Wishbone's put it off long enough. He wants to be an Animagus. (Hopefully, his other form is human. Then he can eat chocolate and have thumbs!)

Professor Snape is from this world, and would know lots about Animagi. So predictably, Wishbone went to the hospital wing, sitting on a bed waiting for Professor Snape to show up.

There have been no patients for some time, but Severus looks in at the neat rows of perfect beds and smiles at his detailed informative diagrams. He is proud of them. There is Wishbone on a bed, waiting for them. He smiles and sits down to give him a pet. "How are you Wishbone? Hook was concerned you had found my class inappropriate."

But it was your class. And I didn't mind drawing the human body. Wishbone scratched his ear. Hey Professor, how does one become an Animagus?

Severus smiles, mollified, then quirks an eyebrow. "Apart from McGonagall, the animagi I have known have been the most unpleasant people it has ever been my misfortune to encounter. One transforms oneself by spells to become another creature. But there are points to keep in mind. One does not choose one's new form, and it is always the same - one only has one form into which to change. And one must register with the ministry. You are hoping to become a human?"

Yes! Then I can try chocolate and use thumbs to read. I would be a good person, I hope.

Severus is gentle. He likes Wishbone. He is independent, yet somehow exempt from the plagues of humanity. "There is no guarantee which animal you might become. There is likelihood that you would become an animal you resemble in soul. I have known a rat, a mosquito and a cat, and all these seemed to represent the human personalities. But I knew a dog and a deer that did not." Especially the deer. He is bitter.

He thinks of what the little dog asks. "I am, after all, a potions master. I could make you a protein substance that tasted like chocolate, yet was digestible for you."

But I won't know for sure unless I try. And there are other things that only humans do, such as petting pets and hugging people. And I could go into buildings! Lots of buildings in the Muggle world won't let me in.

"I just don't want you to be disappointed if you find you have worked very hard and yet become a bird or a tortoise or a pterodactyl. Have you learned the Patronus charm yet? Do you know the nature of your Patronus? They are said to often be the same or similar. I have not done become an animagus - my gifts are different - but I know that it takes a long time to develop the ability. I wish Professor McGonagall were here to teach you. I can show you the books and help you a little with the spells, but she was an expert."

He pauses. "There is a man here at Hogwarts now, who transforms into a dog. But though we are no longer bitter enemies, for Dumbledore's sake, we are far from friends." It is an enormous concession to even mention Sirius' existence, and he thus does Wishbone a tremendous compliment, even knowing he will not realise it.

That might be neat though. I would be able to fly! That's Wishbone, always finding a good point. No, I haven't learned the Patronus charm yet.

Wishbone had an idea who Snape was talking about: Sirius Black. But he also knew that they weren't friends, so he approached a safer subject. Professor Dumbledore's here?

"Dumbledore is certainly here. It would not be Hogwarts without him." It would be part of a terrible period, the prospect of which Severus had fled.

"I can help you with the Patronus charm. It is important for any wizard and the same types of skills and concepts might apply as those one would use to become an animagus. And perhaps I could speak to Dumbledore on your behalf. He may know more specific information than I can find for you."

Actually, I want to meet Professor Dumbledore. He sounds like a nice man. But we can work on the Patronus charm too!

Severus is not sure what to say to this. Human beings are so complex he can hardly address Good and Evil. Wishbone ought to meet him, though. In many ways Dumbledore and Hogwarts are the same thing to Severus. "I could send him an OWL if you wish - to introduce you and let him know that you wish to learn to be an animagus. He will certainly know how to register so that you may begin learning, and which resources are available. Then I may be able to help you, or he may be able to suggest someone with more experience than I have. And I have no doubt at all that you will like him."

"I also have no doubt that he would like you," Severus tells the little dog. "He can see the good in everyone."

"Shall we owl him now? Have you met my owl? His name is Damon." He smiles and pets excited Wishbone.
