"Could you get Koopa?"

That'd probably be a good step in the direction of coherency.

"Koopa! Come on, boy, there's more fun things to play with than A's face." Matt crouches next to A, putting his hands on the puppy's sides to turn him around.

When Koopa sees that there's another friend to play with, he barks again, and launches himself at Matt instead. Matt laughs and lets himself fall backwards.

A sits up, wiping puppy spit off his face, and laughs as well when he sees that Matt's now under 'attack'.

"Koopa is very friendly," he points out needlessly.

"Rub his stomach," suggests L, since that seems like a harmless way to work out his enthusiasm. Without, you know, being slobbered on.

Schrodinger, for once, has simply settled down in his arms, leaving just Einstein, purring contentedly on A.

"When did our corridor turn into a petting zoo?"

"I'm just waiting for the day Mello and Near decide they need pets too. Then it'll be a petting zoo."

Koopa, it turns out, quite enjoys getting his stomach rubbed; he rolls onto his back, tongue lolling out of his mouth.

"Mello likes Schrodinger," A says with a trace of approval. "And she purrs when he pets her."

"Schrodinger is difficult to dislike."

L scritches behind her ears.

"Yeah. I don't know anyone who doesn't like Schrodinger. Even Koopa does, and he's a dog."

Although a ridiculously friendly one, as they've established.

"That. That Light. He didn't like Schrodinger, or Einstein. He didn't even look at them."

Of course, he hadn't been overwhelmingly friendly to A, either.

"I know Light," L cuts in, "he's a very... he's unpleasant. I would much rather you never talked to him again."

"Because he's a dick," Matt puts in. "Not a dick like Near can be a dick, sometimes. A complete dick."

"I didn't like him," A says softly. "He looked at me like he was studying me."

"Your instincts are very good," L reassures him.

"Yeah." Matt stands, holding Koopa. "Is it okay if we move him into L's room while I go puppy-proof my place?"

"Do you want any help still? I will, if you want, I can watch him more." He'd offer to help puppy-proof, but has no idea what to do.

"Come with him to my room, and save me from him if he becomes over-enthusiastic."

"Yeah, you can help L. I just need to get some stuff off the floor and cast a bunch of charms."

Thank God L decided they should organise Matt's room.

A laughs softly. "I will take Schrodinger's place, then, and protect you from Koopa's eagerness."

L is a little dubious about that much happiness.

Matt hesitates, then kisses L quickly on the cheek before disappearing out of the room.
