don't know Valentine... go back through his tag. It's kind of like that.))

Ancient Runes class: your get-out-of-jail-free card

The Ancient Runes classroom: no frills, no fancy equipment. It contained rows of desks, a lectern, a chalkboard upon which angular letters had been drawn.

For the present occasion, it also contained a properly berobed Mr. Wednesday. He had stuck a sign on the door reading "Ancient Runes class in session", the date, and the time. This room had long stood in disuse, and Wednesday well knew what uses the students found for Hogwarts' surfeit of empty classrooms — not that he cared as a general rule, but his class session should not be interrupted by trysting youths, karate kids, or Michael Scott.

class announcement: runes to be held 12 August (yes, that's this Wednesday)

The following flier appears in the usual spots around campus:

Ancient Runes Class.
To be held on the 12th of August.

The Ancient Runes classroom is located on the sixth floor.

Review the Elder Futhark, Younger Futhark, and (Anglo-Frisian) Futhorc prior to the class meeting. New students may read about these in Runes: Reading the Past, held on course reserve in the Hogwarts library.

Advanced students may entertain themselves with the unintentional drolleries of Ralph H. Blum's Little Book of Runic Wisdom, also held on course reserve in the Hogwarts library.

No sign-up or prior commitment is necessary.

- Mr. Wednesday
Professor of Ancient Runes

((OOCly no one expects you to know the runic alphabets. The instruction to review the runic alphabets is purely IC, and the links to the books are for entertainment purposes :) Classes in HH are primarily meant as RP opportunities, not work for the muns. If you're curious and want to have a look at the runes, wikipedia has charts. ))

Divinations Class

((OOC: This lesson is a continuation of the prior, though it is not required that your pup have participated in the prior. Everything needed will be explained and there is an optional activity that can be done if your pup went to the prior class and if you want to/remember what you did there))

Kusuriyuri knelt before the classroom, waiting for all to be gathered. On each desk was a stack of 22 cards, face down. When turned over, they would reveal the Major Arcana in an art style that suited their user. Kusuriyuri rose when the class was well assembled.

Shikigami, what Westerners refer to as tarot cards, are arranged into two major division. The first consists of twenty-two cards, each of a different type, that is called the Major Arcana, or the large secrets. The second consists of fifty-six cards divided into four groups called the Minor Arcana, or small secrets. What ‘small’ and ‘large’ refer to are trends. The large secrets are the over arcing trends while the small secrets refine the knowledge of these large secrets.

Today, we will discuss the Major Arcana and practice with those to become familiar with them.

Class sign-up, in a way

Posted outside the Great Hall is a sign-up sheet. It is impossible to ward responses for anonymity, due to the runic magic with which this sheet is imbued. There is only the one sheet; it is posted nowhere else on campus. Mr. Wednesday figures that if you're too much a hermit to go eat in the Great Hall, you're too much a hermit to be interested in attending class; sucks to be you, thinks Wednesday.

Attention, students:

The Department of Ancient Runes is considering a class to be held soon. The instructor thinks it best first to gauge interest and availability among the student body. If you would be interested in taking a class in Ancient Runes, sign your name here and indicate which day or days of the coming week you would or would not be available.

In case these instructions prove too confusing for you, here is a hypothetical example.

Name: Hogwarts Joe
House: Sparklypoo
Availability: Open to take class any day this week except Saturday.

Note that in this example, Hogwarts Joe does not explain the reason for his unavailability on Saturday. The student body does not need to know that Saturdays are the meetings for his Tadpole Fetish Club, or that afterward the whole gang goes out to the Hog's Head for mai tais.

Thank you for using the sense you were born with.

Sincerely,
Mr. Wednesday
Professor of Ancient Runes

COMC Part 2 of 2

((Open to all, even those who didn't sign up. I couldn't think of a partner activity, so feel free to team up or talk to whomever you want for the "assignment." And, credit where credit is due, the information comes from Principles of Animal Behavior, Lee Alan Dugman, 2004.))

After waiting long enough for everyone who was going to show up to arrive, Grant started his lecture.

((Come mingle by the barn, and look at the animals. The lecture will be in another post.))

The sun was shining at Hogwarts, which was a terrific reason to have class outside. Grant had arranged the unique habitats on the grass outside of the COMC barn. Some hay bales had been dragged out from the barn, in case students wanted to sit down for a while.

The bales of hay were arranged around two glass habitats filled with dirt. The glass exposed the tunnel system of the burrowing animals to the students. In the warrens were pale rodents with long teeth, but what stood out wasn't anything unique about the animals, but what they were wearing.

These were, in fact, the mythical clothed mole rat.

The animals had taken the tall grass that was growing in the dirt and woven little outfits together. There were grass shirts and shorts, along with the requisite grass skirt. How they did this with their tiny little eyes was a subject of much debate.

Grant was doing some last-minute work in the barn while waiting for students to show up. Anyone who came early would get a chance to marvel at the detailed patters the moles had woven.

Divination Class

Kusuriyuri knelt in the front of the classroom, waiting for the class to be well assembled. There was paper on each desk and quills waiting. As the students arrived, he watched them, as curious about his students as he had been the first time he’d taught. It still fascinated him to watch them interact and to see what they took from his lesson. When the class was assembled, he rose and began speaking.

Herbology class part one - Virgin's Teeth

Outside greenhouse six there was a sign:

DETECTION AND DEFENSE AGAINST DANGEROUS MAGICAL PLANTS

Students enter at own risk. Non-participants please stay near the exits and behind the red line.

True to the sign, there was a red line drawn in chalk segmenting two thirds of the greenhouse. The third behind the line was closest to the door, and clear of obstacles.

The space beyond the line, however, was a different story. )
