I'm sure you've noticed that your gung-ho boy Jack is on the premises. You might want to let him know he just doesn't have the talent to be a sexual predator; I'd never be able to let him down easy.

"What good is a cunning plan without anyone to admire it?" He spread his arms wide. "And really, Doctor, yours is the only opinion that truly counts."

He looked darkly amused and folded his arms, a deliberate counter. "I thought it was my pain that mattered to you, or guilt, not my opinion."

"All of the above, naturally. I rarely do anything for just one reason." He leaned back against the wall, lacing his fingers behind his head. "It's how I get so much done."

"And that was always part of the game, to sort through all of it to find out what you were really after," he answered. He hadissed those old days, at least a little.

"It was always fun making you run about." He looked a touch wistful himself. "All those lovely little puzzles."

His smile was faint, "The chase was half the fun."

The Doctor cocked his head and stepped closer. He caught the Master's chin between his thumb and forefinger, examining the bruise.

"Souvenir from Jack?"

"To go with the happy memories," he agreed, going very still at the touch. He eyed the Doctor with guarded amusement.

His thumb swept over the mark, a faint touch. "That right cross of his. Hurts like hell."

The corners of his mouth twitched and he dropped his hand. "You shouldn't have baited him like that. Torture a man for a year and he's bound to be a little excitable."

"Oh, but I just had to tie up one little loose end. I never got to see the look on his face, you see, while your successor was so busy grieving at me." He smirked impishly. "I had to fix that. And his gun didn't work."

"Always with the last word," he murmured. "I'm sure he settled things with Jack."

The Doctor blinked. "His gun? You were shot once, you wanted to see if you could go for twice?" His voice raised the barest fraction.

"Why, is that concern in your voice?" The Master laughed, and gave the Doctor an openly speculative glance. "You didn't used to fret so."

"You never used to give me cause for such concern," he countered.

"Oh, I got up to plenty. You were just more cavalier about it. Downright cold at times," he pouted.

He sketched a shrug, "Mm. There were times you didn't give me much choice - even if I was concerned for you."

"I'm not one of your pets to be sheltered, Doctor," he said with a faint edge under his amused tone. "I take precautions."

"The last thing you ever wanted was sheltering, especially by me. You've always been more than able to take care of yourself without me around to muck things up."

"Oh, it's not the having you around that mucks things up," he pointed out. "It's the interfering. You never do quite get into the spirit of the thing."

"I show up, I start interfering. It's just my way," he said with a half-smile.

"Yes, it is. All that curiosity... and, really, watching you work is almost always worth the trouble you cause me."

The Doctor chuckled at that. "I'm pleased you approved."

"I did say I needed an audience, after all." His smirk became something closer to a leer. "And there's no one else who'd be able to properly appreciate my abilities."

"I've no problem being your audience, but if you think I'm going to stand being put in a birdcage, you're mad," he said, returning the smirk.

"Oh, but it suited you so well. Not the whole wizened little homunculus bit obviously, but having you like that." His eyes glimmered, eager and rapt. "So contained. Entirely at my pleasure. Can you blame me for looking back on it with fondness?"

The Doctor almost, almost managed to control his traitorous body's reaction to the Master's eagerness. How many times had he had that exact kinky little fantasy over the lifetimes? Far too many to count anymore.

A flush of color stained his cheeks.

"No," he finally said.

He'd been watching for a reaction, but this was more gratifying than he'd hoped. With a knowing smile, he locked eyes with the Doctor.
