Ryuk was writing.

Now while this wasn't that unusual, the fact that he was writing in a red book, rather than his Death Note, was.

See, Ryuk met Drosselmeyer, and they hit it off well. So well, that they decided Ryuk's story had to be written. That's what Ryuk is doing right now.

He was floating above everyone in the Great Hall, writing about Light's exploits from his POV. Right now, he had gotten to the part where Misa reclaimed the Death Note that had been buried.

And to make sure certain tempermental detectives didn't get their hands on it, he used a Flagrante curse on the book, meaning that it would burn anyone that would touch it. Except him. He can't be hurt by human means. Even if he did cast it.
