There had been only the most obscure and private of warnings. There were beings who could have predicted the event, with runes or through oracular visions, or by whatever arcane powers they brought with them to Hogwarts -- whatever powers had not fallen prey to the castle's unpredictable field of interference. But how might they have prevented it? And how could they banish it, now that its inevitable advent had begun?

It rose in the sky, bloody and shrieking, three weeks short of All Hallows' Eve. Having risen, it radiated visible rays of unclean light, a light which carried no warmth and lent a cast of jaundice-yellow to the objects thus illumined. Going outdoors was like trying on a new outfit in a fluorescent-lit fitting room. Everything looked subtly wrong.

Mostly its shrieks heralded nothing. They were disconcerting, and raised the hackles on the backs of animals; they caused a mild dyspepsia in some who heard the shrieks, though by no means all. Indeed, some sentient creatures remained unaffected altogether.

But then there were the rarer moments when the shriek of the Baby Sun signified the beginning of something strange. Phenomena that could best be described as Fortean.

The first of these, beginning with the sun's shriek at noon of the day it first rose over Hogwarts, was a rash of spontaneous fires afflicting inanimate and nonsentient objects. This took place not only on the grounds, but also within the castle. Students might reach for their books only to find the book beginning to smolder, then abruptly flaring into a tower of flame. A plate of food in the Great Hall might go to greasy ashes before the first forkful could be taken. The house elves seemed to be spared, at least for now. Pets were safe. But no inanimate object, no matter how cherished or sacred or essential, was immune.

The Baby Sun giggled its loathsome amusement and lolled in the sickly sky. The whole of the grounds lay bathed in its bilious light. Once a student stepped off the grounds, the normal and benevolent sun of Earth was the only sun visible. Yet all of Hogwarts remained under the Baby Sun's mysterious sway, and none could say why or wherefore.

Perhaps some intrepid students might seek to find an answer.

(( OOC: As usual with these kinds of events, you can opt out. Your stuff doesn't need to get burnt; you don't need to get caught outdoors in a rain of fish or blood, or whatever subsequent phenomena take place between now and Halloween. If you want, your character can be unable to detect the Baby Sun or the weird quality of light at all. The mods will banish the Baby Sun through certain mysterious IC means once Halloween has come to pass. ))

"EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!"

This was worse than the time at Source Cave!

Sunflora was shrieking as she ran out of the castle, slightly singed and burnt from when a tapestry combusted close to her. And it really HURT!

Sunflora snuffled slightly as she slowed down. She wanted a Rawst Berry.

Ah, George, missing the point as usual.

The Chatelaine Thecla shielded her eyes unnecessarily as she gazed toward the cackling heavens. The Baby Sun was not so bright that it would blind the beholder. Its ugly face could be viewed directly.

"When the sages spoke of a New Sun," she murmured, troubled, "I would not have dreamed they meant something such as this ..."

Mikami overheard this, and turned to her in panic. "You can see that thing too? Please, tell me it's not just me."

"I see it too," Thecla confirmed. Such was the weird fascination compelled by the Baby Sun, the Chatelaine did not even spare a moment to admire Mikami's enviably luscious locks. "The people of Urth prophesied the birth of a New Sun ..."

That Urth was a homonym of Earth might not help matters here.

Pets may have been safe, but Bucky was nobody's pet, no matter what Rob and the vet and police records might say.

It wasn't so much that he combusted as it was the stack of library books he was snoring on had begun to smolder. He hadn't even woken up at first--sure there was the slight smell of smoke, but he was so nice and warm and comfortable. And then the warmth had turned to heat and before he knew it the books--and his tail and part of his back--were on fire.

He'd jumped up and screeched, rolled around until the burning patches were put out, and zoomed the hell out of the library at the sight of a few more books starting to smoke. Outside in the hallway he assessed the damage. Most of the fur on his tail and a few patches on the back were singed, scrubby patches, and there may have been a blister forming where he couldn't reach.

