((Okay, the party will be divided into two parts, one taking place before midnight, and one after the Halloween spell is starting to work. This is the first part, obviously. The other will be posted immediately afterwards but takes place roughly five hours later or so, in game time. Remember, this post is for partying only, and no people-turning-into-their-costumes crack!))

ASK NOT FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS, IT TOLLS FOR THEE

Jack watched the words that were magically carved above the door to the Great Hall, in plain view of everyone entering it, and he smiled secretively. Everything was set. Tonight was going to be interesting. Who would have known magic could prove to be so useful? He made a mental note to investigate this even more for next year. Now that Sally was here, he'd be able to discuss it with her at great length. She always had such lovely ideas.

Since Jack was not exactly a beginner in the scaring people business he had carefully checked out the atmosphere of Hogwarts and gotten a distinct impression of what was considered frightening here. Outside the Great Hall the lights were out and shadows lurked in the corners. At irregular intervals (but always when one was least expecting it) the mad cackle of a deranged evil clown echoed through the Entrance Hall. Small cats black as midnight stroke around the walls, not speaking to anyone but constantly smiling evilly at anyone passing them, showing gleaming, pointed teeth. Also, because Jack never had it in him to resist the absolute classics, bats were hanging upside-down near the ceiling.

Inside the Great Hall, it was less dark and spooky, but still obviously Halloween. Cool white mist was trickling along the floor. Jack-o’-lanterns hovered in the air around an area cleared for dancing. Along one wall stood a large table with various Halloween treats: pumpkin pie, candy corn, toffee apples, hot cider, mini-cakes and a large bowl of punch.

The Halloween party could begin.

Molly beamed, immensely pleased. "I thought you might like it," she said, running a hand over the unfamiliar skirt. "I couldn't find anything from your era specifically, but I thought it was nice anyway." Somewhat self-consciously she adjusted her hat. "Is that your dress uniform? I have to say, the effect is...nice. Very, very nice." Which was Molly-speak for, Damn he's hot.

"Not that you don't look beautiful anyway," Jack said hastily, "but it does suit you very well." In fact, Molly's outfit was fairly dissimilar from the simple gowns of Jack's time, but it did bear some resemblance to 18th-century clothing, and so did not look entirely foreign to him. Certainly far less foreign than T-shirts and jeans, anyway or leather bikinis.

"This is my full-dress uniform. I wear it for admirals and suchlike. My undress uniform is for everyday - I wore it at Potions class." He refrained from mentioning that it was still permanently ink-stained from Molly's little mishap during that class. "You see that my sword goes with it, so we are well-protected from vampires and things." He patted the hilt of his sword and grinned.

She laughed. "I'm glad fashions have changed," she said. "I can't imagine wearing a corset every day...no wonder women broke ribs when they sneezed." She had no idea if that macabre bit of trivia were true or not, but it sounded gruesome either way. "That, and my sword didn't match, so I had to leave it off. I did consider wearing my Kendra costume, but it's a bit cold for that." The Kendra costume definitely hadn't been made with Scottish autumns in mind.

"Ah, in my day stays are not so confining. They are more like... what did you call that thing? A bra. But I reckon women started wearing the confining ones again, which seems damned silly to me, but there is no reasoning with fashion." Jack then innocently asked the inevitable question. "Pray, what is your Kendra costume?"

"I can't imagine why they'd go back to these things, once they'd seen something like a bra," she said, doing some surreptitious adjusting. "Though some of the stuff people wore even in the twentieth century was pretty damn ridiculous."

She tipped him a wink, adding more quietly, "The Kendra costume I'll have to show you some other time. I have several I really think you'd like."

"Indeed, though those blue trousers are a capital invention," Jack remarked. He got the impression that the Kendra costume was rather... scanty, and added, "I should like to see that costume. And I know stays can be damned difficult to manage, so if you need any help getting them off, I would be glad to help. And I promise not to damage them this time." He smiled slyly.

Molly arched an eyebrow. "Are you propositioning me, Captain Aubrey?" she asked with a grin. "Actually, I may really need your help--I can't imagine how women without maids or sisters managed to deal with these."
