Admiral:
The star map is really, really beautiful and it'll have a place of honor in my rooms. I'm thinking that I'd like to put it on the ceiling so I can look at it at night. All of the hard work you put into it really shows. And it's cool that the areas of influence of the species you know is marked out too!
I value our friendship very much. In return for the star map, I'm enclosing for you a book that you might find interesting. Please find enclosed The unabridged Grey's Anatomy, -the- anatomical reference for the human body. Pretty much standard issue for doctors and others who really need to understand the human body in detail. I think you'll find it very enlightening!
Talk to you soon,
Dib
P.S. Let me know if Rigel delivers this letter correctly. I am working on training him to carry small packages and letters for me as my owl is a little too weak for carrying books. He likes to be scratched behind the ears.
John,
Since our last conversation I've had an opportunity to visit a used bookstore, and I thought you might be interested in the two volumes I'm enclosing. It's entirely up to you as to whether you should like to read them, but I thought that you had the right to see them, at any rate.
Please find enclosed a copy of what is considered your definitive biography, "John Adams" by David McCullough, and a scholarly edition of the collected letters of John and Abigail Adams. We preserved nearly 1000 of these exchanges and they were... invaluable to our understanding of the American Revolution.
Respectfully,
Dib, Gryffindor
P.s. I hope Rigel (my devinesian devil) delivers this letter and package in good condition. I am working on training him to carry small items for me, as my owl is sick at the moment. He likes to be scratched behind the ears, and is a mild and kind animal.
((OOC: last time we discussed this this sort of thing was OK with you. If it's not, please nudge me and I'll be happy to amend or delete this!))

Date: 2006-08-01 04:32 pm (UTC)I must thank you quite sincerely for the books. It was most kind of you to think of me.
I confess that I find myself slightly embarrassed. Those letters were never intended for anyone else to see and some contain material of a certain nature that my dearest friend would be horrified to discover that anyone else had read. And yet, I cannot find it in myself to be upset. You have given me an amazing gift, sir, the power to hear from my wife again, and I shall be forever in your debt. For this as well as your other kindnesses.
Know, sir, that I am your most obedient servant,
J. Adams
PS - Your Rigel is a good, if odd, creature. He delivered your package with care and I scratched him as instructed.

Date: 2006-08-01 08:53 pm (UTC)Jefferson burned his letters. But if you had done the same, history would have been much poorer for it.
And then it really would have been "Washington, Franklin and the Horse."I can't -imagine- all the feelings and thoughts you must be experiencing right now, but I'm always willing to talk, listen, and advise in any way that I can. I'm currently researching some other projects and if you want, I can add 'finding a way to send you home' to the list...? There's so much still to be done, and I sort of wonder if I've done a greater right or wrong by telling you what comes around the bend.
Respectfully,
Dib

Date: 2006-08-02 04:56 pm (UTC)I sincerely appreciate the sentiment. Should I have need of a kindly ear, you will be the first I turn to. As for the other, I can only say that we do what we must do and leave the rest to Divine Providence. Please accept my thanks and know that I am
Your servant,
J. Adams
