First it was dark, and warm.

Then there was a loud noise, like a balloon bursting, and a bright light.

Wednesday stood up and took stock of her situation. She was in a room that smelled strongly of popcorn. There were, in fact, kernels everywhere (the oversized nature of them did not cause her any concern). She still had Marie Antoinette tucked under her arm. Also, she was covered in buttery slime. The slime would have delighted Pugsley, but Wednesday thought it might tangle her braids and was therefore somewhat cross.

Wandering out of the popcorn room into the hall made things a little better. Dark, damp stone walls, brooding shadows, cobwebs, the occasional flash of half-seen movement in dark corners; why, it was almost like home!

The hall floors are usually clean, but this particular one is covered in blood drops and marbles.

If you see the mess and do more than turn your nose up at it, you will notice that the apparently abandoned game of marbles is actually still being played, even though there's no one there to be doing so. Occasionally, the balls of glass will roll through the bloodstains, and trail little lines of red along the stone. Or, occasionally, curve in their path.

Whenever this happens, a whispery little boy's voice curses in soft Spanish.

We haven't met and I am sorry to disturb you. I am told you are the groundskeeper. I would like to start a garden. Is there a piece of land I could use?

Thank you for your time,

A
