"Your objection to what?" I ask, walking in on the conversation. "Get me one of those," I point at their cups, "while you're at it." I slide onto a stool a couple down from Near.

Matt very nearly choked on his drink. Still, he did as asked, pouring a Jack Daniels and coke before sliding it down the counter towards Mello.

God-fucking-damn it. He'd wanted his first drink with Mello to be - well, not like this, anyway. Awkward at best; potentially a disaster.

"... to you fucking Near, basically. Why didn't you tell me?"

I scowl, looking at the drink. "At the time, I didn't want to think about it." I looked away from both of them. "It's not like I planned to...I was...pissed the first time...and he...responded...made me think...or not think...and one thing led to another..."

"I'm not stupid, Mello - I must've turned up like ten minutes after you'd finished! You didn't even say... And then when I sent you that letter and you said --" He cut himself off, scowling behind his goggles. "Look. I just... you could've told me."

I frown at Matt. "When have I ever discussed anything I wasn't ready for?" I shot back at him. I back down a little. "Look, it was a shock to me. And...and..." I took a long drink of the JD and coke. "I thought it was a once off."

Although Near didn't get up, he turned his face away. He didn't want to hear this, but couldn't make himself stop listening.

From:

"Look..." All the anger was draining away, replaced by a heavy feeling. He supposed it would make sense #1 and #2, together at last. "I just thought, y'know - we're just back from being dead or whatever... I thought we'd get more of a chance to hang out and stuff." Matt was aware he sounded petulant. "Properly. Not cell-phone conversations - no mob, no Kira, no..."

Matt didn't finish his sentence, but yep. 'No Near' was what he wanted to say.

I frown. "Why can't we? What's to stop us? Besides, I still have to beat you at Tekken!" What the hell was to stop us from hanging out. Did he thing that Near and I were joined at the hip or something?

"So you're not going to get all... crazy-obsessed? Because I can remember you ranting about Near for HOURS when we were just supposed to be hanging out. Back at Wammy's." Still, he was smiling again, if a bit cautiously.

"And you will never beat me at Tekken."

From:

I spit into my drink. "I did not rant about Near!" I can feel my face warming. Must be the drink. "And, I ..." I can't say I don't do 'crazy-obsessed' because that's what they taught us at Whammy's. I wonder if this was just an out-growth of that...another game they were playing with us. I look over at Near a moment before turning back to Matt. "I'll beat you in Tekken!"

Did Matt think I was competition? Idiot. He was Mello's friend. I was just...

"Yeah, you did. And no, you won't." Matt was grinning properly now, pulling out a cigarette. He still wasn't - comfortable with the whole thing, but he never could stay pissed off with Mello. As much as the bastard deserved it sometimes.

"... I still don't think it's a good idea. As long as you know that."

From:

I smirk. He's probably right. "But, when has anything I've done been a good idea? And, yes, I will." Probably shouldn't be reminded that some of my best plans left us ... maybe he was right...

"When have you ever beaten me at a video game?" Matt poured himself another drink, puffing on his cigarette. "... some of your ideas haven't worked out that great. I don't want you to..." He shrugged, uncomfortable.

I look down, whispering, not really wanting to be heard. "It's something I need. I'm not saying forever, I'm not saying anything like that, but...I need it, Matt. And, I need you, too." To be without either of them would be hell. I couldn't endure that.

Near doesn't want to hear what Mello's whispering. Probably some slight, some insult, reassuring Matt that the 'mistake' was over and done with.

From:

"... okay. As long as I'm not out of the picture, right?"

From:

I almost laugh. "What would I be without both of you?"

From:

That got Near's attention. He turned and stared, mouth hanging ungracefully open.

Matt laughed, playfully punching Mello on the chest. On second thoughts, he slung his arm around Mello's shoulder. "Sorry, Near," he said gravely. "Mello and I needed to have a man-to-man. A totally manly one."

"I thought you wanted to get beaten at Tekken," I say. I feel my face growing warm again. What the hell?
