... so Near had been dragged off by one of those elf things for 'detention'. Matt snorted. This whole place was so damned weird - a school that had bars, but still handed out detention? The hell?

But they'd agreed to have a drink after the whole radio thing, so here Matt was. He lounged outside the door, smoking a cigarette and frowning. Matt wasn't sure what to think of the radio show. Near was, at the very least, a friendly acquaintance, and from the sound of things... well. What the hell had happened?

He'd find out soon enough, he figured.

I reach out, though I don't realize it until I see my hand. "Near..." What now?

That was unexpected. Stopping short, Near turned to face Mello. "Yes?" he asked softly. "I thought you two were bonding."

"There's no game consoles here and we're not drunk yet. The whole point of playing Tekken is to do it drunk." I look at Matt and back at Near. "You don't have to leave yet." Why the fuck did I care? Only, I didn't want him leaving like that. Not yet. I wasn't satisfied with our...relationship yet.

"I'm fonder of puzzles I can touch than of video games." But Near couldn't make himself pull away from Mello's hand. He leaned in a little closer. "If you're going to decide I'm a bad idea, I'd rather not watch it happen, if that's okay." He tried to force a breezy tone.

I hand him a drink. "I haven't had a good idea yet, but I stick with them. You should know that. Kampai!" I swallow quickly, feeling the burn of the alcohol under the sweet of the coke. "Just hang around until we start gaming or something. Then you can go off and play with your robots if you want to."

That was... almost reassuring, as reassuring as Mello was likely to get. Near raised his glass and took a swallow, too large a swallow; it was much stronger than the drink Matt had fixed him earlier. He tried to hide his cough behind a smile. "I didn't say anything about robots."

I roll my eyes. "Robots are you favorite. They're the ones you go to when most confused." I point at him, my hand wavering. Matt mixed these strong. I wonder, as much as I can at the moment, if Near's a lightweight. He'll probably pass out long before Matt and I are ready to play video games.

"Is that how I look? Confused?" Near stepped closer, close enough to wrap his arm around Mello's waist. "I wouldn't say favorite."

... well, that was just - ugh. It wasn't that... obviously Matt knew Mello'd had lovers before. He'd just never been around to see them. And for it to be NEAR was just -

Matt stood up suddenly. "Shots. We should do shots." He looked at Near. "Uh, if this is your first time drinking, you might want to stick to JD."

Already a bit buzzed and more than a little frazzled, Near gave him a look.

"Screw that. I'm old enough to decide what I will and won't drink."

"First time? Shit, Matt..." But, I'm feeling nice and light already. What did Matt put in that drink.

Matt frowned. "If you insist, Near, but... it's really not a good idea."

He hopped easily over the bar - it was obvious that he quite enjoyed doing that - and started rummaging around for something for them to drink.

"Is there something wrong with that?" He tightened his arm around Mello's waist and rested his chin on his shoulder. "Everything needs a first time."

Apparently being intoxicated made Near awfully touchy-feely.

Why do I feel like a fucking tug-of-war rope? "Well, if he wants to play," I slur out, "let's do some Everclear, then." Strangely...I...almost like...this...I think. Fuck, what did Matt...in the drink?

Matt took a deep breath before grabbing three shot glasses and a bottle of Everclear. "Jesus, Mello, are you done in already?" he asks, laughing - until he straightens up, and the room tilts slightly.

Huh. Was the booze here different, too?

Shrugging it off, Matt poured them a shot each. "Here you go, gentlemen. If either of you are sick it's sure as hell not going to be who cleans it up."

"Oh, fuck that," Near muttered, and gave the glass a brief glance. Well whatever it was, it was clear. Hopefully that was a good sign? He poured it down his throat in one go, just like on TV...

...and bent double in a fit of coughing.

"I told you," Matt said, fighting not to snicker. He could still feel the alcohol burning his throat, but at least he was used to it.

I choke on the liquor. "Shit, what is this, 180-190 proof?" The room swirls around me and I'm really warm. "Damn."

That must be why he hadn't quite been able to stand up straight yet.

"You guys are such lightweights," Matt giggled. He hoisted himself back up to sit on the counter, taking another half-shot to emphasise his point.

"Fuck. You." Still crouched from his coughing fit, Near grabbed Mello's leg and attempted to climb him.

"Errr...." I've only had a couple of shots...what's my problem? "Hand!" I yelp as Near's hand gets dangerously close to grabbing me.

Matt stared for a moment, then rubbed his head, kicking his heels off the side of the bar. "I'm sorry, but... that's just fucking weird, okay? No two ways about it."

"You! You gave me that. Stuff." By that time he'd just about reached Mello's waist and was aiming a hand at his shoulder. "I don't want any more."

I blink at Matt, trying not to yelp again as Near grabs parts of my body on his way up. "We should...home...bed...take him....yeah..."
