... so Near had been dragged off by one of those elf things for 'detention'. Matt snorted. This whole place was so damned weird - a school that had bars, but still handed out detention? The hell?

But they'd agreed to have a drink after the whole radio thing, so here Matt was. He lounged outside the door, smoking a cigarette and frowning. Matt wasn't sure what to think of the radio show. Near was, at the very least, a friendly acquaintance, and from the sound of things... well. What the hell had happened?

He'd find out soon enough, he figured.

"Sex isn't supposed to - have you seen your neck?" Part of Matt knew that there was no good reason for his irritation; that Mello could have sex with whoever the fuck he wanted, even robotic albinos with toy fetishes. Whatever. None of his business.

"It's not what?" Matt was right, he did know Mello, and Near was curious about what he had to say, even if he wouldn't necessarily agree.

"It's not a good idea," Matt repeated, stubbing out his cigarette.

"Why?" He wanted to know Matt's rationale for the statement. "I'm not proposing to him, I'm sleeping with him. And I'm well aware that it's Mello, with all the hot temper that comes with him." He managed not to append that with, and it makes him a spitfire in the sack.

"Because - it just isn't, okay? He's already got this pathological obsession with beating you, and everything gets more complicated when you add sex to the mix."

"Unless he's content with beating me literally." Near couldn't help chuckling. "And yeah, it feels kind of complicated. But it also feels good, and there isn't enough that feels good for me to be willing to abandon it."

"What?" Matt flushed. "I told you - I think it's a bad idea. Mello's my best friend, and you're an alright guy, and you're - just doing something really fucking stupid, okay?"

Matt rubbed his head, taking another drink. "Look. Sex... it complicates stuff - it fogs up your head, you know? And that's fine - go get laid, fuck whoever you like, but... why Mello?"

"Somehow I doubt toy design would be as... diverting." He sighed, shifting in his seat again. As much as the bruises on his back ached, they also made him smile slightly in remembrance. "Fogging up my head is the point. I need a break from too much clarity. As for why Mello... we may be in conflict in other areas, but so far we seem to be quite complementary sexually." Understatement, understatement, understatement. "And he knows me. Knows me, and still doesn't think of me as L. You have no idea how grounding that is."

"... seriously, Near, I don't need details." He pulled himself back onto the counter and sat with elbows on knees. "Couldn't you go with someone who doesn't know anything about L?"

"...what details?" Near didn't see how he was being at all detailed. "And if they didn't know me... they wouldn't know the difference, and I'd still be... I don't think I fully understand it."

"About... never mind." He was trying - really trying - not to be pissed off, because... there was nothing to be pissed off about. Neither of them had done anything wrong; they were just being STUPID. That must have been it. Mello and Near were both being fuckwits, despite being two of the smartest people... well, ever. "Fine. I'd just like to state for the record that this is not going to end well."

God, Matt, if you only knew... But Near wasn't about to tell Matt what Mello had told him about the true nature of Wammy's House. Maybe Mello would tell him. "Nothing ends well, Matt. No one gets out of this world alive, and death is rarely dignified. I've never been able to have any sort of actual life, why shouldn't I grab a fraction if it's offered?" And I don't want to lose whatever it is between Mello and me.

"Your objection to what?" I ask, walking in on the conversation. "Get me one of those," I point at their cups, "while you're at it." I slide onto a stool a couple down from Near.

Matt very nearly choked on his drink. Still, he did as asked, pouring a Jack Daniels and coke before sliding it down the counter towards Mello.

God-fucking-damn it. He'd wanted his first drink with Mello to be - well, not like this, anyway. Awkward at best; potentially a disaster.
