((Vimes's writing is slightly small and tight and a bit untidy. He can rumple a helmet, he can rumple his own handwriting. The paper itself is good even if slightly printed with ink))
Miss Sto Helit --
As it appears I am now Sorted, we should have the opportunity to have a chat. As you know this place better than I, perhaps you might suggest a place.
Cmdr. Sir Samuel Vimes
Duke of Ankh-Morpork
Captain Aubrey --
It seems I've been Sorted into your House after all. I wonder if you might show me around, let me know whatever it is I need to know?
Afterward we can enjoy a chat. Maybe it is time for me to take a vacation after all.
Cmdr. Sir Samuel Vimes
Duke of Ankh-Morpork
Commodore Norrington --
Well, I'm out of the Sorting Room at last. I thought we might get together for more of a chat, perhaps put together a plan of action as it were. I know we can't do more than sit and wait, but we might make some plans in that regard.
Or, for that matter, we could merely chat to the other sane person at this school over our relaxant of choice. I'll bring my cigar case.

Date: 2006-08-02 06:07 am (UTC)In regards to your idea to meet:
Strategising would seem to be a wise thing to do
especially since the matter of Sparrow never is far from the front of my mind in this place, and planning ahead carefully would be a far better way of resolving the issue than rash actions. I believe yours is an excellent idea.Conversation without business behind it would also be worthwhile; I would certainly enjoy talking with you in a context that does not involve the criminals we currently pursue
because sanity seems far too undervalued in this school, and without other rational people to talk with I do not doubt that I will inevitably find myself joining in their madness.Do you have any suggestion for a place to meet, and a time?
Sincerely,
Commodore James Norrington

Date: 2006-08-02 06:23 am (UTC)Commodore Norrington,
I think either manner of conversation is at least acceptable. I've been advised to make this 'mission' of mine at least partly a holiday, and since at the very least my quarry can't actually kill anyone while he's here, I have some leeway in time.
I tend to keep odd hours. When are you awake? Late evening would be ideal for me -- past dinner, perhaps, and someplace private. I have yet to explore this castle thoroughly, so I'm not certain of a good place yet.
At least it's not a sodding great mountain range or something. I can deal with roofs and staircases and interminable bloody hallways. Are there conference rooms? Empty offices? Old classrooms? And is there any way to send a message that doesn't involve livestock?

Date: 2006-08-02 01:42 pm (UTC)While the criminal I pursue is apparently free to commit whatever minor crimes he so desires, I doubt he will risk anything that could lead to his expulsion soon; if your criminal is at all intelligent, I assume we shall both have sufficient waiting time
I would be capable of being awake at any time; I don't go to sleep on a strict schedule. Late evening would suit me perfectly.
Theoretically, there would have to be. This is a large place and I doubt all its rooms could be in constant use.
I heard tell of a method called "Floo"; however, it seems to involve transport through fireplaces and I imagine it isn't pleasant to make any sort of mistake with that either. If the magic here is at all useful, though, I am sure there is a spell of some sort that would serve the purpose. Perhaps the library would be of help.
Respectfully yours,

Date: 2006-08-02 02:17 pm (UTC)I am of more or less the same mind. My quarry is known for obeying the letter if not the spirit of the law (unless he thinks he won't get caught), so he might not be of any immediate trouble.
I have taken a look around and found a disused office in one of the towers that should suit just fine. I will be up there after dinner tonight and check out the library sometime later.

Date: 2006-08-02 09:19 pm (UTC)These issues, of course, can be discussed when we meet up, as I doubt either man will leave the premises or break the rules within the day.
That sounds ideal. I shall meet you there after dinner, then.
Respectfully,

Date: 2006-08-02 01:03 pm (UTC)Congratulations on your Sorting; I'm glad to hear it went well.
There's a quiet area down by the greenhouses that affords privacy. My schedule is flexible, and I can meet you at your convenience.
Sincerely,

Date: 2006-08-02 02:17 pm (UTC)I can't rightly say I know everything there is to know, as I was locked in a magic water closet (http://community.livejournal.com/hogwarts_hocus/727169.html) for three months after my Sorting, but I shall certainly do my best. (I think it goes without saying that magic can be awful useful, but it can also be a damned nuisance. I swear I was only in that head for ten minutes.)
At any rate, I can show you round
GriffGryffindor Tower, and introduce you to Pete the house elf, who's been a great help. We can meet up in the common room any time you like.Yours etc.,
