So Shall You Reap.
The above link leads to a short fic based on what Rowena-mun, Helga-mun and Godric-mun and I decided about what the Founders backstory is. Basically, they were all nobles, knew each other as children, and Helga was supposed to have an arranged marriage to someone she didn't like, so instead appealed to Rowena for help. Rowena suggested founding a school, Godric agreed due to his intense idealism and Salazar agreed so that he could keep teaching the old ways. They pooled their resources, purchased the land, and then built the castle. Helga took care of admin, Rowena of architecture, Salazar of finance and Godric of defenses. They accepted their own students as they saw fit, from a list drawn up of everyone that wanted entrance, but tension gradually seeped in at how Salazar only wanted purebloods and halfbloods and refused to consider others.
Finally, Godric started to actively demand that Salazar admit a particularly gifted Muggle-born, and Salazar refused. The final straw was when Salzar and Godric were arguing over that for the umpteenth time, then Rowena took Godric's side. Salazar got fed up and walked out, feeling betrayed thanks to his feelings for Rowena, and Helga, who had been trying to make peace, went after him. Salazar was aware of Rowena's flirtation with Godric, and therefore sniped something very bitter about how if Lady Rowena prefers Godric's suit to his, she should at least have the decency to not let it affect her professional decision. Helga ticked him off for insinuating such a thing, and feeling as if he couldn't trust any of the other three Founders, Salazar promptly left the school and returned to his estates, where he spent the rest of his life creating new spells.
