Fuck. Jimmy. He didn't want to think about it right now, didn't want that sort of crap in his mind. Flying would help. Flying would always help.

He thought briefly about owling Devi, or Adam, or Teatime, and asking them along, but figured if anyone was meant to show up they would.

Calmly, he kicked off, slowly spiralling up over the Quidditch pitch.

River shivered violently, trying to get control of herself. She hadn't expected him to be unsettled by tears... or anything else, unless it made him angry.

She got to her feet again, balancing on the broom handle, and experimented with sending it forward while balancing: it was calming to focus down like this, just on something physical....

She'd managed to get the broom to turn while she did an arabesque before she could speak. "When I was at the Academy," she said slowly, trying to make every word count, wanting it to make sense to him, "they told me I had to be broken. For 'the greater good'. They were 'doing such good work,'" she mocked viciously. "I'd... dance with anyone who said that to me again. I mean the kind of dancing you and I do." She stared at him, leaning toward him, still en pointe. "It makes me sad to think you'd be friends with someone who says that to you, just because he likes you." She laughed bitterly. "Dr. Matthias liked me. I was his 'star pupil'. I wouldn't be his friend if he were here." That was the least of it, for gorram certain.

((OOC: OMG!!!! Now I want to apply as Matthias!!! AAAAIGH!!!! Talk me out of it!!!!! Not least because it'd probably end up all sockpuppety with River and him interacting!!! Ooooh... the temptation....))

River thought about that. It felt better than she'd thought. "Okay. Okay.... Why do so many of us get stuck being... not what we want to be?"

She giggled. "He compared you to Ghandi? There was enough history of Earth-that-was available on Osiris that she knew just how funny that was.

((If you of all people are telling me not to take a character, then I will definitely listen! *grin* And two characters are probably about the most I can do justice to right now anyway--- especially cool ones. ;) Hence my excitement about Matthias--- be sorta like playing Mmy, but with better grammar and spelling. *snicker*))

“Oh. That. Right.” River remembered that night--- who wouldn’t? “That’s like Simon, sometimes--- I mean, there were times when there was no one but him who could have calmed me down.” She paused, not dancing now, sitting on the broom and concentrating on this. “But Simon did everything he could to help me, when I was broken--- even some things he ‘shouldn’t’ have done.” She giggled. “He helped the crew rob a hospital for me, once. So that he could use the hospital’s diagnostic suite, to find out what they did to me.” She sobered again. “That’s something that scares me about this school. So many of us are so powerful, and some of them won’t use it even though they know something’s wrong, and some of them just use it to make things worse, and some of us want to help but we don’t know how, it’s not like it was on Miranda when the captain knew what to do---“ She broke off, remembering a bit of poetry from her school days--- her real school days, before the Academy. “‘The best lack all conviction, while the worst are full of passionate intensity.’” She smiled slightly. “Yeats.”

She considered. “Teatime is... sometimes, I think that’s what Matthias wanted me to become. Someone like him. And I wouldn’t have compared you to Ghandi either.” A fey little smile. “You’re one of a kind.”

"I've noticed."

She could hear Devi's voice in his thoughts. "Or not," she said quietly, and came into lotus, sitting sideways on her broom. "We really should figure out a strategy," she said thoughtfully. "For learning Occlumency, I mean. If you're that worried about Devi." And yourself.

"There's always that chance. Simon had to take it when he was trying to put me back together." She unfolded from lotus and drew her knees to her chin. "I suppose you just have to define your range of values for 'worse'." She looked over at him, moving just her head. "It was worse, being what I was, being broken, than anything Simon could have done... because at least he was trying to fix it." She shrugged then, looking away. "Why don't you ask her?" she suggested, as if she were asking his opinion on ice cream flavors... or something decidedly less important.

"That makes sense. Insult to injury." She cocked her head slightly. "But then, if you were the one who broke her in the first place, doesn't it make sense for you to try to fix her?

"Or, if you'd rather, I could look into it. The Occlumency thing. But I don't know Devi." She looked over at him. "You'd have to be the one to tell her."

"Good. And I don't know either.

"Didn't the professors have to submit credentials? To teach here?"
From: [identity profile] r-tam.livejournal.com
"I don't know. Some of them might like it. Professor Lupin has a beast inside him, too. He might understand---"

She smacked her forehead. "Of course!"

*giggles* "We could ask him. About Occlumency. I would--- I will. When he gets back. Unless you don't want me to."

"It's the full moon now. He goes away sometimes when that happens. I'll ask him when he gets back."

She smiled shyly at Nny. "Thank you." And floated up into a pirouette that ended in an arabesque. Because suddenly she felt like dancing.

"You thought it was a good idea." Her voice was little more than a breath. "That's a compliment, isn't it?"
