Well, after that mess with kid-Kusu and the yucky pink goo, Wishbone opted to stay inside while the weather was weird.

But just because he was inside doesn't mean he can't celebrate Halloween!

(Granted, he's just doing it to beg for treats, but who wouldn't?)

So Wishbone put on his Beowulf costume, got a little cauldron (that could hold more than it looked), and started walking around Hogwarts, preparing to ask of anyone the eternal question: Trick or treat?

The Baron looked briefly baffled, and then glowered at Simon. "Costume? What the hell makes you think I'm wearing a costume? I'm certainly not partaking in whatever this ludicrous festival is about. And why are you wearing Imperial fashion as a costume?" He was simultaneously confused, and annoyed- he didn't like being accused of wearing a costume, and he also thought that playing dress-up as an Imperial was in extremely bad taste. But why was he even wearing it? This question was one of the few that kept the Baron floating in the Great Hall, rather than returning to his rooms, where he'd planned to have dinner while watching Springer, and then perhaps a game of what the Americans called football, while avoiding whatever this weird holiday was.

... Simon winced. He really ought to know better than to try to make friendly overtures to strangers. It didn't often end well. "I'm sorry. ... Wait, Imperial fashion? This is something I used to wear back home."

Vladimir glowered far more pointedly at this comment. "And where, and when is your home?" If this was what he wore at home, it was difficult for the Baron to not guess that he was from some Imperial world. He supposed that if he was, he couldn't be from his own time, since surely then he'd have known better to presume it a costume. The Baron was a rather singular personage, and naturally well-known in his time. He supposed he easily could end up hailing from some other world entirely, with a coincidental resemblance to the fashions of his own. And hoped so. It would be far better than learning his last name was Atreides, or Fenrig.

Simon felt his initial faux pas wasn't severe enough to warrant such a hostile reaction. His jaw tightened. "The planet Osiris," he replied, now disinclined to sugarcoat the facts he normally attempted to make less shocking to the people here on Earth-that-Was. "And you?"

The Baron wasn't apologetic for the misunderstanding, as, potential encounters with certain Imperial families at Hogwarts would have possibly put a damper on his amusements. But, the Baron's anger and worry quickly dissipated with this news. It was just a strange coincidence. "Ah, it seems I had mistaken your fashion as something from worlds closer to my own. There is no planet Osiris in the Imperium, so it's a coincidence of fashion, apparently. I am from a planet called Giedi Prime."

Simon was not mollified, but would be cordial. "Giedi Prime is unfamiliar to me," he agreed. "As is the Imperium. Osiris is one of the core worlds of the Alliance."

"Excellent, as then you're not from mine." He smirked, really much relieved now. Given that other people often seemed to know people from their native worlds, he'd grown a bit concerned he'd eventually run into someone from his. And unless that someone was Feyd, on the whole it was a pleasure to be free of the whole tedious lot of them. Especially Piter- a point he had to remind himself of frequently. "As you're also from a world other than this one, I'm sure you'd understand that in some ways, Hogwarts is a relief. Mainly from certain people, and I'd hate for any of them or their representatives to show up and bother me."

Simon could unfortunately relate to this last bit. "Bother you?" His stiff jaw relaxed a bit.

The Baron nodded, plainly calmed down by the simple relief that Simon was not an Imperial. He appeared to have forgotten the 'costume' affront, due to this. "It's the trouble with politics- the power's of course a delight, but so often, the people are pure tedium."

"Ah. Boredom must be an occupational hazard." Simon hoped that his clothing didn't lead anyone else to mistake him for anything like this man. Their worldviews were not within a million parsecs of consonance.

"Amongst many others. But, it may be one of the worst." Other Imperials tended to be exceptionally irritating, with what he felt were narrow views, and lack of proper appreciation for decadence. Of course, when compared to the Harkonnen, standard decadence tended to seem quite conservative.

Simon would've been appalled at Harkonnen levels of decadence, had he guessed them. The Baron's bulk might have been a clue, but Simon felt very strongly that patients shouldn't be judged by their weight without at least the benefit of a full metabolic panel to figure out what might be the problem. And space bathrobes, on their own, were not a sign of unspeakable decadence but simply of good taste.

"I suspect boredom, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder," mused Simon. "I was about to say I'd expect someone involved in politics on such a high level to be more worried about assassins or rivals tracking him down, but ... I'm guessing that's probably old hat for you by now, as well?"

Although a full medical assessment would have in fact turned up a genetic predisposition to obesity, the Baron hadn't actually done a damn thing to prevent it. He enjoyed his decadence, and the image that such conveyed- he was above bothering with trivial matters like his waistline, because he was the Baron Harkonnen. And thus, could do anything he wanted to, and would, and everybody knew it. He barely worried about assassins, as, he held his house with an iron fist- he knew exactly who the potential assassins were, and, had no doubt he could handle them.

"Given the nature of Hogwarts, the most even a damned Atreides could do would be bore me to death, presumably. They'd be an unwelcome irritation, mainly because assassination isn't a worthwhile pursuit here. If it was, I'd be happy to see a few Imperials." As, Hogwarts didn't have the little drawback of kanly to worry about. There were no vexing rules to complicate matters. But as things were, if an Atreides suddenly appeared, he'd be stuck with them.

"It does seem a tendency of Hogwarts to bring people in ... hm, I might call them clusters," suggested Simon unhelpfully. "People who know one another, or knew one another, at home."

"Yes, I've noticed this unfortunate trend. I've been here several months without being afflicted by anyone that I know, thankfully." The only people that he wouldn't mind seeing were his nephews. But, even that notion was somewhat distressing, since, who would be managing things back home? "Sometimes, I wonder if I've merely been lucky these past months, but if so, I do hope that luck will hold."
