Starting at five o’clock, Slartibartfast ambled around to each of the common rooms, pasting instructions for the tour onto each board. He’d realized he’d neglected to specify a meeting place, so, in addition to strongly advising good coats and sturdy shoes, he let everyone know that they were to meet in the Great Hall at six.
He killed the remaining hour by hunting for lint and examining the stones that made up the school building--whoever had been making granite in this area had done a bang-up job of it. He might not know a great deal about Earthman society, but he did know good craftsmanship, and whoever had been in charge of this part of the world had clearly known what they were doing.
Come six o’clock he wandered down to the Great Hall, a small red square on a gold chain dangling from his fingers.
“All, all, all right, if everyone, ah, could kindly hop into the car--” he indicated an aircar that looked suspiciously like a minibus, hovering several feet above the floor “--and, and, and buckle up, we can, ah, we can be, well, we can be off.”

Date: 2006-10-04 01:06 am (UTC)The stick shift now shifted, the last thing the bus needed was the Improbability Drive's coordinates. Laying the small cube carefully in the square on the dashboard, Slartibartfast made sure all the doors and windows were firmly shut, and brought his palm down on the button that would activate the Drive.
The bus contorted, flashing through a variety of bizarre shapes (a pear, a high-heeled shoe, an extremely bad toupee) and finally snapped back to its proper form, just above the snowy surface of Magrathea.
"All right, ah, everyone, everyone out," he said, opening the doors. "The factory, ah, the factory's just this way."

"Oh dear, I'm dreadfully sorry about that," she murmured, to no one in particular. Christine managed, after several minutes of awkward blushing, to look up and regain some of her composure. "Which way, Monsieur Slartibartfast?"

42! crowed her brain.
She gave her head a good shake.

Date: 2006-10-04 02:40 am (UTC)"I say," he said, buttoning up his peacoat securely as he followed Slartibartfast across the frozen landscape, "are we on another planet now? How remarkable!" Indeed, it was so remarkable that he had almost failed to notice the comely charms of the young lady in the white dress. (I said almost.)

Date: 2006-10-04 02:48 am (UTC)The outer bit of the factory was much like anything on Earth--glass cases filled with models of planets, racks of printed pamphlets, etc. The only oddity was the large cart, rather like a mining cart, fenced with bright yellow mesh.
He opened the door and gestured everybody inside--it was a bit of a squeeze, but not terribly so, and certainly nobody’s view would be blocked.
“All right,” he said, shifting a lever and pressing several buttons. “Hang on.”
The cart slid jerkily on its track, creeping slowly until it reached a long, red-lit tunnel. Without warning it shot forward, zooming along at an alarming pace.
“I should warn you,” he shouted, much as he had to Arthur, “We’re going to pass through a sort of gate-thing--it may frighten you. It certainly scares the bollocks out of me.”
The tunnel zipped by at blurring speed, the car careening toward what were to all appearances a pair of firmly closed doors.

Date: 2006-10-04 04:07 am (UTC)Hanging onto the rail, she peered forward and then promptly shut her eyes. "Merlin, please tell me that we're not heading straight for a set of doors." Turning, she buried her face in Perry's chest. "Just tell me when it's over." Never having been on a roller coaster, Lily nonetheless now knew what her reaction would be. Trying not to scream or squeal or do anything but close her eyes tightly, Lily felt her stomach bottom out at the speed they were traveling.

The whole jerking, speeding thing is giving her flashbacks to the Yukari-mobile. She manages a miserable squeaking noise and feels very glad that she didn't have any breakfast this morning. At least there aren't any pedestrians to swerve around and nearly hit.

These gates were always rather unpleasant. Luckily he'd had a couple drinks to cushion his system and there was a packet of peanuts in his satchel.

Date: 2006-10-04 04:50 am (UTC)They shot out through the doors, floor and walls and ceiling dropping away around them, until they were zipping smoothly through an almost perfect replica of space (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b375/StevieBarry/PDVD_000.jpg). The factory was, as Slartibartfast had told Arthur, much bigger on the inside than it was on the outside, and though the ‘floor’ itself was littered with planets half-completed, it was nothing like crowded.
“Welcome to Hyperspace Engineering,” he said, as the roar of the tunnel gave way to smooth quiet. “If you, if you, you know, if you look over there (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b375/StevieBarry/PDVD_003.jpg) you’ll see the, the latest project--damned owners have called it, called it Loudonaria, of all stupid things.” The fact that his own name was far more ridiculous was not lost on Slartibartfast--there was a reason he was so reluctant to tell anyone what it was.

Date: 2006-10-04 06:57 pm (UTC)"I, I think this one would be, you know, a good one to visit," Slartibartfast said, as they came up to a section of yellow girder that led straight down (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b375/StevieBarry/PDVD_004.jpg). "I, I, well, we're in for a bit of a drop, but it won't, you know, won't last long." And with that not entirely reassuring warning he snapped a red lever to the left, and down they went. Quite fast.

Date: 2006-10-04 07:59 pm (UTC)It also appeared that they were falling straight down. Christine tried to keep herself from screaming (after a lifetime of vocal training, her screams tended to be a. very loud, b. very high, and c. very likely to shatter glass) and was very successful in the endeavor, as she fainted.

Far, far above a worker in an orange jumpsuit could be seen dumping water into the ocean, which looked like it still had a fair way to go. “Um, that is, could one of you, you know, you doctors, ah, help her?” he asked, adjusting his hold on Christine’s inert form. While he’d heard of people fainting, he’d never actually witnessed it, and didn’t have a clue what to do about it. “I, I do hope she hasn’t, ah, hasn’t been hurt.”

"When people faint, aren't you supposed to hold something smelly under their nose so they'll wake up?" She starts looking around. "Someone take off a sock."
