Sally's few bags of personal belongings were put away immediately after she was sorted. She did not feel comfortable enough to start exploring the castle yet and reminded herself that she had a nice scarf to knit.

She sat herself on a chair that was too big for her next to a fire that was too bright. Sally knew she shouldn't complain though. These were just trivial things that would become better with time.

Out of a small bag by her feet, Sally pulled out a roll of red yarn and two needles. The knitting had begun.

((Waaaay backdated to after her sorting. Bother please?))

Data had gone back to Ravenclaw after sorting the young woman, Sally. He had the vague intent of practicing... magic... though he still didn't like to call it that. He'd become quite proficient at the levitation charm (and taken to carrying his wand in a modified phaser holster) and thought it might be time to learn something else; he'd come to a decision as to what while walking back. It built neatly on what he had already learned, and would likely be useful. It also required very little in the way of supplies.

He set his tricorder on a spare table and backed up a few paces, focusing and searching for that tumbling feeling when the magic gave in and allowed itself to be directed.

"Accio tricorder."

It flew off the table and landed on the floor near the leg of a chair. Unfortunately, that chair happened to be significantly to Data's left; still, it had moved, and with less effort than he'd needed previously.

Data went to retrive the tricorder and noticed that the young woman from earlier was sitting there. "Excuse me," he said, bending down and picking it up. "I did not mean to bother you."

"It is a tricorder," he said. "A device used to take readings of the surrounding area and analyze the findings."

"No," Data said, "I am attempting to summon the tricorder using magic. This is the second charm I have attempted."

"Very well," he said, experiencing a strange fizzing along his neural pathways that translated into a feeling not unlike the few times his internal gyroscope had gone offline - a lurching sensation and weakness in the limbs. If he didn't know better, he would say he was nervous.

He placed the tricorder on the table again and backed up.

"Accio tricorder."

This time it came towards him; however, it landed a few feet short.

"As you can see, I am not very experienced."

"Thank you, but the charm is intended to summon the object directly to me. It should not be landing that far away." Data frowned, as much at his own lack of skill as his inability to anwer her question. "As for how it is done... I do not know. Using magic appears to be largely a matter of concentration and will; however, its existence violates all known laws of the natural world."

Data nodded. "That is a possibility. Initially I did not believe I was even capable of magic; I did not decide to attempt it until another student convinced me to try a simple charm using her wand. After discussing it with my friends," and there was a barely perceptible pause before the word, "I came to the conclusion that it was better to attempt it and fail than never have attempted it at all."

He tilted his head slightly. "Have you attempted magic yet?"

He thought for a moment, then offered her his wand. "Would you like to?"

((....aaaaaand I just realized how that sounds out of context. Can't think of another way to say it, though))

Data considered this for a moment.

"The first charm I attempted was the Levitation Charm. It is performed by envisioning the item you wish to levitate rising in the air, while saying the spell - Wingardium Leviosa - with this gesture." He gave a swish and flick that would do Flitwick proud and the ball of yarn she was using rose in the air briefly, settling back down at his gesture.

"Will you try it?" he said, offering the wand to her again. "I was able to perform it, albeit wekaly, without any belief in my own magical abilities. It is likely you will be able to as well."

Janet had been at Hogwarts long enough to be only slightly surprised at the sight of a woman who looked like she had been stitched together out of cloth in the Ravenclaw common room. Belatedly, she realized that staring was probably rude and went over to greet the... woman? "Hi, I don't think I've seen you around here before." She set down the latest batch of books that she had borrowed from Madame Nutter (http://community.livejournal.com/hogwarts_hocus/982027.html?thread=48763659#t48763659) and held out her hand. "I'm Janet."

"Glad to meet you, Sally." Janet laughed and shook her head. "No, I'm not studying at the moment. There's not enough room in the Hospital Wing for another doctor and I'm planning to satisfy my curiosity of magical healing methods. What are you knitting?"

"I haven't practiced in a while, but yes." She shrugged. "Well, that's what a doctor's supposed to do. Though I suppose there are always a few in every bunch and all."

Janet whistled, impressed by the scarf. "Nice. I was always useless at knitting and crocheting. Great at sewing, though."

Janet decided to drop it. Bad doctors tended to either be hillariously inept or traumatic, and people liked talking about the inept kind. "I see," she said, looking at the stitches. If the place had a talking Hat, living ragdolls shouldn't surprise her, right? "Does it hurt if you pull a stitch? And yeah, I had a machine in my house. I mostly used it to hem things."
