Fuck. Jimmy. He didn't want to think about it right now, didn't want that sort of crap in his mind. Flying would help. Flying would always help.

He thought briefly about owling Devi, or Adam, or Teatime, and asking them along, but figured if anyone was meant to show up they would.

Calmly, he kicked off, slowly spiralling up over the Quidditch pitch.

You're a dancer, but you're dancing on air....

Alone in her dorm room, River looked out the window to see the gangly frame on the broomstick rising over the Quidditch pitch. No one else flew like that.

She couldn't say that she precisely liked Nny. Certainly not when he was radiating anger as if he were a Reaver. But when he was in the air, there was a calm to him that reminded her of Simon when he was doing surgery, or Inara all the time (unless she was with the captain). It was... comfortable. One of the more comfortable feelings she'd had from anyone since Dr. Matthias had---

No. Don't think about that.

Better to think about flying. Flying which was like dancing, only even better; she wondered if she could learn to use that Leviosa spell when she danced, hanging in the air for hours---

But she could fly now. Fly with Nny, who was comfortable when he was flying. And so made her comfortable--- then, anyway.

She got her broom from under the bed and went to the window, pushed it open just enough to climb out with the broom in tow, and---

Pushed into the air, with a dancer's grace, feeling the sudden rush, the freedom she got when she was spacewalking, just for a moment before the varying forces of physics balanced (the equations flashed through her mind automatically) and she was once again reminded that she was earthbound---

Except that, for now, she wasn't--- not completely.

And Nny was up there. Being comfortable.

She leaned over her broom and launched herself toward the pitch.

River waved back, reflecting him--- that sense that wasn't quite sound and wasn't quite touch but was almost like taste except that she did it with her whole body.

He didn't mind her here. He---

What?

She thought she might remember what that was, but it had been so long since she'd felt it from anyone... except:

The captain, after they'd gotten rid of Jubal Early.

The captain again, when they'd left Mr. Universe's planet and the rain had been falling and he talked to her about... flying.

It was almost too much to parse while she was flying, and so she didn't try. She just swooped closer, making a secant through one of his lazy circles.

"Do you ever dance?" She hadn't realized she was going to ask until she already had.

arc of a knife, slice and stab---

--- axe whirling, blood, and she couldn't reflect, it was like a switch was thrown and then she was flowing, because that was what else Rivers did, when they flowed they didn't reflect---

"Yes, you have, silly." She was laughing, and part of her knew she shouldn't be, Simon would... Simon would....

Wouldn't understand.

But she was starting to think that... maybe... Nny did.

"Not that kind of dancing." She swung the broom around in lazy loops. "The kind you were thinking about."

River laughed, her head thrown back, feeling the wind in her face and the laughter tearing its way out from inside like something that had been locked inside for a long time. Because it was funny... and because she had reflected him and he hadn't minded.

When she recovered, she looked at him. "I guess you're right." A little sigh. "I guess it's just that it feels so much like it used to when I danced...."

She looked sideways at him. "Did you ever dance with anybody for fun?" No, that wasn't right. She blinked. "I mean, not to kill them. Just to... practice. Like flying."

River laughed and followed him, hard on his heels.

When they came to a stop she looked at him. "I've never danced with anyone for fun either--- I mean, not that kind of dancing." She half-smiled. "Pas de morte?

...that's why I asked."
From: [identity profile] r-tam.livejournal.com
"It's not really French. Pas de deux is a balletic term for 'step of two' or 'dance for two persons'. So pas de morte---" she grinned at him--- "'dance of death'". A little shrug. "It's silly."

And strange, how easy it was, when she was just... talking... like this, talking about something she knew--- or flying--- or... dancing---

To feel almost normal again.

Or at least... as normal as she'd ever been.

She checked him, with eyes and mind---

... no, he wasn't being ironic.

She smiled a little, remembering---

---"Jayne is a girl's name," she'd said.---

"Quidditch is a performing art," she baited him, and swung hard into the air at a tight angle, banking hard.

River laughed with him. "I should have... seen that." Somehow, it wasn't embarrassing when Nny laughed at her.

She was so caught up in her reverie that she almost missed the second part. "Jimmy." Remembering the way he'd felt in her mind. Nothing clean. Nothing... comfortable. "As long as it's finished, it doesn't matter." She looked at him with hooded eyes.

With almost anyone else, she'd have said, "If you don't finish it, I will," but she knew that with Nny--- and, for that matter, the assassin called Teatime--- she didn't have to.

River looked at him and nodded slightly. It shouldn't have felt so right... but she knew, if she'd gotten to Matthias first, it would not have been quick. Certainly not as quick as it had been for... she never could remember his name. "I don't blame you."

River heard him--- not with her ears; he was reflecting hard, and it hurt, but she caught a breath and threw herself into the flying--- it was just like dancing, you threw the switch and then---

"Good for you." And before she could think, "Does Devi know?"

((OCC: If there are any relevant details about River's time at Hogwarts that I have botched, I'll be glad to re-comment with corrections.

Though my inclination on the window, if it happens to be in the wrong place? Rocks fall. Everyone dies. I mean, it's Hogwarts, things move relative to each other, and so maybe Nny was right and the castle decided she should be able to see him flying...?

Um, yeah. Whatever. ;) ))

Hey, Johnny! This is a good idea. We haven't even had a quidditch practice yet, and my flying sucks. Mind if I practice with you?

River felt Sara coming, but didn't turn.

She didn't mind, as long as Nny didn't start feeling like a Reaver again, but Sara hadn't asked her and it would be rude to answer for him.