So he grumped and whined until he saw a passing house elf, nabbed its towel, wrapped it around himself, and started walking to the hospital wing. It wasn't the vet, he rationalized, and they might be able to grow his fur back as well as treat the blister.

Severus was frowning over a new and elaborate drawing of the nose, complete with cell diagrams. The nose in the picture was enormous, hooked, crooked, pointed and enormous, even proportionally. The drawing itself was enormous, covering his entire desk, the end curling onto the floor. He hummed in satisfaction, considering it, as he considered each piece-in-progress, his master work. Nothing had spontaneously combusted yet, and he did not notice the strange light sneaking around his curtains.

He heard the grumblings and scratch of claws in the hall, and sighed in frustration at the imminent interruption to the creation of his masterpiece. The next stage was going to demonstrate much formation and the advantages born by the illustrious nose of his diagram over smaller, lesser noses.

Carefully he blotted his quill and its violent green ink, then ventured into the hall to face the latest disaster.

"Just what is going on out here, disturbing my industry? Will you lazy students never collect enough precision and diligence to keep from killing yourselves?" He huffed and scowled at the cat propelling itself in a towel and a scowl that matched his own.

"Hey, just the lady I wanted to see." To Bucky, there wasn't much point in discriminating between "male" and "female" in species that he wasn't interested in dating. "I need you to fix me. Except not like that." He unwrapped the towel, exposing the charred fur and rising blister on his back, just a few inches above the base of his tail. "It hurts. Also I'd like the fur back just the way it was. Oh," he added in an offhanded way, "the library might be on fire. I didn't do it."

Mikami was already in - not the most stable frame of mind. This didn't help.

He'd be found frozen in a doorway, transfixed with horror at the sight of the thing. This could not be happening. He must finally have snapped.

He wished he could at least find comfort in that thought.

During his time at Hogwarts, Bond had slowly been acquiring a nice stash (http://community.livejournal.com/hogwarts_hocus/1737993.html#cutid1) of ammunition and explosives. It had seemed prudent to have the tools of the trade on hand for this extended assignment.

Until, of course, his dresser went up in a deafening roar and a ball of flame.

Bond had his back to the dresser, which probably saved his face. Instinct and training took over and he dived behind the bed. A few flicks and incantations put out the fire and dispelled the smoke, and when the ringing in his ears subsided he went over to the dresser to inspect the damage.

He'd had a kit that could take one of the solid wooden doors off its hinges, or put a dent in the stone walls, and it had lived up to the promise. Six inches of stone was gone, and he'd have to come up with an excuse for that. In the meantime, it was time to see what cold be salvaged before finding another room to stay in.

Something felt.. weird.
Yeah, not exactly the most clinical of explanations, but there was something wrong. I was too on edge to stay in the common area, or even in the House in general.

The further I went into the corridors, the more evidence of some kind of magic gone amiss I ran into. A pair of house elves were trying to put out a stone bench that was on fire and as I passed, a tapestry went up with a whoosh.

Darting down a corridor, I figured I was going to be safe until an explosion flattened me against the wall. Lucky me, I was on the opposite side and didn't get bashed by the door or the hunk of wall it took with it.
When my ears stopped ringing, I checked the room.

"You ok?"

"I'm fine," he said, and straightened his suit jacket. It was almost as if he was used to having bombs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHBrbumr-Hc) go off around him, and it was only a minor inconvenience. "And you, are you all right? Did anything hit you?" Bond asked, more concerned about Anita's well-being than his own.

Kusuriyuri was on the edge of the Forbidden Forest, gathering those plants that were ready for harvest. Boukensha had taken to exploring the undergrowth, chasing the bugs that dared to cross his path with the enthusiasm that matched his size rather than his age.

The change in the color of the sky was...disconcerting, but nothing too extreme, given the oddness of Hogwarts. It wasn't until Boukensha tore out of the underbrush, his fur standing on end so that he appeared twice his size, yowling as if the end of the world was hard on his heels.

