Salutations from outside the sorting room!
They've put me in Ravenclaw, with no surprise at all - and I'm told already there are ways to tweak my laptop so it'll boot. Sounds like an entertaining evening to me -- join me for dinner and then playing with electronics?
Tosh.
Salutations!
They've let me loose on Ravenclaw, it seems, with all my notes intact. I'm working on getting my laptop functional again -- when I do, care to take a look at my work? I've been staring at some of the equasions so long I'm sure I have blind spots -- we didn't have anyone else solid enough at maths to really pick it apart at Torchwood.
I'd love to see your work, as well -- I don't suppose you have any of your articles here?
Tosh.
Hello,
I'm sorted -- into Ravenclaw. Big surprise, I'm sure. I was wondering -- do you have any of your films here? I think I'd like to see one. Documentaries have always been my favourite sort of cinema.
Toshiko
Hey, guys:
I'm safe in Ravenclaw. I promised you I'd get you all into the bar for drinks -- how's Wednesday night for everyone? Nothing wild, I promise. (Can you still get chinese takeaway here? We ought to have that, too, for old times' sake.)
Tosh.
Return Owl to Tosh
Date: 2007-02-12 08:46 pm (UTC)That sounds fantastic. I'll bring my data pads along. If nothing else, they make nice paperweights- which is actually the very definition of irony.
All the best,
Jadzia

Date: 2007-02-13 02:16 am (UTC)I assume datapads are handheld computers? Ironic indeed! You'll have to tell me just how far computing technology has gotten in the last years for you so I can drool.

Re: Return Owl to Tosh, wearing a combadge
Date: 2007-02-13 10:36 pm (UTC)I thought I would send off a sample of my equipment, in case you had any preliminary inquires
and also to show off a bit so you think I'm impressive. This is my spare combadge (http://www.memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Combadge)- the one I usually wear is currently being used as jewelry by a god of discord. Happily, years in Starfleet have taught me to keep a spare. It acts as a homing mechanism, and a universal translator, among other things.I was thinking somewhere in Hogsmeade for dinner?
All the Best,
Jadzia
Re: Return Owl to Tosh, wearing a combadge
Date: 2007-02-13 10:38 pm (UTC)Universal translator? Colour me jealous
and impressed, not that I wasn't already.I see they still do a decent bit of designing in the future -- you'd be surprised how easy it is to pick out a human aesthetic.Hogsmeade's the little town, isn't it? I'd love to go see it.
Sometime later in the week -- or maybe next week -- Dr. Malcolm and I were thinking of getting all the tech folks together to pool our resources. I heard the muggle studies teacher has electricity running somehow in his room, and we've a bit of a project. There's a girl with wetware who can no longer see, as the wetware was (I'm guessing) some sort of prosthetic. Getting her sight back would probably get us really quite close to powering most of our gadgets. What do you think?
Tosh.
Re: Return Owl to Tosh, wearing a combadge
Date: 2007-02-14 01:13 am (UTC)Talk about human aesthetic- you wouldn’t believe the uniforms women wore back in the 2260’s. Mini skirts and knee-high boots. It was a dark time.
Toshiko, it sounds like you’re forming the resident science club! Count me in.
This is great timing, because I’ve been working on a theory in regards to the viability of electronics at Hogwarts. I had a conversation (http://community.livejournal.com/hogwarts_hocus/1156800.html?thread=59145408#t59145408) the other day with a wizard named Harry, who said in his world, magic and electronics have never mixed. Perhaps it's an issue of currents being reactive towards one another? If we could find a way to block out whatever frequency magic is transmitted by, we might be able to create a space where our gadgets work.
Just an idea. I’m not sure how viable it would be, as I have no idea how magic fundamentally works. All the more reason to discuss it with a group!
And yes, Hogsmeade is the little town. It’s the only town for miles, so I can reasonably guarantee I won’t get us lost.
All the Best,
Jadzia
Re: Return Owl to Tosh, wearing a combadge
Date: 2007-02-14 01:21 am (UTC)An adventure either way! I'll let you know when the science club is going to get together. I'm going to bother my friend Ianto into helping with the logistics -- he's not into high-end combinatorics but the man puts me to shame when it comes to knowing my own files -- and we'll pick a date for the meeting from when he's free.
I'll trust you with the navigation, I've never been much for it without a GPS unit. Looking forward to it,
Tosh

