((Okay, the party will be divided into two parts, one taking place before midnight, and one after the Halloween spell is starting to work. This is the first part, obviously. The other will be posted immediately afterwards but takes place roughly five hours later or so, in game time. Remember, this post is for partying only, and no people-turning-into-their-costumes crack!))

ASK NOT FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS, IT TOLLS FOR THEE

Jack watched the words that were magically carved above the door to the Great Hall, in plain view of everyone entering it, and he smiled secretively. Everything was set. Tonight was going to be interesting. Who would have known magic could prove to be so useful? He made a mental note to investigate this even more for next year. Now that Sally was here, he'd be able to discuss it with her at great length. She always had such lovely ideas.

Since Jack was not exactly a beginner in the scaring people business he had carefully checked out the atmosphere of Hogwarts and gotten a distinct impression of what was considered frightening here. Outside the Great Hall the lights were out and shadows lurked in the corners. At irregular intervals (but always when one was least expecting it) the mad cackle of a deranged evil clown echoed through the Entrance Hall. Small cats black as midnight stroke around the walls, not speaking to anyone but constantly smiling evilly at anyone passing them, showing gleaming, pointed teeth. Also, because Jack never had it in him to resist the absolute classics, bats were hanging upside-down near the ceiling.

Inside the Great Hall, it was less dark and spooky, but still obviously Halloween. Cool white mist was trickling along the floor. Jack-o’-lanterns hovered in the air around an area cleared for dancing. Along one wall stood a large table with various Halloween treats: pumpkin pie, candy corn, toffee apples, hot cider, mini-cakes and a large bowl of punch.

The Halloween party could begin.

Daniel couldn't help but stare. He'd always thought Janet beautiful, but...wow. Hoping his eyes weren't bugging out of his head, he made his way over to her, bearing two glasses of punch.

"Hi," he said, doing his best not to stare at her cleavage--and succeeding, for the most part. "I...I like it. I really like it."

"Hey. You're not looking so bad yourself." She smiled as she took the glass. "Have you worn that before? It looks sort of familiar."

"This?" He glanced down at his outfit. "I picked it up when we all got sent back to 1969. Figured I'd hang on to it, just in case I ever needed a costume." He'd eventually gotten the pot smell out--their drivers hadn't exactly been sober.

"Ah. That would explain it. It's an interesting look for you." She smirked. "I think it needs more beads, though."

"Too many strings of beads and I'd probably strangle myself," he laughed. "Now, is that something you've had hanging around, or did the house elves get it for you?" If they had, he owed them a very, very big favor.

"It was the house elves. It was the first thing I could think of, and I have no idea why." She shook her head. "It was either this or just wear some scrubs, but the point of Halloween is to be something else, isn't it?"

"I...well, you've made a good job of it," he said, hoping it wasn't obvious that his eyes were almost falling out of his head. "I mean, I don't often see you in civilian clothes, let alone a costume, and..." Yeah, Daniel, that's it. Babble. Because a babbling geek is oh-so-shmexy.

"Thanks," she said, brightening up a bit. Sure, she looked ridiculous, but at least Daniel thought she looked good. "The civilian clothes might be a regular thing now, but I don't think this is going to be. I'm a doctor, not a cowgirl. Now you, on the other hand..."

"If you say I'm a hippie, I swear I'll...I'll poke you," he said, grinning. "The patchouli would make me sneeze." He didn't at all mind the thought of Janet in civilian clothes...particularly the dress she'd worn on their date.

"I'm kidding," she laughed. "It looks good on you, but I hate patchouli."

He was slightly horrified to find himself blushing. "You...really? I thought I looked pretty stupid, but at least everyone else looked stupid with me." Particularly Jack, in his biker togs...if only he'd had a camera at the time.

"If you were wearing some hideous tie-dyed thing, that'd be one thing. This isn't that bad."

He laughed. "You should've seen Teal'c's headband," he said. "That was...interesting." Had it been anyone but Teal'c, it would have been ridiculous, and even as it was...well.

"I wish I could have seen that," she laughed. "Hippie Teal'c."

She nodded towards the food table. "So, is it safe to drink the punch or did somebody spike it? I don't want to end the night screeching karaoke again."
