For fondue that took a month to make, it had better be pretty damn good.

Where Tako had gotten the powdered bicorn horn was anyone's guess, or really, why he thought it was fondue in the first place. But it was a wizard recipe! The wizards did strange things!

On Halloween, the potion was finished. Schlepping the cauldron behind his bucket, Tako brought it into the Great Hall to share. Only one ingredient was missing, and this he got by sweeping some dirt up off the floor. He poured the fondue into cups and dumped in the hair.

The cups began to change colors. Some were bright and appealing, and had a delicious aroma. Others seemed to be a bit rotten. Can't win them all, Tako figured, but overall the recipe was a success.

Mmm, cheesy.

((The polyjuice potion contains hairs from Beowulf, Dieter, Snape, Tinky Winky, Amaranth, Dwight, Nate, Dawnstar, Luna, and Homsar. Well, maybe not HOMSAR hair, but do you really want to think about it? Permission given by all the muns.))

Meg shook her head. "Wow... that seems terribly inconvenient for you," she said. "Do people ever wonder why you're gone so long, or is it like tessering where time moves differently depending on where you go?"

Meg had begun carefully carving out the face on the jack-o'Lantern. "Yeah," she said. "I think you're right about people. There are some you would never convince me to actually *like*, but even the least pleasant people have reasons why they are that way. And Wolfram made that awful sex ed class kind of... fun."

"Well, time is kind of funny ... Wait, what did you say? Wolfram went to that sex ed class?"

Yuuri suddenly felt very, very afraid.

"I didn't go to that."

"You didn't miss anything," Meg said with a shudder. "It was really awkward, and I only signed up becfause I like to go to classes. But, yeah. Wolfram pretended to be a girl, for some reason... Because he wanted to learn about boys. I thought he actually really was a girl, too, and I'm not sure I've forgiven him for that yet. But the way he talks about you... I sort of thought you might be a superhero or something, like in those comic books the twins like to read."

Yuuri scratched the back of his head and laughed that uneasy little laugh again. "Uh ... yeah, people from Shin Makoku are pretty big on wearing girls' clothes as disguises." He didn't want to admit that he had to dress as a girl more than once. At least the most recent time he was pretending to be a princess rather than a maid! "I don't think Wolfram meant to hurt anyone's feelings or trick anyone. Well, I mean, he meant to trick people into thinking he was a girl, yeah, but only to hide his true identity ... I mean, one time I was dressed up as a princess and I had to dance with the king of Small Shimaron. His name is Sara and he smells really nice. Anyway!" He'd just said way too much. "It's just a Shin Makoku thing, that's all! Wolfram is totally not girly at all, just pretty like a bishounen. A pretty boy. But definitely one hundred percent boy, even if he does like pink nighties."

"Look, I absolutely believe you," said Meg, who was not entirely keen on embarrassing either of them. "It's an... interesting custom, and we should embrace those. I mean, I once knew a woman who liked to wear bedsheets, and not just on Halloween. But, um, why did you have to spy on this Sara person in the first place, especially if you rule these people? Wouldn't more out in the open diplomacy work better? Then again, I've never been the ruling member of anything larger than the times Charles Wallace and I played pretend games about the ferandulae. Sometimes he'd let me be the mitochondria." She smiled wistfully.

Yuuri made a face. "Yeah ... I like to invite people over to visit Shin Makoku and see for themselves it's a nice place, you know? And I like to visit other countries. But ... there's a lot of prejudice against the Mazoku in the human lands. It seems weird to me, because in Japan most people have black hair and black eyes! But in the human lands that border Shin Makoku, people with black hair and black eyes are all considered powerful demons, and people would hate me if they saw me like this. So a lot of times I have to dye my hair and wear these really itchy contact lenses, to make my hair and eyes look brown ..." He shrugged. "And sometimes that just isn't enough. The time I had to dance with Sara, Wolfram and I had to dress like princesses in order not to be recognized and captured."

"That's awful," Meg agreed. "I mean, where I come from... er... maybe when, I don't know, things could have changed a lot... there are all kinds of issues about race. I'm from New England, so we don't have as much of a problem, but I just don't see why people with dark skin have to go to different schools, restaurants, even parts of buses. It's so silly and arbitrary, and it's not like you can help being who you are!" Her own comments made her think about that aborted slumber party, and she felt guilty. Was saying, 'But you don't look evil?' any less ignorant and stupid than saying, 'You're really smart for a black person.' No, she reasoned, it was not.

"My mom is a human and my dad is a Mazoku. I love them both," Yuuri proclaimed loyally. "I also love the people of Shin Makoku. It's my hope that as Maou I can make peace between humans and demons. It will be hard work but it's worth it!"

Meg smiled at him. "I have no doubt you actually can," she said. "And Shin Makoku sounds like a really interesting place." She looked down at her pumpkin and decided that it didn't look too lopsided. "So what do you think of Hogwarts?" she inquired, opting for a safer subject.

"I like Hogwarts a lot." Yuuri took a look at Meg's pumpkin. "That looks good! You know what, we ought to keep the pumpkin seeds and roast them for snacks." He would have scooped up the pumpkin guts from the table with his hands, but he had the crepe paper still. "I'm going to finish up with this stuff and say hi to some of the people who just came in ..." there was Light Yagami over there ... "but I'll be back! I'm glad we got to meet, Meg!"

Note that he had not asked anything else about the sex ed class Wolfram attended. This would be because Yuuri did not want to know.
