Pretty Solid Friend Material ((Open RP))

Hogwarts was great, as far as back-from-the-dead scenarios went. The classes were sparse but interesting, the food was good, and people were adequately prepared for the threat of evil-clowns. Hogwarts was so great, in fact, that it had taken Steph nearly two months to realize her social circle was pretty much composed of old(er!) male vigilantes. It was kind of like hanging out with your uncles, and no one else. The uncles were undoubtedly cool, but still! A gal needed variety.

This was unacceptable. Steph was likeable, dagnabbit! But meeting people was kind of hard. It wasn’t as if she could put up sign, wait around with cookies, and see who was interested.

Hm. Actually, that wasn’t the worst idea she’d ever had. Who didn’t like cookies? Or things written on posterboard?

Steph walked into the great hall, tacked up a sign, and put out cookies and punch (House elves were all kinds of awesome).

"What are they gonna do, ground you?" She rolls her eyes and laughs. "Come on, live a little. And hey, the magic thing's not that hard. Point a wand, mutter a few words, dren happens." She cocks her head and grins. "If half the people here can do a few tricks, anyone can. Seriously, have you seen some of these people? A few of them actually think I'm a human in a costume. Frelling ignorant."

"Oh, they'll do worse. There would be chin ups, and protein bars." And no possibility of a Spoiler Plane! Steph made a face. "Seriously? You'd think people had never seen an alien before."

She's genuinely confused. "What's that got to do with anything? Can't you just tell them to frell off?"

She nods, brandishing a cookie for emphasis. "I know! And, I know you probably don't mean anything by it, but I'm a Nebari, not an alien. 'Alien' always sounds weird."

"I could, but then they wouldn't train me." She shrugged. "And there's that whole respecting-them-as-people thing." Ugh. Stephanie Brown had become a nerd.

"Sorry! I'm bad with generalizing. I've never heard of Nebari before. Is it pretty far from Earth? Relatively speaking."

"Oh. I guess that makes sense." She still looks dubious.

"Yeah, not a problem. Yeah, pretty far. Had to take a wormhole to get here. Really crappy planet, though, you're not missing out by never hearing about it."

Steph smiled and grabbed another cookie. Junk food was a gift from the heavens.

"How's the jet lag work out with wormholes?"

If Chiana could read minds, she would emphatically agree. "Better than you'd think, honestly. You come here on your own, or just sorta sucked in?"

"Kind of sucked in. I think it's an afterlife thing." Steph tried her best not to look emo. Baby steps. "What about you?"

"I think I'm one of the few who actually came here by choice. I needed to get away." She grins. "Welcome back to the living, though."

"I know what that's like." Steph grinned, and stretched out her arms, because it was pretty neat that she had muscles to stretch. Being corporeal rocked. "Thanks. It's great to be back!"

"I'm Chiana," she finally says, realizing that she hasn't introduced herself yet. "Slytherin."

"I'm, um-" she gestured to the sign "-yup. Steph. Gryffindor. Nice to meet ya!"

"You too. So where're you from, other than dead?"

"Gotham City. It's in America, on the northeast coast." She couldn't really call Gotham a great place to live, so she settled on "awesome restaurants. You can get Chinese-food delivered at 4 in the morning."

"Would have killed for that in the old days. Maybe even literally." She had never had Chinese food before coming here, but there had been enough food shortages on Moya that she would have eaten almost anything if it had held still long enough.

"I wouldn't blame you. Sesame noodles alone are at least worth a maiming. Throw in some egg rolls, and I’d consider a spinal injury." On her part, Steph was joking. Besides, maimings made her feel all squicky. You couldn’t enjoy egg foo young in a state of squick.

"Don't think I'd go that far, but anything's better than food cubes and fried larvae and starving."

"Damn. And I thought my childhood was crap." Government cheese was at least better than larvae! "When I do turn 18, I'm buying you a drink. Or a pizza."

"Hey, I had a great childhood." She frowns. "Except for the attempts at brainwashing, and occasional guys who got too rough or didn't pay, and getting treated for that disease--great being STD-free, but frell did it hurt--and starving and all. But my brother and I had a great time otherwise." She grins. "You know, you don't actually have to pay for stuff here. Isn't it great?"

"Ugh. Brainwashing." It slipped out before she remembered that normal teenage girls weren't usually brainwashed. "I mean, that sounds terrible." She suppressed a grimace- very smooth.

"Yeah. It's kind of weird, though. Not having to worry about the little stuff."

"Oh, you too? I thought they didn't generally pull that dren here on Earth?" She giggled a bit at the last part. "Oh yeah. I dunno if I've started taking it all for granted yet, but I think I'm definitely getting used to it. The lack of people trying to kill me is a nice bonus, too."

"Yeah, Gotham's kind of a weird place to live." Steph laughed. "That no-kill spell is just a great, great idea. It even keeps the bad guys placated."

"Can't say I've heard of it. Then again, I'm only familiar with Florida and here."

"Florida is the exact opposite of here. From what I hear, it's humid, and smells kind of like ointment. And old people. Why are you familiar with Florida? Take a trip to Disneyland?"

"I've been there twice. Once was in 1984. I frelled Crichton!" She looks very pleased with herself for that. "In a truck. And, seriously? You humans need to be more clear with your hand gestures. Apparantly this--" she holds up her middle finger-- "isn't a greeting. Who knew?"
