For some time now, the mod team has been aware that a number of applications have ended up stalling in the Sorting process, either because the Hat never appeared or dropped the tag in the middle of the conversation, or because the apped character stopped replying to the Hat. We also recognize that in recent months, the Hat has generally taken several weeks or longer to appear in an application. In an effort to make Sorting a more efficient process for both the players and the Hat-muns, the mod team has put together a set of guidelines on Sorting:

(1) The mods will place the Hat in a new application no later than a week after the timestamp on the application. If you are still RPing other threads within the application, do not feel pressured to wrap them up; existing RP within an application can still be carried out after the applicant has been Sorted, since in gametime, it is all considered to have transpired before the Hat comes in. There have even been instances in which a character has appeared in an app after the Hat initially tagged -- for example, if the character's mun was busy in real life and didn't have a chance to have his/her character enter before the Hat came in. This is OK, too. The point is that the Hat's appearance should not pressure you to close out a new application. We simply want to make sure that the Hat appears in a reasonable amount of time. However, please understand that the mods are only human, and we do make mistakes. If a week has transpired and the Hat has not appeared in your application, please e-mail kahnooloo@gmail.com to let us know so that we can get the Hat in ASAP. Similarly, if the Hat stops tagging for over a week in the middle of a conversation, please e-mail kahnooloo@gmail.com to let us know. Sometimes LJ notifications fail, and sometimes real life swamps us. If the Hat is being negligent, it is perfectly OK to poke us via kahnooloo's e-mail account. However, please do not poke any of the mods in IRC. This results in the possible annoyance of the poked mod (who may not even be the Hat-mun in the particular case). Further, it is important for the entire mod team to know about a dropped Hat tag, so that the Hat-mun is reminded to tag back and so that other mods can know to take action in case the Hat-mun is tied up in real life.

(2) Applicants are required to respond to each Hat tag in a similarly timely manner. If you drop a tag to the Hat for over a month, the mod team reserves the right to automatically place the character in Qanonreip so that a more interested, responsive mun can re-app him/her. (Of course, please try to tag back as quickly as possible, because the longer you wait, the more likely it is that your app will slip through the cracks.) If, in the middle of the application process, some sort of extenuating circumstances arise that necessitate a hiatus, please e-mail kahnooloo@gmail.com so that we can make arrangements to extend the deadline if need be. If you believe your character has been unfairly Qanonreip'd (e.g., in the event of an LJ notification fail -- although really, if you were interested enough in apping the character, you probably would be doublechecking the app to see if the Hat had responded to you or not), please e-mail kahnooloo and we will discuss the matter.

(3) In order to clean house a bit, the mod team went back to March 2009 in our application archives to see which applications were still pending and to address the situation. So, if you suddenly see activity in an old app or find that an old app is listed under Qanonreip (including some that date back to well before March 2009), this is why. (The latter situation would happen only to unSorted apps, so don't worry, we're not moving any Sorted characters to Qanonreip.) If we missed an old app that you know of or are unhappy with the decision we made on a particular old app, please let the mods know via kahnooloo@gmail.com.

(4) Unrelated to Sorting, but still an important reminder: When you RP in a post, be it an application, an open RP, a closed RP, a compy post, or whatever, PLEASE DO NOT FORGET TO ADD YOUR CHARACTER'S TAG TO THE POST! Not only are these tags helpful to you and your fellow players when you want to find an RP, but the mods also use them as markers of activity/inactivity when dealing with tasks such as autopopping. Do not assume that the original poster of an RP is going to maintain the post's tags, and definitely do not assume that the mods will deal with it. You are responsible for adding your characters' tags.

Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns in the comments to this post. Thanks!

The Mod Team

Hello there, cracksters. A few items of note:

Popcorn plaque and roster ...

Are way behind in maintenance. Prima will be working on it this weekend. 'Til then, if you have someone in mind for unpopping, please e-mail Prima (info is in the contact post).

Your tags (LJ tags, that is)

Please remember to add your character's tag to posts that they are in. Not only does this come in handy for your own benefit, but it is essential for the mod team in gauging recent character activity when they do autopopcorning checks.

Any other concerns with tags can be brought to Aayla's attention through the info provided in the contact post.

