((As always, Elric's response to things = ultimate lulz.))

The unquestionably demonic baby-sun wasn't exactly like a giant disembodied eye hovering across a tower, but it was close enough that Smaug had paid little mind to it when he'd noticed it earlier in the day, as he'd flown by on his way back to his lair. He really should have known then that it was obviously going to be one of those days.

He was resting contentedly upon his hoard (and probably also on any Shoggies who may be there), deep in his underground lair, digesting the heavy meal of cattle he'd pilfered from one of the nearby farms when he detected faint wailing. It steadily grew louder as its source approached, clearly trespassing in his territory and causing his irritation to reach murderous levels before he recognised it—that vile sword Elric insisted he was bound to. But this was not its usual vexing whining and moaning that he'd grown accustomed to, and could thus tune out easily; this was something entirely different, perhaps more like... pain?

The sound of Smaug's growling as he lumbered up out of his lair was like the earth itself rumbling in complaint—a deep, ominous sound that did not bode well for anyone close enough to hear it. Of course, Elric would not be made to suffer the dragon's temper—Smaug had the sense to realise he might just be a little lonely without Elric's company, as absurd as it seemed. He did not need Elric in any way, nor did Elric need him, and Smaug perhaps enjoyed his friendship all the more because of it.

"What has the foul thing done now?" was his grumbled greeting as he appeared out of the trees and moved to stand opposite Elric and his howling sword. He looked on the flaming blade with obvious distaste, and leant down to scent the fire afflicting it. Not natural, and not dragon's fire, he could tell that much. It had a truly unholy reek which nearly caused his eyes to water.
