With the knowledge that L is willing to pay for any computer equipment he might need (which is a relief - he hadn't been looking forward to attempting to get his hands on someone's credit card while shopping with the world's greatest detective), Matt had gone to Hogsmeade and used the last of his money to purchase a wand.

Now he needs to find out what to do with it.

So, he's heading for the library. What he understands of wizarding culture suggests there isn't going to be much on cybermagic, but Matt isn't against figuring out things on his own.

Near spends rather a lot of time in the library. Having a whole new field to study, such a broad one at that, is something he hasn't experienced in so long...

But he has a promise to fulfill. He's told L he'll find a charm to soundproof his room, and now he's searching for one.

And that's when he runs into Matt. Not literally, but almost; he has to stop short not to bump into him.

Nervously, he nods. "Hello."

"Uh. Hey." Matt shoves his hands deep in his pockets.

This is nice and awkward. He doesn't know whether Mello's told Near, and if has, he doesn't know what. And he doesn't know how Near had reacted to it.

So he sticks to what he knows.

"Been enjoying the game?"

"I'm... afraid I haven't been able to give it much attention." Matt's room is even closer than L's, Near realizes. He'll probably be relieved to hear what Near's been busy with. "I'm looking for a soundproofing spell."

"Good. You guys woke me up." Matt pushes back a wave of completely irrational irritation - why can't Near just be quiet, like any other person? - and smiles, a little nervously.

After all, the stuff they've been getting up to has been pretty - percussive. Matt doesn't want to think about it, and apparently the iPod he'd found just wasn't going to cut it.

"Uh. Any luck, so far?"

"I've found a few, but I haven't tried any yet. I can't exactly experiment with them in the library, after all. And I suspect I won't be able to fully test them by myself."

"Right. Well. Good luck with it."

Matt's beginning to worry slightly. Because Near isn't saying about what happened, and - as far as Matt's been able to tell - Near isn't the type to shy away from uncomfortable topics of conversation.

"I got a wand," he says, almost at random.

"So you'll be practicing magic as well, good... what sorts of spells are you looking to learn?"

"I'm not sure. There's probably something I can adapt to use with the sort of thing I already do, hacking and stuff, but if it makes it too easy I'd rather..."

Deep breath.

"Near. Uh." He pauses, nearly backing out, but he can't exactly say 'nothing' and keep talking about magic. "Look, I... I slept with Mello."

It's tempting, suddenly, to make a scene. To blow up the way he was too insecure to have done at Matt.

If he was a naturally demonstrative person, he might have done just that.

Luckily for Matt, he isn't.

"Mello told me." His tone became a bit sharper. "Does this mean you'll be even more insistent that we're 'a bad idea'?"

Phoenix Wright was in a dilemma.

Nothing new, honestly, but this was slightly different from 'prove this guy innocent'.

He upset a little girl.

Granted, he upset her by telling the truth, but little kids don't want to hear that sometimes.

He seriously needed to smile.

So as Matt passed by, Phoenix called out "Don't turn your hair into cheese!"

Matt stopped, and blinked at the guy who'd called out to him.

"Don't... what?"

"Turn your hair into cheese. That happened to me once, and I felt like warning you." Phoenix explained with a sheepish grin.

"Oh. Stuff like that happen a lot here?" Matt supposed it would, what with the whole 'magical school' thing. "How did it happen?"

"Messed up a spell. I seem to do that a lot actually." Phoenix held out his hand. "Haven't seen you before. Phoenix Wright."

"Matt." He takes Phoenix's hand. If pressed, he'll claim his surname is Thomas. "I've not tried any spellcasting yet - well, apart from choosing my wand, I guess. That was pretty weird."

"It was, wasn't it? I'm not sure how I messed up the cheese spell, but make sure you pronounce things correctly. That's how I messed up the rain spell."

"Pronounce things properly. Got it." Matt actually quite liked languages, so he didn't think that would be too tricky. "What happened when you mis-pronounced the rain spell?"

"Matt!"

The hallway outside of the library. L calls out quickly, before he can lose his nerve, because the last time he saw Matt was... an adventure.

Matt glances up, then smiles. "Ryuuzaki, hey." He strolls over, hands in his pockets, because he is much more used to having dumb drunk adventures with people.

"What's up?"

"Would now be an appropriate moment to go in to town?"

He's getting a little antsy.

Matt blinks, then shrugs. "I don't see why not. We just need to find a fireplace - there should be one in any of the rooms..."

"How would a fireplace accomplish that?"

L hasn't had exposure to that kind of magic.

"You get this powder - I've got a packet of it in one of my pockets - throw it into a fireplace, say the name of the place you want to go to and... somehow you wind up there. Apparently."

"Really?"

How alarming. Well, L's all for it. He pokes his nose into the nearest door- success. A fireplace.

"Let's use this one."

"Yeah," Matt says, rummaging through pockets for something that doesn't cause cancer for once. "We need to go one at a time, though."

Ah ha! He pulls out a small ziplock bag full of (admittedly suspicious-looking) powder. "You want to go first, or shall I?"