Contact Post

Please remember to add your information to the contact post as completely as possible for every new character you app or unpop. At the very least we need an e-mail address for you. It doesn't need to be an address that gives any personal RL information, but it DOES need to be an e-mail account you check regularly and often. Remember, too, that the contact post is alphabetical. Characters should be entered by their surname if they have one, (example: "Michael Scott" would go under S), and by given name if they have no surname (example: "Homsar" would go under H).

Because all this stuff requires maintenance and the mods are having a busy life ...

WE ADDED A NEW MOD. Please welcome the Baron Harkonnen [livejournal.com profile] i_am_harkonnen to our moderating team. The Landsraad is confident this will result in no coups d'etat whatsoever, nor any assassinations. The right to declare kanly is reserved.

Come congratulate him in chat -- #hogwarts_hocus on irc.coldfront.net :D

Hello, all our beloved players and crack addicts!

You may have noticed an app went up earlier that then was taken down. The mods asked the player to bring the application into compliance with our rules, and the player chose to take down the application instead.

We would like to believe that the players who haven't played in HH before will be paying attention to the userinfo and rules before they post an application. This was not the case with the application that just went up and then went down. However, we think it's unreasonable and silly to expect that established players go rooting through the userinfo just to see whether there have been any changes. That's why we're making the following announcement, so you'll know there has indeed been a minor change.

The New Stuff:

- We've instituted a new rule in regards to joining the community. Since there's no way we can know every fictional canon and every character's name on sight, much less from icons, the mods won't grant membership in the comm to your character journal until and unless you specify the character's name and canon in the character journal's LJ profile. We'd like to be one hundred percent sure that your intended character is indeed fictional and is not an original character. This will ensure that your membership is approved faster.

- We've also added an in-character name blank to the application. It's not a numbered question -- of the tests you've taken in your life, how many of them made your name an actual question, and how many simply required you supply the name before moving on to answer the questions? But it is an in-character part of the application, and it is required. We still expect you to put your character's name and canon in the subject line of the application, but we understand the subject line to be out-of-character information. Adding the name to the application in character just makes sense.

That's it. That's all the new stuff. But please do keep reading, because we have a couple of important reminders ...

Reminders:

Your tags (LJ tags, that is)

Please remember to add your character's tag to posts that they are in. Not only does this come in handy for your own benefit, but it is essential for the mod team in gauging recent character activity when they do autopopcorning checks. While Aayla is now in charge of adding tags to entries, she can't and shouldn't be responsible for maintaining your characters' pre-existing tags. That said, you won't be jumped on if you do forget every once in a while. Nobody's perfect.

Any other concerns with tags can be brought to Aayla's attention through the info provided in the contact post.

Contact Post

Which brings us to our final point: please remember to add your information to the contact post as completely as possible for every new character you app or unpop. At the very least we need an e-mail address for you. It doesn't need to be an address that gives any personal RL information, but it DOES need to be an e-mail account you check regularly and often.

If some players wish to contact one another via LiveJournal's private messaging system, that is between them, but not all our players use that system, so it's not helpful to comment to the contact post specifying only that a player should PM you for your information. If all of us used LJ's private messaging system, we wouldn't have or need a contact post. Thanks for working with us. Remember, too, that the contact post is alphabetical. Characters should be entered by their surname if they have one, (example: "Michael Scott" would go under S), and by given name if they have no surname (example: "Homsar" would go under H).

1. Mod team additions and departure
We're proud of our Emoz [livejournal.com profile] dungbombsrule, who's finishing her graduate program and has landed an exciting new job! Sadly, this means she'll be needing to leave the mod team (though not the game, we're happy to note).

As you may have noticed, we've fallen behind a bit in Sortings, for which we apologize. To keep things moving more quickly, former mod Cat [livejournal.com profile] dinosaurman is stepping back up to lend a hand when needed, and to replace Emoz we are adding a new full-time mod as well, Bri [livejournal.com profile] maid_brienne. Bri has been an HH player since 2006 (Tyrion Lannister's app), and we're thrilled to have her on the mod team.

2. Prefect elections!
Prefect elections are coming! Next week, in fact. Later tonight we'll make the prefect nominations post, and next Monday (Aug. 24) the actual poll for voting will be posted. Each House gets two prefects. OOCly, our rules limit a player from having more than one prefect character at a time. However, players who already have a professor character are eligible to acquire a prefect character as well. (That's 1 professor and 1 prefect per mun, if the tl;dr got confusing.) We'll link more details in the prefect nominations post. '

ETA: If you want your char nominated ICly but don't know who would do it and they wouldn't do it themselves, feel free to make an OOC note here. We got the raptor and Elric nominated!

