Wishbone found it! He found a copy of Aesop's Fables!

And after he dragged it all the way back to his room, he left the curtain open and went to find the other animals.

Scratching at Matt's door got no response (maybe he and Koopa were out, so he moved on to A's door, scratching at it.

A looked at the picture, even if the cats did not. But their ears were perked up, and they remained alert. They knew they were being addressed.

And Wishbone read to them about the Hare, so proud of his speed, and the Tortoise that took on his challenge, and how the Hare was so cocky that he took a nap, and woke up to find that the Tortoise had won the race.

Well? What did you think? He asked everyone, watching Schrodinger. There are lots of other stories too!

Schrodinger meowed; she could tell when she was being paid attention to.

"That is foolish," A says, "to nap during a race. You will never be best if you stop trying."

That's right! He began wagging his tail again. And if you keep at it, you can do whatever you want!

"You are good at being encouraging," A told him with a smile.

I sure hope so. I encouraged Joe and Sam and David a lot! They didn't seem to hear me, but I think they knew.

Both cats meowed, as if in agreement.

Well. Good. Wishbone ducked his head and covered his nose with his paw.

Schrodinger pried at his paw with one dainty little cat foot, as if possessed of a sudden need to see Wishbone's nose.

And if Wishbone was human, he would try to hide it further.

Then again, if he was human, he wouldn't hide his nose, it'd just look silly.

So he lifted up his head a bit, looking at Schrodinger.

Schrodinger gave a self-satisfied-sounding chirrup and A laughed.

"She likes you."

Well, I like Schrodinger too. Ah, I like Einstein too, but I like Schrodinger a lot more.

"She is more outgoing and brave," A told him. "But she might nip your ankles sometimes."

Outgoing and brave? A girl after Wishbone's heart.

She'd probably like to go on adventures sometime!

"She is not allowed on dangerous adventures," A told him sternly. "It is my job to keep her safe."

They wouldn't be dangerous adventures. We'd just find treasure and play outside and maybe solve some mysteries! Oh, and help everyone in the alphabet gang out!

"You would have to watch her very carefully," A said, clearly uncertain. Schrodinger and Einstein were his babies.

Of course! Wishbone sat up straight. What kind of knight would I be if I didn't protect a maiden?

A smiled a little at that. "Maybe I will let her go on an adventure with you sometime, then. I don't think Einstein will feel left out. He is more cautious and he likes to sleep."

Wishbone went to hide his nose again, but then thought better of it and looked for another story to read.

Yes, I'd like that.

Both cats watched him expectantly. Apparently they enjoyed being read to. A liked it too.

And Wishbone liked reading to them all.

He began to read The Ant and the Chrysalis to them.
