Not long after the letter was delivered, there was a frantic knocking at Light Yagami's door.

If Mikami had looked frightened when confessing the soup incident, that was nothing compared to how he looked now. He also had a cut lip. He'd had to defend the woman with the handbag, after all.

"While Kira could not openly act at that time, there would have been a scrap piece of the Death Note in my watch so that I could deal with one person if I had to." Perhaps future self should have mentioned this thing. No comment on the time for replication, because all that matters is that it did get done in time.

"What do you expect me to do, in this world where Kira has no recorded existence beyond the memories of those that already know of the new world's failure? Where I have neither the Death Note nor my memories?" When your god could not act under suspision, how do you believe he can when the truth is known.

"I don't - I don't know." His voice is quiet now, broken. "I don't - but you... you came from before. When you return you'll change it, you'll make it right. You'll find someone who won't fail." The word fail is almost a sob. "The world needs you, needs your justice, and you - you d-deserve a more worthy servant."

God isn't bound by temporal paradoxes, surely.

"Mikami, you were chosen by Kira as the best candidate to carry out judgment in my place. Had there been anyone more worthy, I would have picked them instead," he places a hand on Mikami's shoulder.

Light does not want the crying man to redirect his overemotional state into anger towards the person who already agreed to not change the future, so making it about Mikami more than himself should be distracting enough from that.

He shudders when God touches him, breath catching in his throat. Some part of him knows that he should pull himself together, that he's hysterical, behaving like an infant, but the greater part of him is still sick with horror. The world would sink into anarchy because of him and the only thing stopping it is this castle and an insane hat. (Another accident, he thinks, and forces the thought away.)

"...you are too merciful," he breathes. "I don't - can't deserve your forgiveness."

Of course Kira would never forgive his servant, and Light isn't really forgiving either as he is just making sure that Mikami will be alright. After all, Mikami is an active Kira supporter where Light was pulled from going after a Kira, even knowing that he is Kira, Light cannot feel as passionately about it as Mikami does.

"What will you do now, Mikami?" he withdraws his hand.

"What will I do?" he repeats, faintly. "What - what can I do? What do you want of me? I only want to serve you." He shakes his head. "I know I don't deserve it, but I - I waited for you for so long..."

Light didn't even want Misa to do anything despite her insistance in helping capture the Yotsuba Kira. Now that Light has heard the events from Mikami's point of view and Mikami has found out that Kira lost, there isn't any more that Light wants from him.

"You'll have to figure out what you can do on your own. I have nothing I need for you to do now."

"I -" He can barely get the words out. "I understand."

He does understand. It's not even a matter of punishment or forgiveness. There's nothing to be done in this place, but that doesn't make the words hurt any less.

Since there is nothing else to say, Light unlocks the door so that Mikami can leave.

He doesn't want to go. He wants to stay in God's presence, wants to be punished or forgiven, wants God to touch him again for just a second. But there is nothing more to say, here. He has to leave.

"My God," he whispers, climbing shakily to his feet. "I promise, I swear, that I will atone for this. I will do - anything I can, anything you wish. I will give my life for you if you order it, I promise..."