3. Reminder: contact post
Our new contact post is taking shape as hoped, with everyone's help! It's only as useful as we all make it, though. Consider yourselves reminded: If you haven't already added your characters to the new contact post, please do so. If you've apped or popcorned someone, please add or delete them accordingly. <3

New Developments and Not-So-New Clarifications

Nowe, ich imagine ye are going “what the swyve?” (WTS?) right nowe, by cause that thinges aren a littel different around heere than what ye haue seen bifor. 1. Layout

We have one! That is, we have a new one. We hope it is clearer and more legible. More to the point, we can use it and update it with a Basic Account. The links in the sidebar have been reduced to the ones we feel are immediately useful. Rather than link to each professor's CV individually, the sidebar now links to a staff roster that houses all those CV links. The link to the years-old HH wiki has been taken down entirely, as it is by now more a historical document than anything.

Credit for the new layout goes to Kusuriyuri-mun. The header and userpic remain those that our dearly-missed Ryuuji-mun made for us at the beginning of time.

2. Contact post

The contact post is quite out of date, and we understand that its structure is part of the reason why it doesn't get updated as often as it needs. Therefore we're going to put up a new contact post. The major difference here will be that the entries go by character, not by player. You'll see what we mean when we post it.

3. Professorships!

Congratulate our new Defense Against the Dark Arts professor [livejournal.com profile] curlybrain and our new Muggle Studies professor [livejournal.com profile] i_am_harkonnen!

There remain two professorships presently unfilled, both due to popcornings. Hogwarts has openings for a Transfiguration professor and an Astronomy professor. If you already have a professor character, you can't play a second professor. If you don't have a professor character yet, and one of your characters has skills and/or interest in teaching Transfiguration or Astronomy, think about it. Grant-mun some time ago posted some advice for writing HH classes that can give you an idea of what's involved.

4. Computers and television at Hogwarts

intranet, not Internet; reality shows, not scripted shows )

A final note and/or question: Would it be helpful for us to compile some sort of List of HH!Hogwarts places? Examples might include the Compy Lab, the Mangosteen Grove, and other features of the HH campus that don't appear in HP canon.
[identity profile] ugly-old-hat.livejournal.com
Following up on last week's announcement:

By consensus, we'll be closing [livejournal.com profile] h_h_ooc. From now on, hiatus notices, fanworks, character memes and the like can be posted in the main community again. Rather than delete the OOC community, we have disabled posts to it. This way it can remain up as an archive, should anybody want to go back and revisit posts of yore.

The IRC channel #hogwarts_hocus on coldfront.net continues to be used for plotting purposes and general silliness. Instructions on how to get there can be found here. Additionally, if you're the shy type or just prefer plotting one-on-one, you can always ping or e-mail one another. Remember to update your contact information (reminder: post is friendslocked to community members only) so that others can get in touch with you, or so that you can get in touch with others. This is also important so that players of new characters can give their prospective canonmates the required heads-up before apping!

As of today, we will begin processing the autopopcorning list as scheduled. Autopopcorned characters will be removed from the roster, added to the popcorn plaque, and removed from the community userlist. If you return to the community in future and wish to unpopcorn your characters, drop us a line in the OOC questions post and we'll be happy to re-add you.

That should take care of business until the HH anniversary post this Saturday. Thanks for keeping the crack coming, and we'll see you on the astral plane!
[identity profile] ugly-old-hat.livejournal.com
HH Anniversary Event

[livejournal.com profile] hogwarts_hocus has its third birthday on Dec. 13!

To celebrate three years of crack, we're holding a crack-filled event of the sort that HH has traditionally called a "modplot". Like most such events, it will last for a day of gametime but can be RPed out for days of realtime thereafter. And like all such events, it is opt-in. Your characters do not have to participate unless you want them to be part of the event.

