So, the talking hat (which was somehow more intimidating than a talking fridge) had placed Satou in Ravenclaw. The trouble was,he had no idea what that meant, and the bizarre little bug-eyed big-eared creatures he'd seen scuttling around unnerved him too much to try and ask.

He had, however, taken Kurama's promise of free room and board to heart, and a bit of wandering had lead him to the Great Hall, which happened to have a modest buffet laid out. Jackpot! Before anyone could tell him he couldn't, he took a plate and began piling on fish and chips (mostly fish).

That was the board part seen to. Now he needed to sort out the room.

It had been a week since Wishbone left Ravenclaw, spending his time between his room and A's recovering from his injuries.

Wishbone was feeling loads better, though it hurt to lay on that side, so he left Ravenclaw to explore.

He smelled lots of yummy food in the Great Hall, but before he could try to sneak away some, a house elf stopped him with a plate of the food he could eat all ready for him.

Woocha! Thank you! And Wishbone dug into his plate with gusto.

...wait, that dog didn't just talk, did it?

Wishbone looked up as seeing unfamiliar feet in his vision. He looked up.

Hi!

It did!

Maybe it was a flashback. Well, no reason to be rude to a hallucination,

"Er, hello."

Are you a new student? Wishbone wagged his tail.

"I'm new, yes." Satou peered at the dog thoughtfully. It didn't look threatening.

I'm Wishbone! And I'm plotting to get your food, he did not say. Because he still had his own food to eat.

"I'm Satou," he ventured cautiously. "Are there many dogs here?"

There are some. I know Matt has Koopa. And I've seen an old man with a big white dog. Neither of them talk much, though. Wishbone ate a piece off his plate. There are a lot of kitties too!

That reminded Satou of Misaki and the stray cat in the park. "Are they someone's kittiees, or are they strays?"

Mmmm, let's see, A has two, River has two, Kurama has one, and I think Kusuriyuri has one also!

"That is a lot of cats," he agreed with a little laugh. "They must eat a lot of cat food."

Well, A sometimes feeds them little bits of chicken! And they like catnip too. Sometimes I like turning into a cat so I can join them.

"You... turn into a cat."

Yeah, probably a hallucination.

Yeah, see? Wishbone pulled out his wand and turned into a cat.

Satou jerked back; even for a hallucination this was mildly surprising.

"Yeah, I guess you do. Is being a cat better?"

Well, things feel differently. Wishbone rubbed up against Satou's leg. And the other cats feel a lot softer and it's a lot easier to feel happy when we have catnip. But I think I like being a dog more.

Almost reflexively, Satou reached out to stroke behind the dog-cat's ears. Warm, soft, and fuzzy. Remarkably solid for a hallucination. "Does your food taste better as a dog?"

Yep! And my tongue can get it better! Wishbone closed his eyes in bliss.

"And you're bigger and stronger, too," Satou observed. It must be nice to be able to change between small and sleek and (comparatively) large and strong.

Yeah! Wishbone turned back into a dog. I can protect Schrodinger and Einstein and Branch and Bloom better as a dog!

"Are those the cats? Do the other cats have someone else to protect them?"

Well, yeah! Branch and Bloom have River, and Kusuriyuri has a cat too so he can protect them, and so does Kurama, and A and Near and Mello and L and Matt help too! Wishbone sat up straight. But I'm their knight!

"You're a dog, and a cat, and a knight?"

Well, metaphorically, I'm their knight. And sometimes when I play I like to pretend I'm one for real. But I will! I'll hurt someone if they hurt my friends!
