::Closed RP for A and Kusuriyuri::

A was only mildly concerned about Matt; strep throat was painful but rarely developed severe complications if properly treated. But it was the first time anyone had asked him to tend an illness or injury, and he was both proud and uncertain.

Naturally, it was time for a visit to his sensei. He decided to try Kusuriyuri's office first, and knocked softly on his door.

Kusuriyuri was working on his lesson, almost prepared to post the next sign up notification. The wards told him it was A, so he simply called, "Come in, Deshi."

A was well used to his teacher knowing who was at the door before opening it, so he slipped inobtrusively into the room and closed the door quietly behind himself, leaning back against it.

"Are you, are, are you busy? I would like to talk, but it can wait."

Kusuriyuri set the paper aside that he'd been writing on. "There is nothing here that will not keep. Please, have a seat. Would you like some tea?" he asked.

A sat and nodded. "Yes, that, tea would be very nice." And, because holding back what was on his mind was not in his nature, "Matt is sick."

Kusuriyuri poured the tea and raised an eyebrow at A. From under the table, Boukensha mewed, though his complaint might have had more to do with the talking interrupting his nap. "Is that so?" he asked.

"They, L and Matt, they... they sent for me, to look at him!" He sounded as surprised as he did proud.

Kusuriyuri figured this had more to do with L not appreciating his company. But, he also knew A's skills were up to the challenge, as well. He was pleased that L acknowledged that much, at least. "Good. And, Deshi believed himself equal to the task?"

"He is not very ill," A said, clearly glad of it. "If he was very sick, or if it gets worse instead of better, I would go to you instead of treating him myself. He has a throat infection. I gave him something to boost his immune system, and something for the symptoms, and told him to drink broth with garlic and ginger. I told Ryuuzaki to drink the immune booster as well."

Kusuriyuri nodded. "Deshi did well. It is good that he knows his limitations."

Boukensha crawled out from under the table into A's lap. If his nap was to be disturbed, he decided, it seemed, then he would reap some benefit from it.

With a fond smile, A cuddled the little kitten, tousling the fur behind his ears.

"It felt strange, to be asked. But good too... not that I am glad Matt is sick!"

"It is what deshi learned herbs for, is it not?" Kusuriyuri said, hiding a smile at the kitten behind his cup. "To be able to heal as well as to learn to defend?"

"To heal first," A pointed out. "I, I, I had barely seen flowers when you began to teach me. I learned the uses of all the plants when I was seeing them for the first time. I've, I, I have learned so much from you and I can never thank you enough, not ever." He turned his gaze down to Boukensha, his face flushed with emotion.

Kusuriyuri did smile at that. That A placed healing above defense showed that L's objections to his teachings were spurious and ill founded. "And deshi has worked hard to make himself into a healer," he said softly.

"I want to learn, and you have taught me so much. I want to make you proud, and to be useful. If I can help Matt get better and keep Ryuuzaki from getting sick I will have done a good thing."

"If Deshi had not worked hard, he would not have learned," Kusuriyuri said firmly. "Deshi's next lesson," he said very solemnly, "will to grow belief in his skill."

"I don't want to have to use it often," A admitted. "That would mean people were getting hurt or sick often."

"That may be," Kusuriyuri said. "However, Deshi need not apologize or agonize if he is skilled. It is time he learn to take credit for his knowledge. He is wise enough to know what it is he does not know and what it is he does know."

"I want to be able to help, to be useful. And you showed me how to be."

"And this one has been thanked," Kusuriyuri said gently. "It is time for Deshi to learn to walk. All children learn to walk away from their parents."

"You don't want to teach me any more?" A looked at him in alarm, the hand petting Boukensha freezing in place.

Kusuriyuri looked at A and raised an eyebrow. "Does a child stop learning from their parent when they can walk on their own?" he asked gently.

He looked uncomfortable. "I didn't, I never..."

He'd never really felt the lack of having had parents, but he did now.

Kusuriyuri reached across the table to touch A's hand. "Forgive this one if he disturbed you," he said softly. "He did not intend to."

A half-closed his eyes, enjoying the calming touch.

"It is nothing," he said. "I know you would not upset me. I just, I, I don't have anything to compare to."

"A child who has learned to walk is not ready to be on their own," Kusuriyuri said. "There is still much to learn. It is why, though a two year old may walk, they do not leave their home for several years." He smiled slightly. "Even after one learns to walk, one may occasionally fall."