Hogwarts on an Astral Plane? )

Autopopcorning

We're well overdue for a round of autopopcorning. what's all this, then? )

As always, we're listing the characters up for autopopping a week in advance. If you see one of your characters on the list and do not concur with the autopopping, please comment to this post to say that you do not want the character autopopped. It's entirely possible we've missed something; we're more than happy to remove you from the autopopping list, just give us a shout :)

When the week is up, we will be removing all the popcorned characters from the community userlist as well as from the active roster. Their applications will remain linked on the popcorn plaque, and the characters will be open for unpopcorning. We are also removing the characters already on the popcorn plaque from the community userlist.

The following characters will be autopopped on Monday, Dec. 8, barring objection from their players. (Note: because we haven't done this in well over a year, the list is very long; when in doubt, use ctrl+f in your browser to search for your character's name!):

Characters Slated for Autopopcorning on Dec. 8, 2008 )

OOC community vs main community: a poll!

One final bit of upkeep. Regarding the OOC Community -- please read and vote! )

Roxas was eager to make some more friends around the castle and as he had some unneeded stress to attend to, he felt that hosting a Struggle Tournament in the Room of Requirement was a great idea. The blonde cheerily hung up posters advertising the match he planned on organizing. He was sure that no one here would know anything about Struggle so below each poster he hung a list of the Rules and Regulations of the game, leaving a space for passers by to sign up for the competition if they were interested.

The official struggle match will be held on Tuesday, May 6 in the Room of Requirement.
[identity profile] ugly-old-hat.livejournal.com
The format of the rules and community info page have been streamlined! This does not mean that any of the rules and policies have changed, it only means that we've removed a lot of the unnecessary and redundant information. We hope this makes things much more convenient for both our veteran players, our new players, and any future players. If you see any information that you feel is missing or should be clarified, please alert a mod and we'll get it taken care of as soon as we can.

It's the second anniversary of [livejournal.com profile] hogwarts_hocus! Confetti and cupcakes all around, and much love for all the players who have made this comm the bastion of cracky fun it is.

This year the HHversary is more lowkey. We do have a schoolwide RP up for those who'd like. The major thing we're announcing, though, is that we've acted on player suggestions to create an out-of-character community for plotting and other game-related communication:

[livejournal.com profile] h_h_ooc !

We've been reluctant to do this for a while, because we know OOC communities/forums can become serious wank generators in other games. Therefore we've devised some ground rules we want to keep clear from the outset. It's not that we anticipate problems. We're sure y'all can stay mellow and don't want to cause us headaches. But we want to make it clear exactly what this comm is for and what it isn't for. It is for coordinating plots, introducing yourself, posting fanworks, letting people know you're going on hiatus -- all that good stuff. It's not for fangirling or dissing one another or one another's characters/plots. We remain firmly committed to our policy of "don't like, don't read."

That having been said, we definitely see the need for a comm where people can communicate OOCly without having to e-mail around or delve into IRC. Some people don't have IRC access; others just aren't on IRC that often. We still love our IRC channel (and encourage you to join it -- #hogwarts_hocus on esper.net, baybee!) but man does not live by IRC alone.

So. Membership to the OOC comm is now officially open! You don't have to join it. You don't have to friend it. But if you want to, you can. It's where stuff like hiatus announcements and awesome pictures of Homsar will now go.

Happy anniversary, [livejournal.com profile] hogwarts_hocus! Happy anniversary to you! Also, happy unbirthday.
[identity profile] kahnooloo.livejournal.com
"And so," Albus finished firmly, "this problem absolutely must be addressed."

He had been aware of the problem for some time. It had remained to think of a diplomatic way to broach the subject to Kahnooloo.

The problem was this: In the early days of the Sorting Hat's new reign of terror, certain deserving students had been turned away unjustly ...  )

The headmistress and the shadow headmaster professor emeritus sent a list of the wrongly squibbed persons to the Sorting Hat, along with lots of bling to soften the request. And so it was that the roster underwent a very minor re-ordering, and the Hat acquired a gorgeous diamond hatpin.

(( OOC NOTE: This is a mechanism by which to enable the reapplication of canon characters who, in the early days of the game, were squibbed before it had been determined only OCs would be squibbed. Now those characters can be re-apped as playable.

Future applications of any kind would only be sorted into Qanonreip at the mods' discretion and only in extreme cases: for example, when a mun does not reply to any comments (abandoned applications), or when an app is so grossly out of character that even within a crack game it can't really be excused. PLEASE understand that this is not meant to be, and will not become, a system for adjudicating ICness. Nor will we field complaints that a given application should be / should have been sorted into Qanonreip. We will only sort into Qanonreip when it appears to the mod team as a whole to be the only course of action on a given application.))

