Flying

Unable to wait any longer now that everyone had agreed to go flying with him, Adam sent owls to Nny, Susan, River, Kaylee, Teatime, Harry, Ginny, and Devi to let them know that he'd gone down to the Quidditch pitch and to meet him there. He snatched his broom and practically ran down to the field, excited to meet new people and get into the air once again.

"From... where?" He blinked. "I'm not really sure, anyway. What's 'mericet'?"

"Uberwald. It's an awful joke, I'm afraid." He shook his head. "Ha, Mericet...teacher I had." Teatime waved his hand vaguely. "He called Twurp's Peerage the Guide to the Turf. We never laughed," he added, meaningfully, as if trying to say 'because it's really not funny at all' without appearing impolite.

"Peerage." Nny scratched his head. "That's a list of people famous for being rich, that sort of shit, right?" He grinned impishly. "Doesn't sound like you thought too much of this teacher. Did you... do anything about that?"

"It's quite useful for knowing people on sight, yes. And...do anything? About Mericet?" Teatime chuckled. "Oh, no, I wouldn't ever think of that. He's very good with poisons, and the application thereof. And they did say that he killed a former Patrician of Ankh-Morpork. Besides, it'd get me into all sorts of trouble, and..." He looked shifty for a moment, then his face was open and smiling once more. "...and I really didn't need any more of that, did I?"

"Most of what I know about poisons is just theory. I know, it's a horrible gap in my practical knowledge." He shrugged. "I thought you were good at handling trouble."

"Good at handling it, yes. Apparently also rather good at starting it. There was a fuss, you see. People got a little upset."

His gaze darted briefly toward Susan. "I'd sort of gathered that much."

"Before that, even. They decided I wasn't...polite enough, you see."

"What? I think you're probably the most polite person I know."

"Inhumation-wise, you see." It was a very, very good-natured grin on the surface, but there was a hint of a sneer about it.

"What? I... that really doesn't have a lot to do with manners, does it?"

"Everything in the world to do with it, actually."

"Really? How?"

"Well, of course we are mostly hired to inhume the wealthy. Is it really respectful to kill someone while wearing a dirty suit? And killing the entire household is quite rude, apparently, if you really don't have to."

"...you know, if I actually respected someone, I think I wouldn't want to kill them. But it's never really come up. Now, that's depressing."

"I don't have the choice, do I? They pay, and we inhume. But we should always be polite in their final moments. Would you want to be killed by someone who can't bother to stay clean? People like knowing they're being done away with by men of class, apparently."

Nny bit his lip, trying to keep from bursting out laughing. "You really make killing for money sound boring."

"It depends, really, on just how much you like the work. It pays well, I suppose, and they provide a great education."

"Well, the killing part sounds good, or course. But all the restrictions..." He shook his head.

"I broke the rules, you see. I learned from my mistakes, of course. I suppose I should be more careful about adhering to them, but it can be so difficult."
