Carrie found the flier in the Hufflepuff common room on her way to breakfast. Once the shock subsided, she grabbed parchment and quill and copied the information to study over coffee. Lots and lots of coffee, this was going to take.

Candidates for Hufflepuff prefect....Jeeves, Quaxo, Toki - Carrie.

She read and reread her scribbled notes until her vision blurred. Prefect?! When did this happen? How did this happen? Why would anyone put her up for such a thing? The only time she'd ever nominated for anything, much less elected, the honor came with a punch line at the end... Then again, there was always the chance someone meant it as a compliment - wasn't there?

Although she wasn't really aware of it, the table and all the objects on it began to tremble ever so slightly.

((Feel free to come poke her. I'll be in and out today, but I'll be checking in as often as I can!))

Osaka is rather surprised to see her cereal shaking. She didn't think there were earthquakes in Scotland... except it was only the table that was shaking. That was weird. She leans over to check on the states of other people's breakfasts. "Excuse me? I think there might be something wrong with this table."

"Oh. It's stopped. I think we should find someone and tell them that the table is defective." She cocks her head and stares at the girl for a minute. "You're very red."

"Oh. Okay." She stares at the coffee and thinks. "Is it the temperature or the caffine?"

"Oh. I'm no good with caffeine, hot or cold. I stick to juice." She sips her orange juice for emphasis. "Maybe that's why I'm sleepy all the time. I can't drink coffee or soda to wake up."

"It doesn't work," she agreed. "But it's okay. I might fall asleep all the time, but at least I have good dreams." She stares at the girl for a little while. "Have we met before? I'm Osaka, in Hufflepuff."

The cause of Carrie's shock and confusion wandered into the Great Hall, leafing through an actual copy of Hogwarts: A History that he'd gotten from the library. The book was fascinating, and so he barely paid attention to where he was going until he happened to glance up and saw a nearby table shaking.

He closed the book and might have walked on except that he recognized one of the people at that table.

"Hello, Carrie," he said with a shy smile as he sat down across from her. "You look a little upset. Is something amiss?"

Sam recognized the list, and had to hide his grin behind pourinhg himself some tea. "Oh, it's nothing, really. I'm just reading something called Hogwarts: a History. I thought it might be nice to know about this place." His eyes were drawn to the slip of paper. "Congratulations," he said warmly. "Are you going to accept." Not one ofor subterfuge, he looked at her with a clearly hopeful expression.

"Maybe," Sam allowed. "But you're always at sortings. At least, you seem to be at the ones I show up for. That counts for something. At least people know who you are."

"You helped *me* a lot when I first got here," Sam stated quietly. "Actually... You're probably one of the few Hufflepuffs I can actually put a name to," he added ruefully.

Sam nodded. "I've been doing a fair bit of hiding myself. I didn't go to the Christmas party, and... The less said about New Year's the better." He grimmaced. "But it's easier to hide in some ways, I suppose, which is probably why we do it."

Sam considered that. "I was scared at first," he admitted. "My father made my life difficult back home in Horn Hill, but... I understood his bullying, you know? At the Wall, that was different. But then I met Jon Snow and... Things got easier. He was my friend... The first real friend I ever had aside from my mother, and he wouldn't let me hide either. He made me feel like I was actually good for something. And... I helped him, too. I think the proudest moment of my life was riding with him back to the Wall after he thought he might dessert. A few of us... convinced him not to." He smiled slightly. "I guess I'm not making sense, but I guess people really do need each other."