Last call for the mod plot! We need to finalise who's being paired with whom. Let us know by 9 pm Eastern time, please, by commenting to the the announcement post.

The Hat's mass wedding insanity will be posted somewhere around 8 pm Eastern on Friday (that's tomorrow), give or take a bit. If it gets done a little earlier, we may post it a little earlier. If it takes a little later to do, we may post it a little later. (Hey, mapping out a tent village is serious business.)

That is all!
[identity profile] ugly-old-hat.livejournal.com
The Sorting Hat is on a family values kick.

In about a week -- on Friday, August 10, to be specific -- the Hat is going to hold what it claims is an awards banquet in the Great Hall. In reality, the event will be a mass wedding. Think the Reverend Moon. The Hat will ICly determine the couples to be wed, and while the marriage ceremony is taking place, house elves will be moving each of the newlyweds' belongings to a tent in a tent village the Hat has had set up on the grounds. These will be HPverse-style tents, of course, like the ones used at the Quidditch World Cup. The newlyweds will be required by the Hat to live together in the tent village until the Hat gets bored with the entire concept and performs a mass annulment -- a few weeks later.

These couples will not be enchanted to love one another. There will be no love potions or charms provided by the Hat. If you want to slip magical roofies into your honey's pumpkin juice, that's on you. What will be handled by the Hat are the pairings themselves and the domestic arrangements.

OOCly, the pairings can be determined by mutual agreement between muns, or can be chosen by the mods. If you want to make some or all of your characters available for marrying off, please comment here, and let the mods know that they're open to anyone we choose for them. (Conditions can also be determined, e.g., "Peter Petrelli is open to marriage with anyone except Sylar, because that's his nemesis, etc," but only in extraordinary circumstances, please, for our sanity's sake.) If you have already worked out a pairing with another mun, please let us know here -- both muns, please, so we know you really did agree on it. ;) Feel free to proposition one another in e-mail. The contact post is in the sidebar. You know how to use it.

Obviously, the idea here is crack. Going into this seeking to enable your pet pairing is not exactly in the spirit of the thing. We'll let you do it, but how boring! Also, be aware that the Hat will not split up previously married couples: for example, Noah and Sandra Bennet won't even be considered by the Hat. They're already a family as far as the Hat's concerned, so they don't need the Hat's meddling help. The Hat will, however, split up dating couples, even if they are engaged. For example, the Hat does not care that Camilla Macaulay has decided she will always be true to Henry Winter forever and ever. It will marry her off to whomever it darn well chooses.

Finally -- the Hat's idea of family is not exactly in line with the Moral Majority. Same-gender? Sure! Interspecies? The Hat is all up ons! What matters is that the Hat feels these two people are right for each other!

Comments are screened, so as to enhance the fun when the Hat reveals its sinister deed. The Hat will make known the entire list of pairings at the wedding ceremony itself, and the tents will be assigned (yes, there will be a map, so you will know who your neighbors are).

Any questions, e-mail the mods -- you know where to find us (contact post is in the sidebar, baby). Have at it!

Hello, hello. We've been getting questions on how Hogwarts Hocus will handle the release of the seventh and final book in the Potter series. So, here's the scoop.

First off, there are to be no spoilers in the comm, pls. To this end, the comm has been switched from open membership to moderated membership for the present, until the spate of spoilerific trolls across LiveJournal communities has died down. We'll switch it back eventually, fear not. For one thing, it's just a pain to have to manually approve everyone joining. (That being said, once membership has been approved, members can post freely -- posts from members aren't going to be languishing in a moderation queue.)

Second, there are to be no spoilers in OOC chat in our IRC channel, pls. To this end, we've opened a second channel for our members to discuss the book and things related to it (e.g., spoiler leaks that people have seen on the interwebs). That channel is also on esper.net, and is called #jengahorcrux.

Finally, with reference to actual gameplay: It has always been HH policy that HP characters are to be canon-compliant through book 6 (Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince). This can't and won't change. After discussion and thought, the mod team has determined that Hogwarts Hocus must be AU after the point of book 6. There simply is no way to accommodate book 7 canon without forcing massive retcons throughout the game. It would be too disruptive.

