Strange.
Duncan Idaho, Mentat, Swordmaster of Ginaz, protector of the Atreides line and ghola number.. 489 (give or take a few, it was hard to keep track after so long) AND the ultimate Kwisatz Haderach (ftw!), stood in the sorting room. He wasn’t easily confused, but he could find no recollection of such a room across the vastness of his memories. Where was he? Was this some trick of Erasmus? A final strike against humanity?
It had just been revealed that he was in fact the ultimate Kwisatz Haderach, and had merged with the flowmetal skin of the robot Erasmus in order to bring humanity to it’s next pinnacle.
Or something like that.
State your name.
He blinked, running his fingers through his wiry dark hair, a habit from ghola 470. “Duncan Idaho. I was also called Hayt, but that was.. before.”
The Mentat part of his mind scanned the document and was stymied by the strange and illogical nature of the questions. “I.. cheese? I’m not sure what that has to do with anything, but there was a soft white cheese I enjoyed on Caladan. Went well with pundi rice wine.”
- Who would you kill first, Barney or Carrottop?
His brow furrowed. “Barney,” he answered without hesitation. Ghola 312 had an irrational fear of purple incorporated into his makeup by the Tlieaxu. He wasn’t sure why.
- What time is it where you are?
“The end of the war,” he said. “The fifteen thousand year conflict against the thinking machines had come to a close. Or seven thirty.”
- If you were Albus Dumbledore returned from the dead, which member of the Order of the Phoenix would you sexually harass? How would you harass them? If you are Albus Dumbledore, please answer as if you were Sirius Black.
Duncan grinned wickedly, “I would take only what was offered,” he answered, recalling Hayt’s reply to a flustered Alia.
- If you are pushing to be in:
- Slytherin - please state the clever, witty name of the bar in which you bartend, in the dark.
“The No-Ship Lollipop,” he stated. It wasn’t particularly clever, but the title amused him.
- Gryffindor – Debate whether Harry should ultimately end up married to Fred or George. Use examples from a variety of world mythologies to bolster your argument.
Duncan shook his head. “Questions of breeding and marriage are better left to the Bene Gesserit.. or others who are more interested in focusing particular genetic lines. I have no interest in them.” Never mind that he was a tad defensive because his previous gholas had been used as part of Leto II’s breeding program. Nope.
- Ravenclaw – You guys are supposed to be smart. Explain why my desk is inundated with paperwork at all times, even though I’m constantly disposing of it.
The Mentat frowned, “It is a universal constant. The paperwork will always outpace your work and your desk will always remain over capacity. Destroy your desk and the paperwork will follow.”
- Hufflepuff – Prove you are not useless.
“I am Duncan Idaho. I am a Ginaz trained Swordmaster for House Atreides, a Mentat, and the ultimate Kwisatz Haderach. I am far from useless. So there."

Date: 2010-01-17 06:44 am (UTC)"Yeah," she said, shrugging. "It's kind of complicated. Went to Limbo, got part of my soul ripped out and replaced with dark magic, and then the person who took it taught me to teleport. But you can learn it here without all of that! I like it better, actually. It's a lot less painful and scary. You just wave a wand and bam! You can make stuff float or make water appear out of nowhere or turn a ball of paper into a mouse."

Date: 2010-01-18 11:08 pm (UTC)No. He would not dwell on such things.
"Is there a reason we are here to learn such magic? Who is in control?"

Date: 2010-01-19 04:07 pm (UTC)Naturally his first thoughts ran towards matters of honor and vendetta when it came to disagreements. After all, it's what he lived and breathed. In a few of his lives anyway.

Date: 2010-01-19 10:19 pm (UTC)She smiled brightly again. "So you're all about nobility, then? And protecting? Because if you are, I think I know where you should go while you're here. Oh, speaking of being here and not being here, sometimes people turn into popcorn here, like, big kernels of it." She held her arms out to demonstrate. "It's weird. But it's not like being dead, not really. At least, that's what I've heard."

Date: 2010-01-22 12:01 am (UTC)The Mentat frowned, flowmetal rippling acrossing his skin for an instant. "They become popcorn?"

Date: 2010-01-22 01:05 am (UTC)She beamed. "See, that's what I thought."
Megan nodded emphatically. "Oh yeah, all the time. And they come back, and it's all buttery and salty and gross, and sometimes they don't remember things but sometimes they do. I don't really know why. And I don't get why it's popcorn, either, instead of some other snack food. And why snack foods, really, I--" Stop, breathe, realize that other people liked talking, too. "Sorry," she said, giggling and a little embarassed. "I talk a lot. Just tell me to shut up if it's too much, it's okay. Really. By the way, what's up with your skin? Not that I think it's weird or anything! I have a friend who's made of rock and another one who's a lizard and another one of mercury, so I'm used to that sort of thing. I'm just curious. Is it part of being the quiz-thingy?"

Date: 2010-01-22 02:00 am (UTC)Glancing down at his hands, Duncan shook his head. "It is.. a facet of it. In my universe, the humans were at war with thinking machines. For thousands of generations, humanity was enslaved by the Overmind. Until the Butlerian Jihad against them. But the Overmind was not utterly crushed, it simply fled known space. I merged with one of the sentient robots to finally end the war. His flowmetal skin merged over my own as part of that merging."

Date: 2010-01-25 03:04 am (UTC)"Erasmus, the sentient one I merged with, lives in my Other Memories. They are the voices of all of my previous lives, going back nearly a thousand years. So.. yes and no. And no, his fascination with humans is of an academic vein." He hadn't exactly argued when the Overmind was exterminating humans either, but there was no sense in belaboring the issue. The war was over.
"Thank you. It seems like a good and noble House."

It is not a pleasant process, but it is necessary. But each life presents a new opportunity to learn and to grow."
