"Slacker," I sigh. ""Wards? I thought those worked against like ghosts and shit."

"It was a nice beach. And L really wanted to." Matt shrugs. "But Kusu said you can get these wards to work for specific things or people? So it seems worth a shot."

"Not my thing, either of them, really. But, tell me how the ward thing goes. And, if you want, you can tell me how the L thing goes, but be warned," I hold my finger out, "I will tell you about the Near thing, too."

"... I think I can deal with being told about the Near thing," Matt admits. He fixes the goggles back on, but keeps them on his forehead for now.

I smile. "He's gotten good at dealing with me. He hasn't seen that," I gesture to the floor, "but, I think I could trust him for it." I look off to the side, thinking. "There's only the two of you I'd trust for that."

I shake my head. "He makes me say shit I didn't intend," I complain.

"That's good. I'm glad things... y'know, haven't blown up or anything."

It wasn't just jealousy. Matt was genuinely worried.

"I...I love him despite myself. And, he loves me. I...I would almost say he loved me before we came here, only he didn't know it." I smile at him. "I'm lucky, aren't I, to have the both of you?"

That doesn't necessarily mean things were going to go well, Matt wants to say, but he doesn't.

He smiles back. "Dunno, man. A slacker geek and an agoraphobic albino? Probably could've done better."

I grin a little. "Well, look what you got...a pissy club kid too smart for his own good. I'm not sure which of us has the worst end of that stick."

"And a sugar-junkie," Matt agrees. "Eh. We seem to be doing okay with what we got, at least."

I smile. "Normal would be utterly dull, wouldn't it? Besides, I don't think normal would put up with half our neuroses. They'd try to make you lose the goggles, me to dress human or not have my chocolate, Near to be social and L to eat food that wasn't sugar infested. We'd revolt within an hour."

More snickering. "And that's only skimming the surface. Interacting with normal people... it can be kinda tricky, sometimes, can't it?"

And this coming from Matt, arguably the most normal of them all.

I laugh. "Normal is...dear god, if the Mafia was normal, I do not want to deal with it again. Hairbrained idiots, I swear. And, the wastes of time! Dude, seriously, they made Katamari look difficult. And, some of them liked this god awful television show that was aimed at little kids and just...horrid...it would have been beneath us all when we arrived at Wammy's."

"I still have weed from that Rob guy."

"I'll take a hit or two off you if you pack a bowl," I say, sitting up. "I forgot about that. Did he show you his children or did you manage to get away before he dragged you into his garden?"

"Right now? I'm up for it if you are."

He laughs. "Yeah, we got out of there, just. L had a strawberry plant with him, so he ended up getting spritzed in the face."

"That was smart, taking in a plant. At least he stopped putting LSD in the water he used for the weed after a bad trip. Anyways, yeah, I could use a hit or two. Help me relax a little more. Yo, too. But, tomorrow, we need to at least work on silent charms, okay?"

Matt starts rummaging through drawers, and soon enough comes back to sit on the bed with a small pipe.

"You first. So how'd you get to know Rob, anyway? Weapons, drugs...?"

"You wouldn't believe it," I reply, taking the pipe from him. After making sure the screen is clean, I pack it with some of the weed, knowing Rob is ridiculously anal about cleaning it. I hold out my hand for Matt's lighter when I'm done. "Foreign films. As I said, Mafia kinda low on the intelligence scale. He liked art films and we could talk about things that didn't make my brain hurt from stupidity."

"Foreign films? Seriously?" He hands over the lighter, laughing. "Totally would not have expected that."

"When you're surrounded by morons, you take what you can get," I say seriously before flicking his lighter and taking a hit off the pipe.

"Shit, still good." I hand Matt the pipe and flop back against the pillows before breathing out completely.

"I was always fucking terrified of those guys," Matt admits. "I remember realising it one time, when we were about seventeen."

He takes a hit himself.

"... wow, that is good. Jesus."

I hold out my hand for the pipe. "He's really particular, but I think you might have seen that when you were there. But, he grows some very good weed. I wouldn't trust anyone else's."

"Heh. My standards aren't as strict. But dude, this is..." He trails off, passing the pipe to Mello.

"We should totally try and get L and Near to have some."

I take a hit before answering. "That might be interesting. Pot's pretty easy, just makes you mellow, so I don't think they'd object. It's no worse than alcohol and they've both had that."