Date: 2007-02-12 11:22 pm (UTC)I'd be delighted - and if you can show me how to get my own laptop working, I'd be in your debt forever. I know exactly what you mean about blind spots, believe me. I do have a couple of recent articles, nothing earthshattering about them, I'm afraid, and the rest is back home. A couple of the major ones detailing the Malcolm Effect are online if you can get that laptop of yours onto the 'net. Just let me know when you're ready to start crunching numbers.
Speaking of online access, have you by any chance met another new arrival to Ravenclaw, a Mlle. Martine Desroubins?
Yours,
Dr. Ian Malcolm
Re: Return owl
Date: 2007-02-13 02:13 am (UTC)I'll do my best; Jadzia and I have an electronics-dissection session planned, I'll let you know what we work out. Would it be overly poetic if I said life wasn't real without imaginary numbers? My fingers itch for a sliderule.
I haven't, though the name sounds familiar. Why do you ask?
Toshiko
Re: Return owl
Date: 2007-02-13 04:57 am (UTC)I sometimes think imaginary numbers are more real than real life. How's that for poetic?
Miss Desroubins was being Sorted into Ravenclaw around the same time you were, you may have seen her in either place. She's a researcher from 40, 50 years in the future, or rather, a future.
In her timeline the Internet is virtual reality based, and heavy users like her have bio-implants in their necks to access it directly. As Miss Desroubins is blind, that opened up a world to her that Hogwarts, with no tech and no 'net, has closed off again. I thought if we could get some computers working, then perhaps we could create something her biotech could interface with.
Didn't I hear Jadzia - that's the tall lady with the patterned birthmarks, correct? - is from a future timeline as well? She might have some thoughts. I believe I saw her at Miss Desroubins' Sorting. That's someone else I must get around to meeting - so many interesting new people coming into Ravenclaw lately!
Yours,
Malcolm
Re: Return owl
Date: 2007-02-13 02:52 pm (UTC)We should start an imaginary numbers withdrawl support network, it sounds like. I've been told the muggle studies tutor got a television working, at least -- electricity was the first big stumbling block! I plan on borrowing his notes.
Once we have that, the next block is AC to DC power -- that is, building and charging a battery for Miss Desroubins. It'll be a short jump from there to building a reciever and looking for signals I can piggyback on and get us access to a network, hopefully the internet.
Jadzia is from a future timeline, yes -- several centuries ahead of us. She's got some technology -- why don't I just set up one big meeting? I'll owl Ianto and see if I can sweet-talk him into making us some of his amazing coffee magic and we can get organized all together.
Toshiko
Re: Return owl
Date: 2007-02-13 05:44 pm (UTC)A tech-geek group meeting sounds like heaven. Aside from notes and articles, anything I should bring?
Malcolm
Re: Return owl
Date: 2007-02-13 08:16 pm (UTC)Just a steady brain. I'll see Ianto tomorrow, I'll ask him then and send out owls after.
Toshiko
Return owl.
Date: 2007-02-13 12:56 am (UTC)Toshiko,
I'm working on something at the moment, when that's done maybe I could show it to you first.
Just have to find a way to develop the film and project it.That is if you'd like.- Mark
Re: Return owl.
Date: 2007-02-13 02:01 am (UTC)An exclusive first showing? I'd be honoured. I'll even bring the snacks. Can you tell me what it's about? Or is that bad luck?
Toshiko
Re: Return owl.
Date: 2007-02-13 02:18 am (UTC)Yes,
especially for youcan't wait. Bad luck, hopefully you'll like it.- Mark
And there was the small fact he had to film most of it.

Date: 2007-02-13 02:36 am (UTC)Wednesday sounds excellent, I shall order the chinese and bring it along. What time shall we come, and would you like any help organising things before hand?
yours sincerely,
-Ianto Jones.

Date: 2007-02-13 02:48 am (UTC)You didn't need to go to the trouble, you know I could have ordered it. That said: thank you. Let's try for a late dinner, say, seven o'clock?
Tosh.

Date: 2007-02-13 03:08 pm (UTC)While you're digging things up, think you can find a little red candle? It's JD and Jack's first valentines day, I thought we could put it in a spring roll and have a toast to them.
Tosh.

Date: 2007-02-13 02:42 am (UTC)That's excellent, congratulations! Jack and I would love to come, we'll be there! Chinese? I think you can, not sure though. I can have a look! Jack says that you've to remember it's Valentines day, and that Chinese food sounds great.

Date: 2007-02-13 02:52 am (UTC)Blast, I'd forgotten about that day. If the two of you want a pass this time around, I'd understand. First since you're married, isn't it?
Ianto's already managed the Chinese -- I should have known he'd have a line on the good food around here -- so all you two need to bring is yourselves, if you come. If you don't, we'll sort out some other time and gossip about you terribly while you're out being romantic.
Tosh.

Date: 2007-02-13 03:13 am (UTC)Yeah, it's our first time, but we'd still love to swing by!
Excellent, well we'll be there for a while at least, it'll be great to talk to everyone.
-JD and Jack.
Response to Tosh
Date: 2007-02-13 03:29 am (UTC)Wednesday sounds perfect, eh? I'll save the hypervodka for later.

Re: Response to Tosh
Date: 2007-02-13 03:07 pm (UTC)Brilliant. Have we exposed Jack's new husband to that gutrot yet?

See you tonight,
