Although Fraser had offered Ray a trip to London after Boxing Day, as it turned out it took a few days more before they actually managed the journey. Little things kept getting in the way -- for one thing, Fraser had wanted to try and find Ray's room, the one his ringer had been assigned to nine months ago. He was worried that getting his partner set up with a new room might compromise his cover, and so there was that, surreptitiously attempting to find out where the man had been sent without giving it away that neither he nor Ray had any idea at all where he or his things were supposed to be. Ray had been living in his room since then, and that had brought a whole host of things with it, such as a good hour spent cleaning up coffee cups, candy wrappers, and other pieces of Ray Kowalski detritus that had no place in a Benton Fraser home.
Anyway, the upshot of all this was that it took them a little longer than expected to get to London, though the trip wound up being just as successful and eventful as they both might have hoped. They'd gotten Ray a wand for his new holster, along with a couple of rudimentary books on beginner's magic; had an excellent meal in the city; and then on the way back had somehow gotten involved in a rather strange altercation involving a thief, a bag of goldfish, several angry children and a pair of high heels. With the man in custody, they finally made it back to Hogwarts and Gryffindor, to their room.
Fraser, for one, was tired but pleased. The past few weeks had been a little strange, but there was nothing like getting involved in bizarre and potentially life-threatening situations with Ray to make him feel right at home. "Well," he said cheerfully to Ray, hefting their bag of goodies up onto his shoulder as they approached the door, "I imagine he'll think twice next time."

Date: 2007-01-03 05:45 am (UTC)Fraser'd built this second cot from god knows where, but already they had a nice steady habit -- whoever gt there first slept in the cot, and left the bed for the other. It was almost a race, some days, to make sure the ther got the bed.

Date: 2007-01-03 05:57 am (UTC)But as it turned out, tonight, it didn't matter one way or the other. "Honestly, I wish you would..." he began, but whatever he was going to say didn't get a chance to come out, the words dying in his throat as he turned to look at the room. "Ah."
As Fraser didn't have a wolf permit for London, Dief had been forced to remain behind while they went out. Apparently, he had decided to wreak his vengeance upon them by somehow dragging the bedroll he normally occupied up onto the cot, and he was now lying atop both of them, looking both quite comfortable and like he had absolutely no intention of moving.

Date: 2007-01-03 06:04 am (UTC)He reached down to scruff behind Dief's ears. "C'mon, man, I just want to collapse."

Date: 2007-01-03 06:20 am (UTC)Apparently, however, Dief was in a stubborn mood tonight. He butted his head playfully against Ray's hand, panting happily, but affected total ignorance when it came to their requests. He didn't move -- in fact, he shifted to burrow himself even more comfortably into the cot-roll.

Date: 2007-01-03 06:31 am (UTC)He sighs. "We're not getting him out tonight. Leave'm alone." He sat on the edge of the bed. Rock paper scissors, loser takes the couch in the common room? No, bad idea. He glanced over his shoulder at the huge bed and then sighed. "Fraser, we're both grownups, yeah? There's plenty of room in the bed." And he'll pretend that didn't send an odd sensation up his spine to suggest.

Date: 2007-01-03 06:48 am (UTC)"Ray, letting him get his way is only going to reinforce his bad behavior," he protested over Ray's suggestion, not immediately listening to what he'd actually said. "I don't want him thinking he can just do what he likes..." He paused, then blinked, turning to look up at Ray from his spot on the floor. "Did you just suggest that we share the bed?"

Date: 2007-01-03 07:01 am (UTC)Sighing, he glanced around, then shrugged stiffly. "I suppose I'll take the floor, then. Or I believe there's a couch out in the Common Room, although..." He compressed his lips thoughtfully, leaning his head to the side till his neck cracked. "Well, that wouldn't really be very appropriate. Right, the floor, then. You go ahead and crash, Ray; I'll just, ah... locate some bedding."
Really, he knew Ray was being perfectly logical. The bed was extremely big for one person, and there was no reason they couldn't both be comfortable on it. He'd seen the way Ray slept, but as long as they both kept to their sides that shouldn't be a problem. For some reason, though, the idea wasn't proving very relaxing to him.

Date: 2007-01-03 07:15 am (UTC)"You make a very good case, Ray," he sighed weakly, scratching his eyebrow. "Very well." Moving over to the closet, he began to disrobe, carefully shedding the various pieces of his uniform -- the Stetson, the Sam Brown, and so forth.

Date: 2007-01-03 07:21 am (UTC)He flopped back on the bed, selected a pillow, and gave Dief a bit of a Look before stretching and flopping back under the blankets. There, see? No big deal. He laced his fingers behind his head and waited for Fraser to get ready.

Date: 2007-01-03 07:30 am (UTC)With a sigh, he climbed carefully into his side of the bed and lay down stiff as a board, folding his arms across his chest. There was a great deal of space between himself and Ray, and almost none between himself and the edge of the bed, but that was likely for the best. Ray, from what he'd seen, tended to be a bit... expansive in his sleep, while he himself barely moved at all. Best to give Ray plenty of room, he told himself.

Date: 2007-01-03 01:34 pm (UTC)"Yeah, not much effort. Effort later. I still don't know how you do it," he adds, head propped up on his hand. "Or why you bother." He punched up the pillow and curled up on his side, facing Fraser at first. But that felt... odd. So he turned over, back to Fraser that time. Better. Not as, you know. Sleeping in the same bed-y.

Date: 2007-01-05 03:21 am (UTC)At first, he didn't understand. For half a moment, the only thing his sleep-dazed, confused mind could think of was Victoria, until the resulting jolt of hope and dread shocked him awake and he realized it couldn't be. The body was all wrong, hard where Victoria had been soft, muscular where she hadn't been and far, far too warm, and that meant--
Fraser blinked his eyes open, looked down at the sleeping face of his partner, and froze.

Fraser turned to stare at him, totally blank. Baby? Baby?Slowly, realization dawned, and he softened, clearing his throat. "Ah, Ray..." he said quietly, "I think you may have me confused with someone else." Wonderful -- Ray had been confusing him for Stella, and now on top of everything else he felt guilty. Or... bad, anyway.
