::Open RP - A's Garden::

It was a lovely day, really.

Even if the weather had been less than ideal, A would have gone to the garden. The plants needed to be tended, after all, and right now he's kneeling by the catnip bed, pulling out the few weeds that have dared to encroach on his territories.

Now that he has a computer with an internet connection, A is Discovering music, and he's singing, very badly, as he weeds.

He can't carry a tune, but there's an odd hiccuping tone to his voice that's a clear attempt to mimic Buddy Holly.

"Really?" Ryuk leaned down so he was eye level with A. "Humans can eat flowers?"

"S-some flowers," A forced out, leaning back. "Almost all the ones I planted are ones that can be eaten. I made jelly from the lavender the other day, while we candied violets and rose petals."

It's easy for A to relax when he can start talking about his plants.

"The morning glories aren't edible, but L wanted them."

"Interesting!" Lots of things were to Ryuk. "So you like to do what L says, huh?"

"I want to make him happy," A says simply. "I want him to be pleased with me. And he likes morning glories. So there are morning glories in my garden."

"Whatever works for you." Ryuk stood to full height. "What else do you grow?" He fingered the catnip plant.

"That's catnip," A points out to him. "It makes cats act silly. For people, it can soothe the stomach and settle the nerves. Next to it is lavender. It smells good, and it can be used in cooking, and if you stuff a pillow with it it will help you sleep. It can also be used to make mouthwash."

He pauses there, not sure whether to continue.

"Hmmm. I wonder...." he plucked a piece of catnip off and put it in his mouth. His eyes widened and he began to flail a bit.

A tried to scramble away without taking the time to stand first, and wound up on his back in the dirt.

"That's for Einstein and Schrodinger," he whispers.

"AGH!" Ryuk bent over, rubbing at his face. "So that's what happens when a shinigami eats catnip. Not doing that again."

"Good," A said weakly. "It's for my cats. And if I need to give someone a tea to stop them being sick to their stomach."

"So, what," he said slightly muffled, "you're a doctor too?"

"I'm learning medicines," A told him. "Learning what plants are good to treat sickness and injuries. Not... not a doctor."

A hated and feared doctors.

"Wait. I thought that's what doctors did? They help sick and injured people get better, right? Course, if their name's in a Death Note, no amount of help can save them."

Ryuk, you fucking blabbermouth.

"Doctors do tests. Tests and experiments. With needles and drugs."

Nothing at all like herbal remedies.

"What... what's a Death Note?"

"Something I have. You write a person's name in it, and they die. Sounds morbid, but it's how I live. Their lifespan becomes mine."

"Killing people is wrong," A says, because that's what L tells him.

"To you humans, yeah, it's wrong. To us shinigami, it's a way of life. They die so we live."

"That's... it's like..." Folklore never featured heavily in A's education, and he had to think about it. "It's like a vampire."

"Vampire? No, we don't suck humans' blood. That's pointless."

"But you live off of people. You make them die to make you strong."

"Strong's not the word I'd use. Yeah, we kill humans, but what do most of the shinigami do with their lives? Gamble. It's the reason I dropped a Death Note onto Earth in the first place."

"You..." A looked up at Ryuk with a distressed frown.

"You write someone's name in it, and it kills them. And... it doesn't have to be you that does it..."

"Nope."

Oh, Ryuk, what a bad thing to say.

"You..." A balled one hand into a fist and pressed it to his mouth. It could kill so many people... how?

L wouldn't like it. No, no, he wouldn't.
