Having agreed to talk to Miss Tam further about Occlumency, Lupin tidies up some of the papers in his office and hopes that there aren't any psychic vibrations or subliminal messages which will turn her into a raving maniac. She's a very nice girl, he thinks, but it's a bit intimidating to know that she could not only "kill him with her mind" but kick his teeth in with no more effort than swatting a fly. He alters the warding spells on his office to allow her in, sits down at his desk and assumes a look of kindly authority, and waits for her to arrive.

River comes into Lupin's office, a little hesitantly. "Professor? You said we could talk in private about---" she looks round and closes the door before going on--- "Occlumency." She smiles slightly and gives him a look of the knowing sort. "And I'm not that easily triggered. Not since---" a twitch--- "Miranda."

River gives him a shy-little-girl smile that contrasts wildly with her next words: "People have tried that before, sir. With me, I mean. It usually doesn't work out very well--- for them, that is. But I... appreciate your concern. It's very thoughtful." She perches on the arm of a chair and folds her hands around one knee. "Is there someone else I could ask? Besides Professor Snape, I mean?"

"I haven't actually killed anyone with my mind," River says earnestly, as if they were discussing an independent study of particular interest to her. "Well, except in the sense that I had to think about what I was doing, except that it's like dancing: it works best if you don't think too much--- and usually I just use my hands and feet. Or any weapons that are available. The captain doesn't like me touching guns, though--- but I think he got over that once I stopped pointing them at him." She bites at a fingernail: this talk of "certain elements" in the school reminds her of the last time she got mixed up in politics. "Should... someone... do something about Professor Snape and his... associates?"

"Professor Dumbledore. That's a good suggestion. I'll owl him." She starts to get up, then sits down again at Lupin's offer of tea. "Yes, I'd like some tea, thank you. What kinds do you have?"

"I didn't say I couldn't--- just that I haven't tried," River says earnestly. "I might be able to... but I don't think I'd be allowed to test it here. Unless we got anoter applicant like Mmy." She shudders in disgust.

She pauses, and then adds, "There are other ways to... handle... people than killing them. I think Rita Skeeter could help. She offered to help me with another... political... problem." Another pause, then: "Sometimes all you have to do is let people know there's a problem and it solves itself. Maybe not totally, but... enough."

She looks at the tea. "English Breakfast, I think." She looks up at Lupin. "Do you have any 'Constant Comment'? My father used to get that for me, back home on Osiris--- he said it was appropriate." Her expression invites him to share the joke.

"Well, it's more like we're helping each other. It's kind of a long story. (http://community.livejournal.com/hogwarts_hocus/121153.html?thread=6155329#t6155329)" River smiles a little, embarrassed. "'Constant Comment'--- it was sort of a pun. My dad's way of saying that I talked too much, really. Simon says I could be a real brat sometimes."

River senses Lupin's pity; it inspires conflicting emotions--- she feels warm toward him, but at the same time wants to remind him that she can take care of herself. She's not sure how much of it shows on her face. It takes her a minute to recognize how much of the sympathy comes from his own experience, and then she smiles.

"Thank you," she says, meaning it, and not just for what he's said aloud; she trusts Lupin will understand. "And... I think I've managed to get more out of it than they ever meant to give me--- thanks to my brother and the captain and the rest of Serenity's crew, mostly." She smiles slightly. "The Alliance got what they wanted with me--- except that it got them, too."
