((Sarah needs to be more social, feel free to come and talk to her. I'm on IRC if you want to chat about it first. xD))
Reaching the end of the section in the book in her lap, Sarah's gaze left the page and traveled out over the lake. Thus far, she had been what she considered successful in learning, despite having had no classes to attend. She had discovered books in the library that apparently were the last texts used when classes used to happen regularly and had been using them as an outline to steadily make her way through the coursework. This self-guided independent study, even in subjects she did not care for much, was more initiative than she had in her first year of college, but then, that hadn't been necessary in a school where they had classes. So far she had determined she was average at wand work and surprisingly good, in her opinion, at Potions and Care of Magical Creatures. It was hard to judge the latter, of course, with only written work and no classes to interact with the creatures, so perhaps she'd have to track down a way to do so. It was the former, however, that she was most concerned with, as there were still things she had questions on and knew she could use a teacher... she just had not gotten the nerve to do so yet.
She sighed, leaning back against the tree as she looked around, unable to concentrate and go back to her book. There were not many people around where she sat, as it was not close to the lake or the castle, but there were enough to observe. That had become one of her favorite non-studying activities, as the temptation to know more about the people from different times and places and races was far too great to resist.

Date: 2006-06-06 01:28 am (UTC)He turned to Data, determined to at least be civil. "I'm a Ravenclaw."

Date: 2006-06-06 01:38 am (UTC)"As am I," Data said in response, trying to sound interested and pleased at the prospect. Not that he could be pleased or displeased, mind you. "And what are the thestrals you mentioned earlier?"

Date: 2006-06-06 03:08 am (UTC)"Thestrals are winged horses, black and skeletal in appearance and carnivorous," she said, flipping through several pages before offering the book to Data so he could see the animated illustration. "They are invisible to anyone who has never witnessed death before, and they used to pull the carriages for Hogwarts, before the students began arriving without the train. Many people think they are bad luck, but that's really just their association with death. They are actually very useful, as they have a fabulous sense of direction and, magically, can fly very fast." She gave him a sheepish look. "And I'll stop now, I tend to get carried away at times after learning all of this."

Date: 2006-06-06 08:12 am (UTC)"Do you think I might be able to see the barn before you go, or with your assistant when he or she is free?" she asked, and then looked to Data, not wanting to leave him out. "Perhaps you could go too if you are interested in the class? I'd love it if you could!"
She turned back to Grant, all smiles. "And, of course, I would appreciate borrowing any books that you would let me."

Date: 2006-06-06 08:23 am (UTC)He paused for a second. "Let me get back to you about the books."

Date: 2006-06-06 08:31 am (UTC)She looked back to Grant and nodded. "And I'm fine with waiting on the books, perhaps you could just contact me when you decide?" She frowned for a second and then blinked. "Do you have a house elf as well, Professor? You could just send the note that way."
no subject
Date: 2006-06-06 08:53 am (UTC)"I do have a house elf, but I don't use him for sending messages. Is there something wrong with owls?"
no subject
Date: 2006-06-06 08:55 am (UTC)At Grant's question, she flushed just slightly in embarrassment. "I... well, owls are the one creature I really am not happy to be around... at all."

"I would be very interested in touring the barn, if it is not too much of an imposition."
((Hmm. Data's seen death in his career: d'you think he'd see thestrals?))

Date: 2006-06-06 10:27 am (UTC)((I would say yes, I can't imagine why he wouldn't. It's entirely up to you, of course! I think it would be interesting to have him see them.))
