With the knowledge that L is willing to pay for any computer equipment he might need (which is a relief - he hadn't been looking forward to attempting to get his hands on someone's credit card while shopping with the world's greatest detective), Matt had gone to Hogsmeade and used the last of his money to purchase a wand.

Now he needs to find out what to do with it.

So, he's heading for the library. What he understands of wizarding culture suggests there isn't going to be much on cybermagic, but Matt isn't against figuring out things on his own.

"So what's the plan when we get back? Want me to help set up the computer right away, or are you going to find Near and give him his lego first?"

Train of thought, derailed. Toxic spills. Evacuate!

The detective has turned at a right angle, cutting through the flow of mall traffic, and is making straight for a glass window leading into a display case. Because hmm.

"What - Ryuuzaki--?"

Matt fights his way through the crowd with considerably less ease - despite having less to carry (God he hates being out in places like this) - eventually working his way to the shop L had made a beeline for.

When he sees what it is, he blinks.

"What...?"

There are four little kittens, in various combinations of asleep and playing and chasing each other around. Oh, no, wait, five. One was underneath two of the others in their bed.

"We need to make one more stop, please?"

"You... want a kitten?"

Blink.

"I want to get A a kitten."

He leans forwards. His nose is practically pressed to the glass.

Matt doesn't really get the appeal of kittens. They're cute, he supposes, in an insubstantial, fluffy sort of way, but they're not particularly affectionate or loyal. They just kinda... eat food then go away.

"Are you sure he could handle looking after a pet?"

"Yes."

He says this without question.

"And it would give him something to be responsible for; somewhere concrete to focus his loyalty. He has cared for one before, but B killed it. I think he would be happy."

"Alright. As long as he wouldn't... freak out, thinking it was another test or something." Matt comes a little closer, watching the kittens. "What one, d'you think?"

"You pick."

He blinks at the things.

"I do not know the qualifications of a suitable cat."

"Uhm." Neither does Matt, but okay. "Well..."

There's a little white kitten. It's not the smallest of the bunch - no point in giving A one that might end up being sickly or whatever - but it's close to it. Maybe it'd need more nurturing than a bigger one? Maybe that'd make it a little more loyal?

Cats were finicky little things, after all.

"How about that one?" he says, indicating the white kitten to L.

"Acceptable. Let's go in."

He abandons kitten watching to make his way into the pet shop.

Matt follows, feeling faintly disappointed that there doesn't appear to be a corresponding litter of puppies.

"We'd like the white one, please," L tells the cashier, who's mercifully not talking to anyone, because he might have just pushed past them.

"The kitten."

Matt hides a snicker at the cashier's reaction; he wishes he could be as... well.

"I just hope B doesn't kill this one, too," he mutters to L as the man goes to collect A's new pet.

"I hope not. But they are no longer living together."

So that can't go too wrong, hopefully.

"A loathes him. I trust him to keep it safe. I think it shall be named Schrodinger."

"But she's female," interjects the cashier, and L gives him a dirty look before turning to pick out a bag of kitten food and a toy.

"So?" Matt asks, but not before the cashier plonks the kitten on the counter in front of him and stomps off to get... something.

The tiny kitten looked up at Matt and mewled. Matt blinked at it.

"Hmm."

"A will like her," says L, sounding pleased and proud and a little nervous, "I hope."

'Mew,' says Schrodinger, looking around for brother and sister kittens. Of which there are none. 'Mew.' Pad-pad-pad, go the paws on the counter.

"Yeah, probably."

Experimentally, Matt reaches out and strokes the kitten's back with one finger.

"... hmm."

She scampers in a circle, trying to follow his finger, to catch his hand. His glove may get chewed on, just a little.

The cashier returns with a cardboard box, which he begins folding into shape. L watches on, rather amused by the proceedings.

"We can get most of what we need from the house-- staff."

Matt wasn't expecting that, and definitely wasn't expecting tiny claws to dig into the gloves - not deep enough to get to his flesh, but deep enough to make it tricky to pull the little thing away. Which Matt does not succeed in doing.

"Yeah. Wait, we're carrying her back in a cardboard box?"

"Do you really want to carry a kitten through a mall? You'll be clawed to pieces." The cashier begins to aid in extricating Matt from Schrodinger's grip.

"As long as there are airholes," L guesses, "it should be fine for short distances. We are ten minutes from being home. I will let her out in my room, until I can find A."

"No, I don't want to carry it... I just thought, you know, you got those little carrying cage things."

Once Schrodinger is safely desposited into the cardboard box, Matt sighs and picks it up. "I really fucking hope I don't drop this."

The cashier makes a strangled noise, and L hands him the credit card.

"You will not. And there is not far to go."

From the box, comes a tiny, muffled 'mew.'

Matt looks completely uncomfortable. He could be a harbinger of kitteny doom. He doesn't even want to think about the technicalities of holding a live kitten while being magically transported back to the Highlands via fireplace.

"Okay."