Therefore, book 7 canon that takes place before the end of HBP in terms of HPverse chronology is fair game, but book 7 canon that takes place after the end of HBP is not. Examples of what we mean (totally fictional, btw -- no spoilers here, though oh how beautiful it would be if they were HP canon):

1) Marauders backstory that could be given in book 7: Fair game for HHverse inclusion. Marauders backstory is something that occurred within the HPverse before the end of HBP, even though the backstory wasn't revealed until book 7.
2) Book 7 for some reason reveals that Dumbledore was born in a log cabin in the Wild West and is the half-brother of Wyatt Earp: Fair game for HHverse inclusion. Dumbledore's birth occured within the HPverse before the end of HBP, even though the backstory wasn't revealed until book 7.
3) Voldemort is defeated by Sirius and Homsar joining together to start "The Jeffersons," whereupon one-third of Planet Earth is enveloped in marshmallowy Homsar exudate, like the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man in Ghostbusters only on a much bigger scale: Not fair game for HHverse inclusion. This did not happen by the end of HBP. Even if we OOCly know it to have happened, we can't retcon HH to make it have happened here.
4) Harry genderswitches to become the Girl Who Lived, starts a free-love commune with the Weasley twins, and gives birth to triplets: Not fair game for HHverse inclusion, as this did not happen by the end of HBP.

While someone with IC book 7 knowledge showing up and being like 'WTF!' would enforce the idea that this Hogwarts is in some sort of parallel, cracked-out, dead-people-grabbing pocket dimension, it'd create a lot of problems for existing characters. And while that might not be a problem with most other fandoms represented here, this is the setting universe and it could be problematic if it happened.

This is certainly subject to fine-tuning, and as always, HP character applications are subject to mod approval, so we'd be talking to anyone apping an HP character anyway. So pls not to get all excited trying to think of random scenarios in which the issue could become a problem just yet. We'll handle things as they come up, and we're flexible. Questions are welcome to the mods in e-mail or in the suggestion post, with the understanding that we're all probably hunkering down reading HP7 and aren't likely to get back to you before the end of the weekend, yo. For that reason, comments are disabled on this post. ;)
[identity profile] kahnooloo.livejournal.com
We have a few announcements to make!

First of all, our dear co-mod Aayla is undergoing surgery, as she's already posted. Prima and Siri will be managing Hatness, the contact post, etc., during this time. Everyone send Aayla your strongest get-well vibes, and maybe some fan-art of Yoda!

Second, we'd like to raise awareness of the adoptions post. As you all know, HH has no posting quota. However, as we've said before, we strongly frown on character squatting. The only reason we can get by as a community without a posting quota is by virtue of the fact that HHers are not dicks. When a character is underplayed, and another player asks that character's player whether they'd mind handing over the character, almost invariably the first player is gracious and reasonable. We as a mod team appreciate your courtesy to one another, and your general nonsuckitude! The adoptions post makes it that much easier for people to offer up their underplayed characters. We thank those who've commented there, and want to encourage the rest of you to comment there as well, if you have a character you know you really don't have much of a muse for anymore but don't want to popcorn.

Finally ... there will be another Secrets Board this weekend! It will go up at 8 pm Eastern time this Friday, July 6. New players who weren't around for the first ones might want to have a look at the previous boards, to see what we're talking about -- just click the "secret" tag.

about the Secrets Board )

So, comment to this post to let us know whether your chars are open to having unhappy images made about them, and if so, which chars. (Note that even if a character is on the fair-game list, unhappy/negative secrets made about them must still follow game rules, e.g., no nonconsensual fourth-wall breakage.)
[identity profile] kahnooloo.livejournal.com
1. New mod!

Our beloved Cat ([livejournal.com profile] dinosaurman) is doing some cool stuff in RL that necessitates she step down her HH commitments. She will continue to RP with us as a player, but is stepping down from the mod team. Taking her place will be the fabulous Aayla ([livejournal.com profile] blue_ataru).

2. Keeping tabs on who's who

Aayla will be taking over maintenance of the contact post. Prima will continue to maintain the roster and the popcorn plaque, and Siri will continue to maintain the suggestion box. All these resources are linked in the sidebar. Please take a moment to look over the contact post and roster, and make sure all your characters are listed where they ought to be. Things do slip through the cracks! If something's not where it should be in the roster, e-mail Prima a heads-up. If a character's missing or misidentified in the contact post, comment as a comment to your pre-existing thread in the contact post, if you already have one. If you don't have one already, please do post a comment with your contact info to the contact post, so that other muns who want to app characters from your char's canon will know where to reach you.

