Saturday night.

Laura Palmer waited at the front door of the castle, dressed to the nines in a dark red dancing dress, pacing restlessly in two-inch high heels. Now all she needed was a partner.

She had a sinking feeling she might be about to be stood up. She had coerced Alan Grant into asking her to go dancing - more specifically, to "get her feet stepped on" - but he couldn't have been less enthusiastic about the idea...

Grant, for his part, had found a suit jacket in the back of his wardrobe. He had spent a few minutes searching for the pants until he remembered that he'd spilled sauce on them and never got around to getting them cleaned. Giving up on formality, he went for what was the least torn, dirty, or wrinkled (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/Catremistrae/110meet2.jpg).

"Hey," he said when he saw her. "You're looking very nice tonight." He shifted uncomfortably. "So, you're the one with the plan tonight."

"No, I don't think I have," he said.

He took her hand. "No, I said I'd go, so I will. I take it that more mundane forms of transportation weren't possible."

"The brooms I've heard about. Nemo told me that he went flying on one," Grant said.

When the Knight Bus appeared in front of them, he was floored by the bright purple color, which was sure to be a headache in the making.

He reached into his pocket. "How much for two to Aberdeen?" he asked the conductor.

"Yeah, something like that," Grant said distractedly. He was still boggled by the sheer gaudiness of the bus. He turned to Laura. "Would you like a hot chocolate?"

He ducked to avoid hitting his head on one of the dangling chandeliers. "Every time I think I've become used to what I see here, something new always comes along."

It only took a few minutes to arrive in Aberdeen, but to Grant it was one of the most sickening rides he'd ever been on. "We are never doing that again," he moaned as he wondered where in Scotland the driver had left his stomach.

"Ten minutes of my life that I'm never going to get back."

He noticed her discomfort and put a hand on her shoulder. "Are you going to be all right?" he asked.

"After that, I think anything short of a roller coaster is going to be better."

"All right," he said. "But I've got to warn you, you're not the first person to try to get me to dance. If past performance is any indication, this is not going to end well."

"Is there something endearing about public humiliation that I'm missing?"

He let himself be led, resisting the urge to pull back. About a third of the way on the floor he stopped. "Less chance of getting noticed on the edge," he said.

"And if it stopped there, that would be fine. But there's moving involved, and that's where it gets complicated."

He was beginning to recognize that he was losing the battle. "Aren't I supposed to be holding one of your hands, though?" he asked, taking her right hand.

"There's a lot that's different from the other day!" he protested.

"It's not really leading if you're telling me what to do, is it?"

"All right, all right. I promise to not complain for the next half-hour. Will that work?" He tightened his grip around her waist, pulling her closer.

"Well, that I can do, but it makes the dancing kind of hard, doesn't it?"

"Yeah." While they had been talking, the song had switched to "Moon River." Grant listened, trying to tap his foot in time with the music. "So what's this one?" he asked.

"1-2-3, 1-2-3, right? You're going to have to lead this one, though."

"Right. Okay, so, 1-2-3..." he stepped forward with his left foot, across with his right, and brought his feet together on three. "Then back..." right back, left across, and together. He'd completed a box step, but had been watching his feet the whole time. Grant looked up. "How'd I do?"

"But if I'm looking at you, I can't see where I'm going," Grant said. He took a step back, but with his own left foot, and Laura ran into his shin. "Aaah! See?"

"It's not panic, it's lack of coordination," he grumbled. "So when do we get to the part where I'm leading?"

"Well, there's not very far to go," he said, looking around the room. "I promise to stop before we waltz out the door."

He smiled a bit. "Thank you." Grant started to lead her in a straight line. While he wasn't saying, "1-2-3," it was clear that he was thinking it to himself. At the edge of the dance floor he looked up and gave her a true smile. "How was that?"

"I knew there had to be more to this," he joked. "Okay. Show me how."

"Let me see it again one more time. So it's left, diagonal..." He took a step too far to the left. "No, that doesn't seem right."

By now the song had long switched from a waltz to a more upbeat song. "What do you think?" he asked. "Should we keep dancing to our own beat, or try something else?"
