::Open RP - A's Garden::

It was a lovely day, really.

Even if the weather had been less than ideal, A would have gone to the garden. The plants needed to be tended, after all, and right now he's kneeling by the catnip bed, pulling out the few weeds that have dared to encroach on his territories.

Now that he has a computer with an internet connection, A is Discovering music, and he's singing, very badly, as he weeds.

He can't carry a tune, but there's an odd hiccuping tone to his voice that's a clear attempt to mimic Buddy Holly.

She reached the door Mello indicated and made to open it. It wouldn't budge. She turned back to the others.

I move to accommodate A's movement. "He's in no danger here, A. Nothing can happen to him here. None of us will let it. Let's get in your room and see your kittens. That is the best thing to do now." I try to keep my voice low, soothing. This is not natural to me and I really don't know if I'm doing the right thing.

"Kittens," A repeats faintly. L gave him the kittens, and he needs to take care of them. "Have to... to look after them, I..."

"We're at my room, we'll settle you in and bring the kittens to you. I want you to stay with me for a little while, alright?"

He glances up.

"The password. Brecht three butter-tart."

The door opened. Naomi held it wide for their passage.

I helped A into the room. "L will get your kittens now. We're just going to sit here for a moment and then you'll be able to take care of them, A." I really hope he doesn't decide he wants to follow L. He's not that heavy, but with him being taller than me, it's a little difficult for me to support him and I don't want to have to stop him.

And, inside - sitting on the bed, in fact, curled up almost L-like with a console in his hands - is Matt. He hears the door open and says,

"Hey, L, I got you some doughnuts if --"

He looks up.

"... shit. Mello? What happened?"

A's looking in Matt's direction, but not really seeing him. Leaning against Mello, he sways, muttering under his breath.

"Matt." L slides A's arm over his shoulder, so he isn't swaying too drastically.

"We need the bed. Ms Misora can tell you what happened, but elsewhere is probably best." He doesn't want to go back into it in front of A.

"In the common room, or?" She continued to hold the door half-open.

"Go, Misora will explain. Get the kittens, too, please, and their food and whatever else they'll need," I say to Matt, just repeating everything he'd already heard.

"C'mon, A. Let's get you on the bed. The kittens will be here soon. We can wash your hands while we're waiting so they don't try to eat your fingers, okay." I was going to need some serious time beating someone up after this. This is not my thing, but A is...one of mine. I sigh mentally, not letting it out physically.

"Okay." Matt gets up, pocketing the PSP and shooting L a concerned glance.

"My room'll be best. Give me a second to get the kittens... A, if you can, I'll need your password. I'll change it straight away, and you can change it again when you're feeling better."

Being addressed directly gets A's notice, barely, and he looks at Matt slowly, eyes focusing just enough to recognize him. It takes a long time for him to sort through Matt's words.

"Kumquat zero alpha diopside," he mumbles finally.

"I've got water and a hand towel." Both at his desk, although the water's in a drinking glass. It doesn't take much to tip some out, and wet the cloth.

"There are more pillows in the chest at the foot of the bed if you want to sit up."

Naomi stepped mostly back into the hall, still using one hand to hold the door for Matt.

While L's washing A's hands, I go to the chest and pull out some of the pillows. I adjust them behind him before sitting on the bed. "Everything's going to be okay, A. We're all here. We all can work together." God, I never thought I'd be the one saying those words. "It is better if we all work together, you see." Nor those. If Near were here, he might remind me of them later. Damn it.

Matt nips out of the room. He's back within ten minutes, with an arm full of kitten (cat?) and all the things they'll need floating along behind him.

"Here, A," he says, putting the pets down on L's bed. Then he turns to Naomi.

"Thanks. My room's just across here."

At the sight of Schrodinger and Einstein, a flicker of life crosses A's features. The young cats immediately jump off the bed and twine around A's ankles in furry figure-eights.

"Oh," A says faintly.

"They're glad to see you," he runs the washcloth firmly across the back of A's hand.

"And they're getting so big and grown up."

I can't help but smile at them. "They have gotten so big since I last saw them. You're taking such good care of them, A. C'mon, let's get you on the bed so you can pet them," I urge him to the bed, moving slowly to keep from tripping over the kittens who won't move more than a centimeter and are meowing pitifully for their master's attention. Or maybe they're worried. I don't know enough about cats to be sure.

A lets himself be lead to the bed and set down. Both felines hop up with him, and Schrodinger shoves her head under A's hand and headbutts it repeatedly, rapid-fire, while Einstein tries to stick his nose into A's opposite armpit.

"Oh," A says again, and strokes Schrodinger's head.

She nodded and followed, closing the door behind them.

"What happened?" Matt asks, as soon as the door is shut.

It only takes a second to get to his own room. "Down, Koopa," he says as the puppy surges forwards. "Uh. Here, I'll make some space..."

There's a chair, but it's covered with an unreasonable amount of junk.

She was content to stand. "I'd already upset him by saying B looked something like L. It looked like he'd recovered, but then I let him know... what you told me. What happened to L - or what's going to happen - during the Kira case."

Matt clears it anyway, before sitting down on the bed. Koopa's busy investigating Naomi's feet.

"Ah. That... kinda makes sense." He reaches to pull out a cigarette. "A's a little bit - devoted? - to L."