That's it for now, party peoples in the place to be! Keep the crack coming!

We're making a couple of changes.

First: the character limit is being upped. You may now hold up to 15 characters, of which up to 3 may be from a single fandom. (Formerly our limit was 10 characters per mun, and a fandom limit of 2.)

Second: We've noted that people have been informally offering underplayed characters for adoption. We think this is a good thing, and would like to make it easier. Herewith, the debut of the adoptions post. This goes hand in hand with the raising of the character limit: we're allowing more leeway for people to accumulate characters because we know that it often smarts to popcorn them entirely, but also, we're encouraging you to offer up characters you don't play much.

The adoptions post is permanently linked in the sidebar.

Last but not least: We're undertaking another round of autopopcornings. This one will take us up through June 1, 2006. The same rules apply as applied to the first round of autopoppings. As before, we're listing the characters up for autopopping a week in advance. If you see one of your characters up there and do not concur with the autopopping, please comment to this post AND e-mail Kahnooloo (kahnooloo[at]gmail[dot]com) and the three mods to say that you do not want the character autopopped. For one thing, we're mere mortals, and for another, we don't tag Sortings by characters participated, so it's entirely possible we've missed something; we're more than happy to remove you from the list, just give us a shout :)

The following characters will be autopopped on Tuesday, May 8, barring objection from their players:

Bonjour, mes amis. Ceci n'est pas un chapeau. In this edition of As the Hat Turns, we bring you a couple tidbits of information.

First off, the roster is full to bursting. We are continuing to Sort applications as usual. When the first round of autopoppings takes effect on Monday the 19th, we will add this week's sorted applicants to the roster. Don't be alarmed if you're a new player and your character isn't on the roster until then -- you are still welcome to begin RPing outside the Sorting Room as soon as the Hat renders its verdict on your placement. For any questions on the roster specifically, contact Prima, who maintains the roster. Other questions on autopopping can be directed to the mod team as a whole, either via e-mail or by leaving a comment at the post that discussed the upcoming round of autopopping.

Second, we're about to revamp the tag system in HH. Our initial policy, established by Damien, was to make the character's tag their first name. Since then, we've grown a fair bit, and have had to resort to first + last names for many characters. Damien, who has not only stayed on as a player and in our hearts but continues to act as technical consultant or "tech mod" for the comm, now has the capability of changing tags retroactively en masse; therefore it is now possible for us to change the tags, as it had not been practical to do before. (Be assured that this will not break your tags. Prima has offered up Stephen as a test case. His tag is now "stephen maturin". This tag has been used 310 times. Hell will freeze over before any of us go to change a tag manually 310 times!)

Starting next week, Damien will begin to change the tags. Your character's tag will be the character's first and last name, unless the character does not have a first and last name. Examples:

Special Agent Dale Cooper, whose tag was "dale", will now have the tag "dale cooper".
Constable Benton Fraser, whose tag was "fraser" (but really should have been "benton" -- sorry, Damien), will now have the tag "benton fraser".
Detective Lieutenant Provenza, who has no first name specified in canon, will still have the tag "provenza".
Captain Jack Harkness, whose status as one of many Jacks in HH has made him a pioneer of the system now to be adopted, will still have the tag "jack harkness".
Digger, whose name is, well, Digger, will still have the tag "digger".

Damien would like to make clear that there will be no special exceptions. The point is to make this system as uniform and clear as possible. So, no matter how strongly Strong Bad's mun may wish Strong Bad to have the tag "dangeresque" to reflect his alternate identity as the super agent Dangeresque (who fights the law, but he also fights the crime but not as much), that's too darn bad. ;) Strong Bad's tag will just have to be "strong bad."

A moment of silence as we mourn the fact Lily Potter's tag will not be "sugarbob."

Any questions on the tag changes should be directed to Damien.

The mods want your input! Please take the poll using one of your character journals -- only one, please -- and if you've got a mind to, leave a comment for us. Comments are screened so as to keep things under our collective hat. (Haha, it is a pun or play on words)