Kusuriyuri watched the cat and then turned back to the herbs he'd been gathering, putting the display down to vagaries of the feline mind. It wasn't until the bush in front of him burst into fire that he looked at the sky while falling back from the sky.

The infant's face in the sun was more than enough to explain what was happening. He picked up what he had gathered and ran after Boukensha, returning to their apartment.

Kurama had been cleaning the wreckage of greenhouse four, minding his own business. Then two of his worktables had burst into flame. He'd thought that perhaps it had been backlash from all the fire the Ojigi had eaten. But when he turned to look around, just in case, the sun...

Dear Gods. That couldn't be the 'newborn sun' that Kusuriyuri's phantom purple thing had mentioned?

He stared at it, completely thunderstruck, until he noticed out of the corner of his eye Kusuriyuri and Boukensha booking it from the edge of the forest. They definitely had the right idea. He left the greenhouse, promising himself he'd come back and work again as soon as night fell and the hideous specter was gone, and went to intercept Kusuriyuri and the cat at the door to their apartment.

Boukensha reached the door first, clawing at it until Kusuriyuri opened it before him. He bolted in as soon as there was room for his nose to fit through.

Kusuriyuri looked over his shoulder, feeling Kurama's approach. "Itoshii?" he said, holding out his hand. He needed to know that Kurama was all right. He also needed to formulate a plan.

Kuronue had been hanging around (quite literally, in this case) exploring the grounds a little more. He had to stop for a moment when the...thing rose. He tilted his head up, his eyes shaded by the brim of his hat, and narrowed his eyes at the...thing. His mouth hung open a little.

Was this place always crazy?

When the tree beside him spontaneously combusted he spared a few moments to stare at the pile of ash where it had once been before he darted back to the castle and made his way to the Slytherin common room. Once there he seated himself upside down in one of the chairs, his wings at an awkward angle, and closed his eyes, listening to the sound of terrified screams and crackling fires.

He smiled a little after a while. Like this, he could almost pretend he was at home.

Having nearly been asleep Kuronue jerked violently and so did his wings. He disliked being snuck up on, despised it, so he felt a little stupid for letting his guard down in a relatively new place.

"Don't touch!" he snarled as he righted himself in the chair, then paused to regain his composure. He still looked a little flustered.

He looked at the man before him wearily, then made his wings open and close a little. "They're real," he said, kinder this time, albeit indignant. Then he cleared his throat and extended a wing, gesturing to it wordlessly. If he wanted to touch, he could.

Elric of Melnibone and Stormbringer had just finished drinking the souls of several acromantulas, and so the albino was feeling rather energetic. He hadn't ventured to the school itself in the last few days, and decided that it was due a visit, in case he could actually prompt a response from 'Arioch'. Who apparently was so displeased with him that whenever he entered the Muggle Studies wing, the house-elves appeared and used their magic to toss him out disgracefully, much to Elric's dismay. So, he'd taken to lurking right outside of it, to no avail. Still, he was determined to regain his patron's favor somehow, and thought he'd give it another go.

As he was infused with fresh energy, Elric was feeling a bit high, and he hadn't sheathed Stormbringer yet upon stepping beyond the boundaries of the forest. He immediately noticed a strange quality to the light, and looked up, only to be confronted with the horror of the Baby Sun. Such an unholy monstrosity could only be the work of Chaos! Not of his Patron of course, as Arioch had better taste than Baby Suns, typically. Stormbringer murmured its dismay, similarily disturbed by this terrible, giggling vision in the sky.

The doomed albino remained rooted near the edge of the forest, attempting to figure out this mystery. A Baby Sun was obviously a rather fiery thing, so he wondered if it was perhaps a manifestation of Checkalakh the Burning God. In his own realm, Checkalakh had been only a minor Lord of Chaos, and was now dead in his own realm, his soul consumed by Elric and Stormbringer. But perhaps here, Checkalakh was more powerful? Although his theory was as innaccurate as most of his theories about Hogwarts, the fact that at that very moment Stormbringer's blade burst into flame was enough to confirm his flawed idea.

