OOC: While the people below have signed up, this is open for anyone to enter the crazy.

So. It's Valentine's Day. Turlough had rounded up a few house elves to do his bidding. Said bidding was to set up tables with name cards, a table with food and drink (which may or may not be hexed, I couldn't decide), and a sign:

We will not be responsible for anyone fed love potions.

Because someone will.

We also will not be responsible for any actions here on in.

Turlough stood in the corner of the Great Hall, drink in hand, smirk on face as he watched people come on (or forced in by cattleprod point, in Soichiro's case.)

"Two mechanics in a row, then. Maybe the powers that be are trying to tell me something," said Charles with a rueful grin. Broken and in need of a mechanic's attention? "Anyway not everyone here can possibly be as good at magic as they think they are. Hardly anyone's had any formal training. I bet there's more call for a mechanic than meets the eye." He glanced around. "Why don't I get us some punch or something? No reason not to enjoy the evening. Really, it's for the best I got matched up with a married person, since I'm sort of seeing someone myself. She's over there." Charles pointed to a young woman, pretty in a pale sort of way, being regaled with some kind of story by none other than Homestar Runner. (http://community.livejournal.com/hogwarts_hocus/1538830.html?thread=77801486#t77801486) "With the ... walking armless marshmallow stick creature."

"Punch sounds nice," Winry said, following the direction he was pointing, and she smiled. "Oh, Susan! I've met her, she wanted me to fix something called a remote control, but I didn't know what it was."

"Remote control? You'd need to be an electrician to fix one of those, probably. Anyway I think most people just go buy a new one." Not that Winry could be expected to know that, Charles realized, if she didn't even know what a remote control was. "Hold that thought just a second?"

He was over to the punch table and back as quickly as possible -- never spilling a drop, thanks to long practice toting drinks around with much impaired equilibrium -- he didn't want to leave his own date to the mercies of whatever Homestar-like creatures might be lurking about. "Here's hoping no one spiked it," he said, handing her a glass. "You don't know what remote controls are, you were saying. Does that mean you've never seen televisions?"

Winry looked down at her glass of punch before looking back up at Charles. "Is that something that would happen? Spiking the punch, I mean." Not having experienced body-swapping chocolate, Winry didn't know everything the inhabitants of this castle were capable of. Of course, that was probably for the better.

"No, we don't have them where I'm from," Winry said, smiling again. "The radio is about the most technologically advanced thing we have. And telephones, we have telephones."

Hm. If Winry didn't know about the perennial bouts of enchanted food, Charles probably wasn't doing her any favors by talking about it. "All kinds of things get spiked around here. Myself, I've pretty well decided that it isn't sensible to go around being afraid everything's contaminated. Chances are, it isn't, and if it is, I won't be the only one making a fool of myself." He lifted his glass. "Bottoms up." And drank. "There, now if nothing bizarre happens to me in the next five minutes or so, you'll know the punch is safe."

He clearly wasn't serious about this. It was just some of the good old Macaulay charm: lighthearted foolery, something at which Charles excelled when he wasn't being a sullen moody killjoy.

"If you're brave enough to drink it, so am I," Winry said, and she took a deep drink to prove her point. "At least it tastes good." Still... "What do you mean by bizarre? It'd be good to have some sort of an idea what might be about to happen to us."

Ah, non-alcoholic fruit punch. Charles had sort of been playing roulette where the punch was concerned, and now he didn't know whether to be relieved or disappointed. That wasn't what he'd meant about spiking punch in the Hogwarts context, though, and he explained. "Oh, all kinds of mass hysteria. It always wears off in the end. Never happened to me personally. One time some kind of magic brownies turned my sister into a seven-year-old, though." He wished those would go around again.

Winry laughed and shook her head. "I guess I should have expected an answer like that. This place is so weird. Just the other day I met a little green boy, with a green dog. And of course there's the walking armless marshmallow man." She paused to peer over at Homestar. "Assuming that is a man."

Charles peered at Homestar too. "I think the jury's still out on that one. So, tell me about your husband." He grinned. It could be a fun evening without having to have any romantic overtones, after all.

Winry blushed again and took another sip of her punch. "Well, we grew up together, back where we're from," she said. "Ed was always busy once we got older, so we never really got a chance to be together until we both ended up here." She paused and tilted her head to the side as she looked up at Charles. "He's been here longer than I have, you might know him. Edward Elric?"

From: [identity profile] charlesmacaulay.livejournal.com
Charles's grin faded into something softer and sadder, something that couldn't quite be called a smile. "You grew up together? That's lovely, that you found one another again. Can't say I've met an Edward Elric, no." It wasn't Edward Elric he was thinking about, obviously.

Winry frowned sympathetically and reached out to lay her hand over the back of Charles'. "Oh, I'm sorry, did I say something wrong? I didn't mean to upset you."

The reassuring little gesture did warm him a little. He smiled his sad smile at Winry — that wistful faraway slight smile. "No, you didn't say anything wrong. What you said just reminded me of someone I grew up with, that's all. So what brought you back together, you and Edward? Just the magic of Hogwarts? Did house elves with cattle prods have anything to do with it?" He was striving for a glint of humor. Maybe it sounded a little forced, but he was trying.

"Oh, well... I guess it was bound to happen eventually. There was... no one else I really liked growing up, so if it wasn't Ed, I probably wouldn't have found anyone else," she said softly, a tiny smile creeping over her lips.

No one else I really liked growing up ... I probably wouldn't have found anyone else.

"I know how that is." Sharp envy stabbed through him, a lightning streak through the diffusion of his gloom. The way Winry smiled when she talked about Edward was the way Camilla used to smile back when. The way he knew he still couldn't help smiling sometimes when he remembered.

"Is that really why you love him, though? Just because the two of you grew up together so you imprinted on him?"

"There's a lot to love about Ed," Winry said softly, unsure what would make this worse and what would turn the conversation back to a safe place. "Just like I'm sure there's a lot that you like about Susan."

Wait, what did Susan have to do with anything? The remark jolted Charles out of his emo reverie a little. Oh, right.

He couldn't help it. With a low hoarse rueful chuckle, he rubbed his forehead. She must think he was talking about Susan, and who could blame her? Logical assumption, right? "Susan's a very nice girl," he said candidly. "A good sport. Tough as nails. I think if I'd known her in my childhood I wouldn't have survived my childhood."

Winry smiled, relieved they had avoided something uncomfortable, and leaned forward as she listened to Charles. "Why do you say that? That you wouldn't have survived, I mean."

"I told you just now about how my sister got turned into a seven-year-old for a little while. Well, Susan got turned into a child too, and Camilla says that Susan went after some other kids with a croquet mallet. I wasn't the best-behaved child myself, so ..." He shrugged one shoulder. "It wouldn't have ended well, I'm sure. What were you and Ed like as children?"

Winry laughed softly, though there was a faint tinge of pink to her cheeks. Chasing the other kids with croquet mallets sounded like something she would do. But then her smile turned slightly melancholy, and she sighed and shook her head.

"We both sort of had a hard childhood," she said softly. "There was a war while we were growing up, and my parents were doctors, so they had to go off to the war."
