Open RP in the Ravenclaw bar

It had become painfully obvious to John that he hadn't been sorted into Ravenclaw for his brains.

After discovering that Dieter Prohl practically lived in the house's sauna, it was clear that he was really just there to be part of a matched set of cabana boys. What bothered him even more than that was discovering that after he got over the shock, he really didn't care.

He'd gotten settled in, found some food for the dog, and was now puzzling over his dilemma in the Ravenclaw bar. Stay, or go? It wasn't every day that he had a heart attack over a woman. She was in New York, and he was in Scotland. On the other hand, maybe he'd been sucked here to break his curse on his own terms.

The bar had a good selection of mixers, and he was drinking a glass of sparkling water that had multi-colored bubbles. He speared a lemon slice with a plastic wand drink-stirrer as he mulled over his choices.

Laura came into Ravenclaw's common room and paused at the bar. Seeing a familiar face there decided her on hanging around awhile.

She went around the bar and rummaged through the bottles. "They got a good Scotch in this place?"

"I don't know," he said. "I haven't looked." He wasn't going to, either. But he did see a familiar bottle over her head. "Try that (http://www.scotchwhisky.net/malt/glendronach.htm) one," he said, pointing at the bottle.

"Ahh. Anything with 'glen' in it, I like." She snagged the bottle, dropped a few ice cubes in a glass and poured two fingers' worth.

She brought the drink around the bar and settled onto a stool. "You settling in okay?"

"Me? Oh yeah," he said, with a half-grin that was so close to genuine that only a pro could tell it was a fake. "The dog, not so much. Thirty-six misses his bed."

Laura grinned back. "Trust me, they'll bend over backwards to make him feel at home. This place is incredibly pet-friendly."

She took a sip of scotch and sighed appreciatively. "You named him Thirty-six? There a joke there I'm missing?"

"I've heard you've got owls here. What's next, geckos?" If they could sell car insurance, maybe they could deliver memos, too. Or maybe he could bring an owl back home with him. He'd use it to page Santori.

"Nope, just numbers One through Thirty-five." He took a sip of his water.

She made a face at the mention of owls. "I wouldn't be a bit surprised."

She took another sip, swirled the ice cubes around in the glass. Glanced at Amsterdam out of the corner of her eye.

"You ever do anything you regret, Detective?"

He nearly choked on his water. The question was personal and unexpected. The possible answers were so many that he had no idea where to start, even if he'd tell her anything.

"Who doesn't?" he asked her.

Phoenix would probably agree with that sentiment, lawyer he may be, sometimes he doesn't feel that smart, but he supposed he was good looking.

Not in this outfit though, he had felt lazy and wore whatever he found (which would become his signature outfit in seven years time) and headed out to Ravenclaw proper, because as far as he knew, Pearl was still mad at him.

"Hey," he waved at John as he looked through for some coffee.

"Hi," John didn't know this guy from Adam, but who did it hurt to be friendly?

"Nice cap." He meant it, too. It looked warm.

"Ain't it? I have no idea where it came from. Feels familiar, though." Time paradox liek whoa. He set a mug on the counter and started a pot. "Phoenix Wright, by the way."

The detective held out his hand. "John Amsterdam. Pleased to meet you." The coffee looked like a better idea than the water he was drinking. "Do they have spare mugs around here?"

Phoenix shook John's hand. "I think so, Chief said something about there being extras and too much sake and something." He dug around some more and found a second mug. "There we are. Now just to wait for the coffee to finish."

"Chief? You've got a job here?" If there were jobs in Hogwarts, one thing was certain: the school did not need another homicide detective. Not only did homicide seem unlikely in a school where nobody could die, but the position had already been filled several times over.

"No, just old habits die hard. She was the head of the office and she helped me through law school, so I called her that. Sometimes I still call her that." The coffee finished percolating and Phoenix began to pour in the mugs. "It's nice to see Mia again, and not through her sister either."

"You lose touch, or something?" John asked, taking a mug. He knew how that went, although usually it was intentional on his part.

"So you did end up in Ravenclaw, after all?"

Or he could be just visiting, but L doesn't think it's likely.

"Yes, I did," John said. "Home of the smart people, or so I've been told."

"That is apparently the qualification."

L thought he would. He's a detective, after all.

"But is that actually what got you here?" he asked. Maybe other people had been handed a towel and been told to strip, too. "Because that hat didn't seem too interested in any of my qualifications." Of the intellectual sort, at least.

"I don't remember. It occurred for me in a different time line, but I imagine it would be."

Deduction is who he is.

"Different time line." John resisted the urge to rub his temples, but he was very, very confused. Resurrected people were in the frame of his experience. Time/space differences were not. Neither was popcorn, but he hadn't learned about that yet.

"Is that like a past life?"

"I am not sure of the exact circumstances, but my impression is that I was here before, I left, and now I am here again with no memory of it. There is very little evidence, unfortunately."

Bean wasn't sure what he'd been expecting, but a bar wasn't it.

John was surprised to see a kid so young on the lose; Bean couldn't be much older than Corey, Omar's grandson.

"Yes, it is," he said to Bean, with a friendly smile. "Is this where you were going?"