Stormbringer howled as the flames danced upon its blade, and Elric attempted to extinguish it by batting it on the grass, to no avail. He stabbed it deep and violently into the earth, presuming that this would snuff the flames, but as soon as he pulled it out, the fire returned, along with Stormbringer's wails. The Melnibonean began howling too as he ran towards the lake, the black sword flaming in his grasp. He plunged it into the chill waters, but still the flames were present, even beneath the surface. This was obviously some sort of twisted vengeance by Checkalakh for destroying him!

Elric ran back into the forest, screaming a string of Melnibonean curses, while Stormbringer howled incessantly. Its blade still burned, and was still burning when he returned to the vicinity of Smaug's lair. And it still howled, its unearthly cries carrying onto the school grounds even from the depths of the forest. Elric didn't know what to do with the black sword, since he couldn't extinguish it and sheathing it seemed unwise in its current state, so he ended up putting it amongst some rocks as not to burn down the woods while he began plotting his vengeance on Checkalakh. And still, Stormbringer howled. And howled. And howled some more.

Sunflora by now had gone to hide in the mangosteen grove. She was still snuffling from her burns (which had gotten worse) when she heard howling.

No, it couldn't be...Loudred could it?

Going to investigate like a good explorer, Sunflora went in the direction of the howling.

Oh. It wasn't Loudred. It was Elric.

But that wasn't bad, Sunflora and he were friends! But as she went over to talk to him, she saw a small treasure chest at the base of a tree. Again, like a good explorer, she went to open it, cause there might be treasure!

Well, it wasn't valuable treasure, but it was something she needed.

"Rawst berries!" Sunflora said in delight, scooping one up and eating it. Her burns began to naturally heal.

Yeah, I don't know either. It's Pokemon physics.

Her burns taken care of, Sunflora gathered the rest of the berries in a bag (Arceus knows she'll need them) and went to say hi.

"You're being loud! Like Loudred!"

Or that.

((As always, Elric's response to things = ultimate lulz.))

The unquestionably demonic baby-sun wasn't exactly like a giant disembodied eye hovering across a tower, but it was close enough that Smaug had paid little mind to it when he'd noticed it earlier in the day, as he'd flown by on his way back to his lair. He really should have known then that it was obviously going to be one of those days.

He was resting contentedly upon his hoard (and probably also on any Shoggies who may be there), deep in his underground lair, digesting the heavy meal of cattle he'd pilfered from one of the nearby farms when he detected faint wailing. It steadily grew louder as its source approached, clearly trespassing in his territory and causing his irritation to reach murderous levels before he recognised it—that vile sword Elric insisted he was bound to. But this was not its usual vexing whining and moaning that he'd grown accustomed to, and could thus tune out easily; this was something entirely different, perhaps more like... pain?

The sound of Smaug's growling as he lumbered up out of his lair was like the earth itself rumbling in complaint—a deep, ominous sound that did not bode well for anyone close enough to hear it. Of course, Elric would not be made to suffer the dragon's temper—Smaug had the sense to realise he might just be a little lonely without Elric's company, as absurd as it seemed. He did not need Elric in any way, nor did Elric need him, and Smaug perhaps enjoyed his friendship all the more because of it.

"What has the foul thing done now?" was his grumbled greeting as he appeared out of the trees and moved to stand opposite Elric and his howling sword. He looked on the flaming blade with obvious distaste, and leant down to scent the fire afflicting it. Not natural, and not dragon's fire, he could tell that much. It had a truly unholy reek which nearly caused his eyes to water.

He stares at it.

"...Shit," he says.

Then, "SHIT."

"A Nightmare? ...I need to get Primavera on this, NOW."

"Why ever would you do a thing like that?" Lezard, overhearing, had to ask. Of course the mage had no scruples whatsoever about eavesdropping, even if the speaker was speaking only to himself. "Certainly dear Miss Bobinski can do nothing about this amusing celestial phenomenon."
