John woke up on a train, confused. He had intended to get off somewhere else entirely, he was sure. He'd been on his way to the retirement ceremony of an old friend of his from the marines. He'd never liked traveling by train very much -- he much preferred flying, or driving a car, which might be mundane, but at least he was at the wheel. But buses and trains -- they were the worst. And so he'd fallen asleep, leaning against the window, his small case of luggage under his seat.

And now he was... Where the hell was he?

The train was empty, and so was the station it was stopped at. It seemed to be located outside of a gigantically impressive castle, which was surrounded by green hills.

John squinted warily as he approached the building. A few youngsters in black robes ran past him near the entrance and he scowled. Nevertheless, he persevered and went in through the front entrance, cautiously looking around for someone who might be able to explain to him where he was and how he could get back where he needed to be.

After a short time of wandering the halls, he came to a large room where he came upon a questionnaire... Having nothing better to do, he decided to fill it out.

ExpandHuh. What's this all about? )

The first thing that Jonathan Teatime realised was that he was alive. This rather pleased him; it was the sort of thing one ought to notice.

The second thing that he noticed was that he was in a room that was almost certainly not located with in Ankh-Morpork. It was possible, of course; but the style of furniture, the hew, shade and even type of stone, and the definite sense of some odd, unfamiliar magic - not Disc magic - added together to make it quite likely that this was somewhere else entirely.

At any rate, it was somewhere Teatime could safely say he had never seen before in his life.

How he'd managed to find himself here was another matter. He'd had a brief glimpse of what it was to be dead, enough to make him fairly sure that he had returned to life. Again. But he had to admit this, too, might not be the case; actually BEING dead was a subject he had never delved too deeply into. Perhaps there were degrees of deadness. It was possible he was still -slightly- deceased, but not quite deceased enough to be a zombie.

And there was another possibility, of course. If he hadn't died the first time, and he hadn't died now...

Teatime grinned his huge, unhinged Jack O'Lantern grin and bounced down out of the room he was in. Wherever he was, he was sure he'd have LOTS of fun.

Richard Papen - The Secret History, by Donna Tartt

We are ruled by the more powerful,
so that we must obey in these things
and in things even more stinging.
I, therefore, will ask those below for pardon,
since I am forced to this,
and will obey those who have come to authority.
It is foolish to do what is fruitless.

- Ismene, from Antigone, by Sophocles

Once again, I have virtually dropped from the face of Hogwarts.

Abby's been studying, Jordan got called back to Sacred Heart for board things, Amy's plotting against Dr. Zoidberg for his anti-cute comments, and Tweek has been building a Rube Goldbergesque device in his room to capture the underpants gnomes.

My laptop's in the shop...and I don't know how much I'll be around for at least a week (not like i've been contributing lately anyway!  However, if anyone still wants to plot, I check email at least once a day, I miss you guys, and I want to play/app more characters....

Bye!
