::Open RP - A's Garden::

It was a lovely day, really.

Even if the weather had been less than ideal, A would have gone to the garden. The plants needed to be tended, after all, and right now he's kneeling by the catnip bed, pulling out the few weeds that have dared to encroach on his territories.

Now that he has a computer with an internet connection, A is Discovering music, and he's singing, very badly, as he weeds.

He can't carry a tune, but there's an odd hiccuping tone to his voice that's a clear attempt to mimic Buddy Holly.

"Not... he doesn't even... it's fake, it's all fake, mimicry won't, won't make him more, no, no, Backup isn't good enough, he's not, not..."

A was still crouching, almost hunched in on himself, but there was a faint defiant gleam in his eyes. How, how could she dare compare B to L!

"Hmmm. I wonder...." he plucked a piece of catnip off and put it in his mouth. His eyes widened and he began to flail a bit.

A tried to scramble away without taking the time to stand first, and wound up on his back in the dirt.

"That's for Einstein and Schrodinger," he whispers.

"AGH!" Ryuk bent over, rubbing at his face. "So that's what happens when a shinigami eats catnip. Not doing that again."

"Good," A said weakly. "It's for my cats. And if I need to give someone a tea to stop them being sick to their stomach."

"So, what," he said slightly muffled, "you're a doctor too?"

"I'm learning medicines," A told him. "Learning what plants are good to treat sickness and injuries. Not... not a doctor."

A hated and feared doctors.

Jezz was looking at Naomi as if she was supposed to know something about this. She gave him a Look back.

B, the candidate to succeed L - was A another candidate? (Though what kind of name was Backup?)

"Of course not," she repeated. "Otherwise he wouldn't be a murderer, would he?"

"Wait. I thought that's what doctors did? They help sick and injured people get better, right? Course, if their name's in a Death Note, no amount of help can save them."

Ryuk, you fucking blabbermouth.

"B," A whispers. Murder? Well, why not? B would do anything to keep himself amused. "He's filthy, he... he doesn't leave anything alone."

"Doctors do tests. Tests and experiments. With needles and drugs."

Nothing at all like herbal remedies.

"What... what's a Death Note?"

"Something I have. You write a person's name in it, and they die. Sounds morbid, but it's how I live. Their lifespan becomes mine."

"Killing people is wrong," A says, because that's what L tells him.

"He has a lot of nerve." Showing up at the scene of his crime as an "unprivate detective" + walking her through the clues he'd planted himself (she recalled his vehement insistence on Akazukin Chacha's relevance) + attempting self-immolation = oodles and oodles of nerve if nothing else.

"Not when he's outnumbered," A said, and giggled. The memory of torturing B always made him smile. "No, no, he pleads then, yes."

"To you humans, yeah, it's wrong. To us shinigami, it's a way of life. They die so we live."

"That's... it's like..." Folklore never featured heavily in A's education, and he had to think about it. "It's like a vampire."

"Vampire? No, we don't suck humans' blood. That's pointless."

"But you live off of people. You make them die to make you strong."

"Strong's not the word I'd use. Yeah, we kill humans, but what do most of the shinigami do with their lives? Gamble. It's the reason I dropped a Death Note onto Earth in the first place."

"You..." A looked up at Ryuk with a distressed frown.

"You write someone's name in it, and it kills them. And... it doesn't have to be you that does it..."

Naomi blanched somewhat, unnerved despite herself. B had been well outnumbered in the courtroom, she remembered, but he hadn't pleaded. He'd sat there a sullen bandage-swathed wraith, giving everyone the creeps. What, she wondered, would make him plead?

"So you struck back," said Jezz, looking vicariously pleased, some of the dots connected in his mind. "Good for you."

A still looks distressed, but he smiles at Jezz with a touch of savagery. "Yes." As if he'd done it unaided, but he didn't see the point for going into detail. "And if I need to I will again."

"You..." A balled one hand into a fist and pressed it to his mouth. It could kill so many people... how?

L wouldn't like it. No, no, he wouldn't.
