Sarah Jane wandered through the halls, not really going any place specifically. She needed to gather up some food to have both Jack and Rose over for dinner and JD of course. Another party, hopefully much better then the first.

As she thought, she jotted down the things she needed on a piece of parchment. So much for notebooks.

On his way back to his office from the Owlery (as he had ceased to keep an owl personally but still had occasion to send correspondence via owl), Stephen Maturin came across someone he recognised. It was the very nice young woman who had given him advice on knickers. Whether she would recognise him now that he was no longer a woman did not occur to him.

"Miss Smith," he hailed her, with a friendly wave.

Stephen stopped short, then laughed. "I suppose not. My name is Maturin."

An amused snort. "Extra parts would be a way of putting it. But how do you do? Were you sorted into Gryffindor after all?"

"I must say it was not all that different to be female than it is to be male," Stephen admitted. He had not the least bit of shyness about discussing this, it being a scientific and medical topic to his mind. "One would think the sexes rather more fundamentally different, or at least in my time it was so thought. Certainly some garments and customs are different. If I never use a depilatory potion again I will be just as happy."

Stephen shrugged. "When I was alone and working, I rather often forgot I was a woman at all. My mind remained unchanged insofar as I can tell. I did exhibit a more marked tendency to express my thoughts verbally, which I am not so accustomed to do ordinarily, but the substance of my thoughts underwent no change. There was nothing I could do as a man that I could not do as a woman. All told, had I amputated my breasts as the Amazons of legend, I think I should not have noticed any difference between masculinity and femininity at all, and binding those with what is termed a 'sports bra' made them scarcely an annoyance anyhow."

The Doctor had, of course, been trying very hard to avoid people. People as in his companions/former companions. He seemed to have done a right well job of offending every single one of them. He had also talked himself out of owling the ones from the dinner and apologizing because he's cowardly like that.

"Oh, uh...hullo, Sarah Jane," he greeted awkwardly when he saw her.

"...Just a bit, yeah. Um, look...about...about the other night, I just wanted to..." Damn it, why did he have to be so very bad at apologies? "I mean, I hadn't meant to...that is, I was sort of..." He sighed. Of course. Of course this wasn't going to work out well.

"Not to say I think I was in the wrong, and I'm certainly not going to take back anything that I said. I just...it sort of might've been not the kindest thing I've ever done or said to friends..."

"Wha--'course I'm nice!" he protested. "I'm nice a lot of the time! You sayin' I'm not nice? Why's that, then?"

"Because he think's he's better than us." Jack happened to be wandering along, Jack insulted the Doctor, Jack smiled to Sarah Jane as Key gave the Doctor a funny little growl. Obviously picking up on her pet's mood. "And he doesn't know that much about us, he just likes to think he does."

He was about to answer Sarah Jane (that is, ask more questions and be more insulted) when Jack came along. Oh fun. He crossed his arms and gave him a bit of an exhausted look. Hey, at least the bruise had finally stopped discolouring his cheek.

"I don't think this little conversation included you. I thought you said to JD to say to me about, oh, I don't know, not seeing you or him or your mutt for however long you're going to decide to stay mad at me."

Lily was walking Steeler through the corridors; the puppy was getting fat and lazy already, lying about in her room whilst she studied. So, a change of scenery. They were headed outside - Steeler could run about and Lily could get some work done without puppy eyes begging her for attention.

When they turned the corner, Lily spotted Sarah Jane. Grinning, she waved at the other woman. "Hello, mate. Haven't seen you in a bit. How've you been?"

Eyes taking in Sarah Jane's slightly morose appearance, Lily said nothing, simply giving the other woman a brief look of concern before kneeling down next to the puppy. "Yeah, this is Steeler. JD and Jack were kind enough to get him for us." She glanced at Sarah Jane and smiled. "I take it you've met Key, then? They're both lovely dogs, and so sweet! We're really lucky."

Petting Steeler's head, she caught sight of Sarah Jane's left hand and her mouth dropped open. "Oi! Is that..." trailing off, grinning, she looked up at Sarah Jane.

Lily was too well acquainted with the signs of someone who'd pulled themselves together in a hurry to miss the fact that Sarah Jane wasn't exactly as happy as she sounded. However, she didn't want to pry. Not to say she wouldn't, but she didn't want to. If Sarah Jane wanted to talk about it, Lily figured the woman would say something. Perhaps if Lily felt like she could help, she'd push - otherwise, Lily figured it was best to leave it alone. For now.

At Sarah's news, Lily squee'd slightly and threw her arms around the woman. "That's bloody fantastic, mate! Oh, you must be thrilled!" Pulling back she looked back down at the ring. "When did this happen? Oh, the ring is gorgeous."

"You'll love it," Lily assured her with a wide grin. "I was so nervous before my wedding, but I adored being married. Waking up every day with your best mate, having someone to talk to and," she laughed a little, "fight with and make-up with... It's one of the greatest feelings in the world. When you find the right bloke, it's just...well, it's sodding hard work, but it's worth every moment."

Catching the tone of Sarah's voice, Lily expression turned soft. "Is - is something wrong, Sarah Jane? I don't mean to pry, but...if you'd like to talk..." shrugging, Lily smiled gently at her. "I'd be more than happy to listen."
